Why are you guys moving some threads?

First off we start with this rule that predates me by quite some time...

=====
Advertising
Please do not use the SnoWest Forums to advertise other commercial enterprises without the explicit written permission of SnoWest. The posting of advertisements or solicitations for third party sites or products is prohibited without a commercial advertising agreement with Harris Publishing Inc.

=====

Then we try to make this work in reality.

Neither myself nor anyone else on the staff have any issues with legitimate New Product Announcements.

BUT..

The other paid advertisers DO have a serious bone to pick about anyone using the forums to advertise their products who is not paying for that privilege.

More often than not, they will see a post/thread that they consider an ad and call into their sales rep at the magazine to complain. The rep then calls me to ask if I have seen it and whether or not it appears to "Smell / Feel / Look" like a commercial solicitation for business.

If is passes the smell test, it stays and no one knows we ever evaluated it.

If it fails, it gets moved.

Once in a while, we move something in error, and it gets put back once things are sorted out.

One of the other issues that is raised by paid sponsors are the use of "Alter" accounts by a manufacturer/reseller to endorse a product and make it "Look / Smell / Feel" like a legitimate thread from a regular member when it fact it is a cleverly camouflaged attempt to bypass the advertising rule. This is one of the harder issues to resolve, and can often lead to the wrong thread getting moved which causes lots of consternation on the forums.

I STRONGLY ENCOURAGE new product announcements from manufacturers and from end users. But there is a fine line that has to be walked when one of them boarders on being a commercial solicitation.

I would like to make one last point and then fade off into the sunset on this topic.

I feel that income for Harris comes in many forms. The folks who send hard cash to subscribe are obviously one form. The advertisers are another form.

The folks who draw others(for what ever reason) to this forum on a regular basis obviously are very valuable to Harris. Otherwise you may not have a forum worthy of subscribers or advertisers. I think many of the folks mentioned in the above post are a huge draw to this forum and therefore have brought a value. I certainly don't know how to measure that value, but it's there and needs to be appreciated! "special privileges" may be just one of many things Harris can do for it's "Stars"

I have also paid to advertise with snowest, so what you are saying is someone eles paid more to advertise so if they complain then great info and products get pulled or moved if that is the case then you need to post everyones advertising budget so we can keep score.
I have seen that some companys rely on marketing while other rely on countless hours of testing and R&d to make there company grow personally I would rather have my sled work better and have a smaller # of happy customers. than a whole pile of people calling none stop because I marketed something that wasnt ready to go.

So wait, your not even a paid avertiser? If this was my forum I wouldn't let you advertise here either. Almost every forum that I have ever been on is that way. I have to agree with Christopher on this one. Hell, now knowing your not a paid advertiser, I can't beleive Christopher let this go on for as long as he did, Most places would have killed that business immediately.
Your a business - where else are you able to advertise for free that makes you think you should be able to get a free ride here as well?
Thats crazy, spent the money to advertise here, this is the biggest mountain sled forum that I know of, If you aren't advertising here where are you spending money to advertise?

Agreed. Take a look at other forums for example.. Pirate4x4. If you try and peddle without being an advertiser.. poof you are gone. They don't even listen to complainers either.

There is a gray area in this discussion, between what is advertising and what is providing information.

You kidding me? I think we need an alter hall of shame or something. You get busted using an alter, then you go on a list fall all to see. Not just businesses, but regular users too.

Mods

Look guys it is black and white if you want to trash some one then trash me for slacking. :face-icon-small-hap

SW...your crazy is showing.

Clearly if you want something to get prime space here Christopher must own or be interested in the product..paid advertiser or not.

That is a perfect example of what everyone should like to see more of.

I didn't know the guy, he doesn't advertise, he has NO business relationship with SnoWest whatsoever. He is just another member that is manufacturing a product in his garage.

As an end user I bought one of his products on the strong recommendations of several other snowest members.

I was really impressed with it so I wrote an honest review of it.

Why don't you do the same with a few of the products you have purchased??

That HARD part is determining who the alters really are.
Some are sloppy and it's easy to identify them, others are a bit more clever and it takes us more time to track them down. And even then, we are seldom ever able to say just WHO was using the account. Only that there is a clear association with other pre-existing accounts.

When we find one, we just shut it down.

OH....so the real secret to marketing on snowest, IS to have all your buddies post awesome reviews on here about a product your selling.

There is a great idea for you OVS. Instead of paying for advertising, just have as many people (with or without sleds) sign up on snowest and post great reviews for OVS's Turbo's. Nobody needs to know, just good ole happy OVS customers. Just make sure they pass the "Smell Test"

Then your playing by Chris's rules...after all, he has no problem with posting reviews.

BTW, I heard an interesting story about Chris getting a Nitro stuck just off the trail on black bear loop in IP. They had to hike out and call to have search and rescue pull that heavy four stroke out of the snow.

Product Review: Invest in a WINCH for sleds!!!! They can save your life, especially if you have a Nitro or a Apex. Here is the link:

Is this a forum or a school yard? It sounds like some feelings have really been hurt here, on both sides. For those who do have hurt feelings I am selling a new line of tissues for snowest members caught up in the midsummer "I can't be out sledding so I'm gonna cry and whine about the most mundane sh!t I can think of" routine. They are super absorbant for the extended bawling sessions and are available in 600, 800, and 1000mm sizes. 2 stroke scent is also available for an additional fee. We are currently testing a turbo system for these tissues with a stand alone dispenser. Now before the nay sayers pipe up, I already know what you are going say, "2 stroke scented Turbo tissues with a stand alone dispenser will never work!!", I know I know.
