Which Used Sled Would you buy when money is tight

Ok I have been looking at sleds and have asked some questions in the IQ forum. I am wanting to get out of my old (2001) 600 Mountain cat and get into something relatively recent.

I have been cleared by my manager for around $5k.

I am a decent rider, I am about 200-210 lbs with gear on and short.

I ride mostly between Smith's Ferry and McCall here in Idaho.

I have looked at two sleds so far one is a 2011 RMK 800 (not the pro)that is about $2500 out of my price with about 1k miles.

The second machine is a 2009 Dragon 800 163" with 1k miles, and recently rebuilt with the MtnTek fix kit. This would be at or below my price range.

The 3rd machine I have not seen but it is a 2009 m8 listed here on snowest for a few $100 more than my price range.

What do you all think or should I just pocket the money and go to Mexico?

One trip to Mexico and the cash is gone! Buy a good used sled and potentially, have years of enjoyment.

I guess if I were in your shoes, I would be looking at a Rev chassis. 800 p-tek in a 151"....but that's just me. :face-icon-small-ton

If you could swing it I would go with the Pro. It definitley is that much better than the other 2.

Have you ridden an IQ or an M8?

The riding on both of them is going to feel light years ahead of your current sled. It will take some getting used to on both of them as they are both more of a stand up riding style than the low slung roadbike style of yours.

At first it will feel wierd as heck. Once you get used to it and you jump back on an loder one, you will wonder how you ever rode it.

I would say try both of those sleds out and see which one seems to fit you and your style better before laying out the cash. IMO its worth a couple hundred to rent em both and jump back and forth between them several times. You will figure out pretty quick which one you want to keep.

Flog the old cat for the rest of the season and save your money for another couple of months. With the new "game changing 13's" coming out there maybe some good deals with people trying to peddle their old iron this summer.

The 09 m8 are a great sled. Handle great and pretty much as reliable as it gets. That would be my pic.

I would suggest an 07 or newer rmk 700 over the 800. They have proven to be very reliable. If you have to have an 800, I would look at a later model M8. Jesse.

The Pro will be the best sled in that group by far. Best sled out of the box ever IMO. If you can't afford a Pro then I would go with the D8, M8 or Rev. The D8 get's some bad press for motor issues. But the one you are looking at has the motor work done. Great sleds that are a little heavy but handle well and can rip when setup right. M8's are reliable, I just don't like the riding position. The Rev is a great sled with a strong motor but the toughest to side hill on. Very stable sled. Don't do the M1000 IMO. Unreliable and I think the M8 is better. Try riding all of these versions and determine what you feel comfortable on.

Thanks guys. I actually rode a Rev yesterday and it rode great but it was not that comfortable for me to stand or sit on because the seat was so wide. I have short legs.

So now I need to try and get some time on the other machines which looks like it might be dwindling away for the season.

Any other thoughts? Is the reason to stay away from the Poo Pro also because of worries with motor? I was thinking if I can get a poo pro with high miles for low enough cost I could either put in the RKT drop in kit or the Fix over the summer.

The M8's are nice though, would one with a 43" stance and zbros shock be too much of a pain to get on its side?

X2^^ There should be alot of good used sleds next year, especially with the poor snow conditions from this year, not alot of miles getting put on em. Save a little extra money over the summer and start shopping for next season. If not, IMO the D8 is the way to go.

700 dragon,or M7 I would NOT buy a 4cfi 800 motor,fix kit or not....Pro of course is the best bet..amazing sled.

Any of the M's are going to night and day difference from what you have. An m7 would be good choice, motors run for ever and you could do some simple mods like a head and save yourself some money. Good luck I am never going to buy a new sled again. Just have to do a lot of asking and lookin before you buy.

If money is tight and I wanted a sled, and my price range was around 5000 or so, I would look for a 2009 xp skidoo! bone stock those sleds riped. 154 at least. I say this as a Poo fan for ever and always.

IMO I would not even think of buying anything that had after market upgrades done to the motor, no matter what sled. Buy stock so you know what gets done to it!

Used sleds can be a ticking time bomb. Outa your choices I would pick the m8 reliability is where it's at.:face-icon-small-hap

m8 all the way

Of your choices and given your situation go with the M8 or as others have mentioned an M7. Super fun to ride and will be a huge upgrade from your other sled. M8's do not disappoint!

Pocket the money and wait a month or two and there will be some good deals on all kinds of sleds!
