Why would Polaris run champions? Change your plugs.

I'm sure this topic has come up before but I figured I throw it out there just in case. I was checking my plugs today in my 08 D7 just to make sure my mixture looked good and realized that the sled has been running Champion plugs. This is my first year owning this sled (first couple months actually) so I called Polaris to find out what plugs came stock in the sled and they told me Champions... ?? REALLY?

I'm an auto tech by trade and I don't believe in running champion plugs in anything. Not even my weed eater. I've just seen too many terrible running vehicles (Chrysler particularly) with new Champions in them that just don't burn as efficiently as they should.

I really believe in NGKs is so I ordered up 4 (2 spares) BPR9ES plugs for my sled. I don't know that I'll notice any difference but I just had to say good bye to the champs. If you order the NGKs, they absolutely HAVE to be the BPR9 not the BR9 like the older sleds.

Anyone else's thoughts on this subject?

NGK does not carry a perfect crossover plug for the RN57YCC as far as I know. They have some that work, but my Polaris sleds have always run best with Champion plugs...all other brands I use NGK...go figure...

There was a thread on here a few years ago about this (I believe on the old forum), and somebody had dyno sheets showing that the Champions were worth around 2 hp over the NGK's on a D7. Apparently, the heat range of the Champion plug is between a 9 and a 10 NGK, so there is no direct crossover to an NGK plug.

THE GREAT PLUG DEBATE

I've run Champs, NGK's, regular and those GOLD PLATED PALLADIUM IRRIDUM's in my sled now.

I.M.H.O., it doesn't friggin matter, period!

To believe that one brand out-performs another by a notice-able amount is ridiculous.

BTW, back in my old 1/4 mile drag race days, we used to run Nitrous on our Street cars and we would reduce the fuel pressure to lean out the Nitrous, sometimes TOO LEAN and it would "torch the electrodes off the CHAMPION plugs.

With the electrode totally gone, the engine would still not misfire under normal riving, with NO friggin electrode left

Run what your sled runs best with. If you have problems running the champions, run the NGK BPR9ES as you said. If you have problems running the NGKs, run the Champion RN57YCC plugs.

My buddy once went through 3 sets of champion plugs in an hour, I gave him a set of used NGKs and I don't think he has changed them in 2 years. I have heard stories from others that the NGKs just don't work in their sleds so just run what your machines likes.... :beer;

I have not fouled a set of NGKs yet personally:face-icon-small-hap

Polaris has been using Champions since 1997 when the twins were released. They are a great plug.

And having the right plug in the twins is important... the wrong plug can have timing implications not to mention plug temp issues.

If you are having issues with Champions in a Polaris twin then I'd be looking for the cause of the issue other than the plugs... there are literally 10s of thousands of Champion plugs being run in Polaris sleds these days.

Well slap me and call me silly! hmm.... As far as the car world goes I have just seen many champions foul out with very little miles on them. I'm not saying that I've had any trouble with my sled but I have just always disliked Champions for some reason. I suppose I probably see a lot of people putting them in their cars while doing their own tune ups. I guess it is possible that they break them putting them in or they are using the wrong plug for their application in the first place.

If it is true that Champions work best in the Polaris twins then hell... I'll bite my tongue and run Champions. I was told by the service department at Polaris that they recommend NGK BPR9ES plugs to everyone with the D7s... I also take a lot of the things my dealer says with a grain of salt though and get most of my info from forums... Everything you read on the internet is always true!

Thanks for the input homies

i got a 2010 iq 800 dragon and the stock champions and the ngks would not work in my sled she was backfire and temperature light blink and no power. dealer couldnt fix it so i ran ngk iridiums bpr9eix and she runs great every since. and the dealer told me it wouldnt work and wouldnt beleive me that i am running them. so this goes to show that you have to run whatever makes your sled happy :)

I run the BPR9EIX in my 09 700 and have no problems what-so-ever. This does not mean the corect Champions will not work. I just prefer NGKs for all of my powersport engines. I'll use Champions in the lawnmower, chainsaw, and weedeaters.

Champions are cheaper for Polaris to buy, especially in the quantities they purchase. Remember, OEMs will compromise and use the cheapest available vs. the best available.

It is who ever they have a contract with on a boxcar load per year.

Polaris now runs the BPR9ES in all the sleds... New supplier...

I've had great luck with RN57YCC plugs... same great luck with NGK and ND plugs.

Often fouling is from poor plug selection or an innacurate cross-ref specification.

I was told by the dealer yesterday not to run the BR9s because they cause detonation and misfiring?? I'm not sure why and I didn't really get into but the performance just told me to run the BPR9s and nothing else...

I'm going to try them this week and keep some champions on board just in case. As stated above, I've just always believed in running NGKs but that not to say that the Champions don't work great also.

plugs

My 2010 D8 came with the champions installed, and the dealer gave me the NGK's for replacement plugs. I to had read alot about the plug debate and how good teh NGK's were. So I did my own test. I put in the NGK's that the dealer gave me (thinking they would be better) and I lost 100-150 rpms, just from the plugs alone. That same ride, I pulled the NGK's, put teh champions back in, and got my 100-150 rpms back. So for me it was a win win situation. The champions work better and there cheaper, and have never fouled out. The NGK's went straight into the garbage.

What plugs are good to run in a 07 D7 i'm currently running BR9ES, should I pick up some BPR9es?

Yes, you should be running the P (projected insulator) plug, or the orig champ, which also has a proj insl. This helps control the heat range by warming the plug quicker, when cold, and helps to run cooler when hot.

I gotta agree with original poster. I'm also in automotive trade, plus weekend drag racer, and have seen way too many fouled Champions. Some didn't even make it off shop floor beforee fouling if choke adjustment was needed after plug change. The ycan't stand running rich and will foul in a heartbeat. NGK's are a lot more tolerant. Wouldn't use Champions to light my barbeque. Champion spark plugs are like Quaker State oil: great advertising and hype, but what's in the package sucks.

I had a 91 RXL, and if anyone remembers them, they had huge issues with fouling plugs if not running hard all the time. One fix was going to extended tip Champion which made problem worse, then BPR9ES NGK's which helped but killed top-end. For ten years I always rode with a spare set of BR9ES's just in case of to much putting fouling plug. Then I installed BR9EIX Iridium's and never fouled a plug after that.

I have since run Iridium's in everything I own myself including my 06 Dragon 600, and all my customers that will pay the premium price without issue. Have never fouled an NGK Iridium in anything!!! Even a 750hp Mopar that jammed a needle and seat on an 1150 Dominator. And some sleds do seem crisper with them, and some show no difference. Same as anything in the world of speed.

Just because a ngk plug works good in one application does not mean it will work well in another application. An ngk plug and a champion (or any other plug) rarely are a direct cross with each other. I have seen on several occasions where an ngk plug would not even fire a cylinder, switch to a champion and it runs fine, and on another style motor the ngks are hands down better. Just don't base your plug preference on what a motor with very little in common performed best on.

The BPR9EIX plugs have run flawlessly in my Dragon.

Some Polaris dealers don't even carry the Champions, just NGK's.
