will i have any fun on a short track?

Your buddies may not leave you, but they probably wouldn't be taking you next time either.
Even a bad rider on a long track will outclimb you almost everytime.
I've never rode Yellowstone, but are there any places where the long tracks go that is impossible for a shorty to access? If so , then you'll be holding your buds back big time.
I agree with the guy who said to try yours out and then rent if you want. Or buy an extension kit.

thank you all for advice-it is greatly appreciated. if i could ask another question. some were saying 'stretch it out'. if i went from 121x1.75 to a 136x1.75. will it make much difference in deep snow? doing the math the track will only be 12% longer. so is it worth the the cost?

1815 square inches vs 2040. it'll help. these guys are drama queens, 10 years ago a 136 was the big track. U can go anywhere on a 121 if the snow is right. 136 is still a good sled. I know lots of guys who ride shortys year round, watch some vids guys, if you're a good rider a shorty will go far.
 
I think bludoo and sledneck9 have it. Five days @ $180 is $900. A dealer might be able to put a track under you MX-Z for that, but I would give your buddies the option of either digging you out all the time in Jan. or spending a night in the warm and cozy shop in Dec. drinking beer and putting that track on yourselves. If you were really ambitious you might even go to something really gnarly and then see how quick you can switch it back to original when you get back from your trip.

The longer track will make for a smoother ride when trail burining too. :beer;
 
I can't possibly see you you can have a bad day snowmobiling...I have burned down my sled three times now...all great days...That being said, if everyone in your party has flatlander sleds, just ride terain that is challenging for those sleds. If you want to get out rent for a day or two. No use being fancy going into the park...they made that so lame anyway.

I would like to see someone go anywhere on a 121". It's not gonna happen. Yes 10 years ago a 136" was "the mountain machine" but if you are riding with guys who have modern sleds with tracks 144" or longer, good luck.

As for guys who ride shorties all year who are good riders, you still only have so much track and so much motor, rider skill can't fix that when you are climbing the big hills to access bowls, trails etc. :)

I've seen tundra's go anywhere on hero snow. My point is you don't need a 174 16 wide under an apex turbo running 400lbs boost to have fun. A 700 with a 136 is lots of sled for most any mountain riding, an inexperienced rider could even get in trouble on one if he tried. If the snow is rock hard a 121 will climb anything. Maybe not when its deep but if I had a 121 and it was deep I'd probably have a ton of fun just trying to go places. I have lots of friends in the yukon and most of them ride 121 MXZ revs. No body in their groups climb but they all seem to have fun. Have you ever watched sledporn?
 
Like previously said, depends what your buds are riding. If they are mostly 136, you will be fine riding a 121.

ditto on the longtrack conversion vs renting. You can probably convert for $500 or less.
 
Like what has been posted several times if your matched equiped with your buddies you will probably be fine. If their packing 144's or better you will be the drag. You probably won't see much set up snow in January and could be in endless powder. I would think about an upgrade of some sorts real hard.
All we ride is the mountains, wouldn't even consider taking anyone on a 121 in January I don't care how good they talk up. Been there done that to many times. It makes for a miserable day for every one.

just my 2 cents as a flatlander trying to keep up out west - stretched my SRX 700 to M10 136" with 1.5" camo. Then bought apex mountain but totalled it (that's another story). The next year stretched the SRX again to 151" with 2" camo - added wider skis, Holtzman carb kit, heads, VForce, heel clickers, etc., etc, etc. The sled does OK straight uphill and has alot of grunt but went to Cooke last March - after 1 day found out there's a reason for "mountain sleds" vs. extended trail sleds. I rented a skidoo xp 154 for the rest of the week and the fun factor went thru the roof - that was all it took - my new blue & white X is waiting for me in Wyoming!!!!

Same thing happened to me. I rode a damn XP 154" one weekend and got spoiled. Then I bought a turbo Nytro.:D

Its my first 'Doo, a little foreign to me to be honest (no pun intended)
being so used to Yamaha's and how they are put together... Pretty weird taking a new sled and spending half a day making the panels fit right. But it sure is light!
