will i have any fun on a short track?

i'm going to west yellowstone in janauary with 7 other flat landers that are decent riders. that time of year snow is usually very fluffy. we have been going out west twice a year for about 7 years now and ride long tracks. i am considering bringing out my 2007 mxz rs 800 with a 121" x 1.75" lug track. is this going to be a nightmare or do you think it will do ok? i do not own a long track anymore so my other option is renting for $180 a day for 5 days, so i'd like to make this work. any advice?

You will have the worst time on a short track! i mean if it was a 136 or 144 with a 2" paddle you might be able to do a lil something but a 121 x 1.75 will get you the worst trip of your life in west Yellowstone! i would definetly rent if i was you!:beer;:D

I used to ride a 440 121 in the mountains all the time.not quite as fun but still fun, cant really go boondocking by your self or you could end up in a pickle but hittin the meadows and junk off the roads is still fun. i would difinately ride my own sled instead of paying to rent

I still run a short track in the mountains here and there it's a 121, 700 mxz with a 2 inch lug with some engine work, piped and clutched it's fun for a while but you just won't be able to every where the longer racks can go, So spend the Extra money and have a blast.

I certainly won't bring along anyone anymore that rides a 121"er, way too much hassle turning back and getting them unstuck! Rider ability is one thing, but wasting time getting someone unstuck and giving them fuel later on isn't worth a 121" no matter how deep the lug.

it all depends on who you go riding with if you are riding with guys who only have short tracks then it will still be a blast cause you will never get left behind but if you go and try and ride that with people who have long tracks your just going to get left behind and not have alot of fun.

If you're going to ride off trail, rent sleds. We went the past 4 years with our Firecat's with 1.7's on them. It sucked butt to say the least, we trenched really bad and couldn't go nearly - (not even close to) as many places as longer track sleds. Not to mention, you are so tired at night from working your a$$ off on the machine just to get up little hills, it really wasn't worth it.

Since riding in the midwest sucks, I dumped the F7 and got an Apex Mtn.

Should be a better year....

I went for two years on a short track and rode with short track guys. It was a blast.

Last year 3 of us bought mountain sleds and I would never go back to the shorty out west.

lol lil over dramatic some of you are.

if your riding w/ others in the 136-121 " track range, no biggy, you'll be fine.

if your riding w/ others with 162-151 tracks...well, then you'll have issues.

i did plenty of riding on 121x2 and 500cc, with others on 121s and 136s.

obviously you won't go places that a ~160 will go, but will still be a blast. :)
know and learn your limits..and you'll be gtg.

and yes, it may require some track poaching (or track packing) to get places.

Yeah that all depends on your ridding style. My bud last year rode his '03 800 Pro-x with us up in the snowies every ride(we rode for 9 months straight). He was a good rider, knew his sled, and limits of both and i was amazed at were he could take that sled. Alot of that comes down to tuning and such, jets, weights, gearing, etc for altitude and snow conditions, but that Rev with 1.75 should do you just fine plus you can show your buds up with sweet drops and massive air!!!!!

if I had to choose between a short track or not riding at all I would take the short track. ride what ya got, you'll have fun!!!!

on the other hand if I had to choose between a short chick and not riding at all ........, I'd hit it!:face-icon-small-win

rode with a short track last year. the snow was set up the first day then it snowed overnight. the next day he tried going where the long tracks where going, it ruined the trip for everyone. spent the next 2 days getting him unstuck.

I seem to remeber having fun riding a 1979 yamaha enticer 250. Sure I like my 800 153". But if short is your option, go have a blast. Your buddies are not going to leave you. We hardly ever find skeletons next to sleds.

The news is not sounding good for riding Yellowstone this year. They may not even allow snowcoaches. Hard to tell until the snow actually starts getting groomed.

Good luck and have fun(that is what it is all about)

If you can RIDE then you'll be fine. I've riden 121's-151's, the only differance is you wont be breaking trail with a 121 but you'll have alot more fun in the open meadows and boondocken. You can can tun them on a dime. I ride with 8-10 different guys and for the past 4 years 2 of them have only ride 121with 2". Take it out with you and if it doesn't work for you, then rent. But like I said if you can RIDE you'll be fine!!

actually it just depends on the snow. we got the last week in jan for the past 15- 18 yrs and i would that 50% of the time a short track would of been fine, but the last 2-3 yrs forget the short track

Rode a short track out west and the one thing that was good about it was the fact that you will respect hills a lot more a become a better rider. You start to use creativity when trying to reach places from a short track....I feel that if you want to keep up...brush up on your technicals
