who has been in an avalanche tell me the story

I am gonna go with it beause there is serious potential everywhere this year.

winter 1998 preist lake. seen a group of guys 8-10 strong trying like mad to summit this bowl......franticly. I asked what up and their buddys, two of them went up and never came back down. I made a poke and pulled the hill. what I found was terrible. the guys had ridden out on a cornice that let go. I crawled out as far as I could and was sick with what I saw, huge boulders of snow and no sign of men or sleds. one other fellow pulled it on an xc hooded rmk, and we agreed it was not a safe place to be. we looked at ways to drop in to help......there was no way that was safe. we bailed off the hill and informed the crew below....it was aweful. the next day one was recovered still alive, burried but alive. the other parished.

I still think I could have done someting more, but I don't know what. that took a lot of wind out of my sails.

had another one fizzle out just above us as we ate lunch on a bowl.

needless to say I am a little gunshy now.

most mountain guy have tripped some mini slides and think it is cool. when we have a snow year like this there will be no mercy, just victims.

I hope to not have upset anyone, but I think learining is the key. there have been too many accidents this year for it to be a fluke. be careful.

opinion

well you know the timing might be bad but the people who read this stuff start to think about there own safety and the saftey of others for example for me i rode in the mountains last year for the first time and loved it, now was i aware of all the dangers that could have happened out there, not a chance so after hearing all what people have to say and the story on the news i really start to think education is key. Read every thing you can take the course and buy the equipment sutibule for those conditions you never know whose life you might have to save, IT COULD BE YOUR OWN and i think your wife and kids will agree

tasteless and absolutely poor timing.....take some time off....

i disagree, i feel terrible about what has happened and had to really try not to shed a few tears,(even though i do not know these people atall) but the more we now, hopefully the less we loose...
Our group is taking lessons this year..allways where gear and two of us have packs... but u cant talk about this stuff enough, if you stop talking you dont forget, but it does tend to slip ur mind abit. again RIP and pray for the families but do not stop people from sharing there encounters. If u need time off then take it, no one is forcing u too read this or stay in this sport, but if u r going to be on the hill please read on because we might need u one day or u need us.

Good on ya for trying to help, but knowing when to back off so that you didn't put yourself or any one else in danger.

and if you want a story

and if you are not awaire of what could happen to you out there i would pick up the dvd the best of thunderstruck and maybe it will get your mind turning im not talking about all the big climbs they do they have the wost crashes on there and number one crash is a slide and you have to watch through the credits at the end of the movie to see how it plays out, it will get you thinking and you will be awaire of the hazards in the mountains.

Watch "A Dozen More Turns" if you want to see a good vid about avalanches.

Avalanche

Last year in Montana three of us were riding together (all experienced) near Ennis, and we had chosen not ot climb many hills that day but all agreed we could go up this hill that had a 20ft rock wall at the top and trees. I went last and as I was just ready to turn out he whole hill cracked under my skis and started to go. I tried to ride it out but went over backwards and disapeared. 300 yards wide and 250 yds long. I dogpaddled for all I was worth and after the thunder and dark was over I was on top of a 30ft deep pile where my buddies were watching from. Luckily they got out of the way. My machine had one ski sticking up out of the snow, but we got it out pretty quick and got the hell out of there. Scarriest thing in my life!
