Whittier....???

This is copied from Dootalk but it is the truth. It will not close until Whittier decides to close it.

Pack out your trash
be respectful down low(wait for the WFO until up high)
and PLEASE stick to the trail until above the town

----------------------------------------

Turnagain and Johnson Pass Close May 1 unless they extend it, which they always doo provided there is adequate snow to prevent resource damage. Although not separately listed, the area accessable via Whittier is included in any Turnagain season extensions.

Most the the area around Whittier was State Land, but was conveyed to the City of Whittier. Therefore, the City holds the trump card. The National Forest Service Land does not begin until you get up top toward the end of Blackstone Bay. If NFS says closed but the City says open, the riding area is restricted to the area around Whittier.

See the attached map here--> http://www.fs.fed.us/r10/chugach/lands/pdf..._landstatus.pdf
---------------------------------------------

There are dealers and certain arrogant douche bags spreading lies that it closed today, but it's simply not true. I'd say which dealer but it'd probably be slander against AMDS...ooops

I hooked I with SnowFlinger on Saturday and the plan was to go to explore Whittier. We gave up on that idea before the tunnel due to ****ty weather and at least went to Turny for a while. It was good to see other riders there, so we were not the only crazies between RVers, boaters, bicyklists and bikers there. It was raining, then snowing, then hailing, at which point we were completely soaked and ready to call it a day. Thanks Paul, for joining me!
Then I went to get some brush from my inlaws place, so at least I made good use of the day after driving all over southcentral AK

Sorry I missed out, I blew my lower back out pretty bad for the first time ever loading my fing sled. Still hurts really bad today but feels a bit better than yesterday. Im planning on riding this coming weekend, hopefully Whittier bound.

Yeah, we missed you too! But you did not miss much, that's for sure... So I might see you in Whittier, uh? Do you guys know what the snow conditions are around Igloo?

Let's see about Whittier again soon and give it another shot.....hope the lady at the toll both was misinformed about it being closed.

Yes! Thanks for taking that first picture at Turnagain Dasha! That Beluga whale rising out of the coconut slushy next to the white elephant eating marshmallows wasn't a hallucination after all....whew:face-icon-small-win. Sorry about your back Mr. REV, I know how much you want to get in one good last ride (get well soon...real soon:beer;:beer;).

Crevasse death

Channel 2 news is reporting someone riding out of Whittier yesterday fell into a crevasse up on Spencer. Anyone have more details.

Next storm is already hitting Whittier. It is a good day to avoid Whittier.

Crevase death

Myself and two friends were there. He drove a tan pick up and has a green AC M7. He was at the parking lot when we got there, and he was waiting for another group? He rode with 4 others that showed up at the same time. Based on the news article he was alone and just asked to ride with the other guys. We saw them prolly 15 minutes before he went in at the saddle overlooking Trail glacier. The crevase was coming down from there headed back toward Whittier. I rode by it and stopped to make sure my buds saw it as well. It was prolly 15' across by 60' wide. It appears he just was not paying attention and drove right into it? It would have been difficult to see in time to stop if you were cruising along as you crested down the slope there, even with the perfect visability we had yesterday. We were half way back to Whittier, running on fumes when one of the guys caught up with us. I led him down to Burns glacier where we could get cell phone reception, called 911, and helped the guy figure out how to find the gps coordinates he marked. So I'm guessing there were 6 others on site and they either did not have enough rope to lower someone down or thought it not safe enough to do so. Apparently snow fell in behind him and buried him. They didn't know if he was under the machine, buried in snow, or went further down a crack into the abis.

Spencer glacier can be misleading and has claimed a number of experienced sledders over the years. What appears to be a wide open snowfield is randomly littered with cravasses and requires constant focus and attention to whats ahead of you. Everyone be careful out there, and if you ride the glaciers, everyone should carry a bit more rope than you normally would, for just this reason.

My condolences go out to his family and friends.

I was one of the people that was riding with him on Sat. A buddy that came along with us knew him and invited him so someone knew him before we left. We were getting ready to head back around 3:30 when someone asked where Karl was. A few went to look thinking he got stuck. Come to find out he fell in. Pat went back to get cell coverage and I went down into the cravasse. I only had 50' of 550 parachute cord and tied off. I actually untied to keep going but it started cracking and making noises. I dug 3' down and noticed a whole bunch of voids. I was stupid for being there. So I climbed back out. At that point he was buried for at least 1/2 hour. We yelled many times and no answer. We couldnt see where he landed and there was a hole that we couldnt see the bottom. Chopper came and well the rest is known. Very good rider. Nice Kid. Very hard to watch. God please bless and make it easier on his family.

Pleasesnow,
Thanks for sharing with us and my thoughts and prayers are with you as well as there will be imagaes in your head for a long time to come. It can't imagine being in your shoes that day. Sounds like you did all the right things and made the hard, and correct choice to get yourself back out of there.
Tim
