Where to put scratchers?

As a rule I find that one scratcher mounted up on the inside of a ski works much better than two scratchers back on the skid. I never (intentionally) run both scratchers up front at the same time. So you save a lot of the wear, and you get much better lube and cooling at the same time.

The catch is that they are more work to mount up front, and don't "hang up" as good. It doesn't take a lot to unhook them. On the flipsdie of that, when you git stuck [through no mistake on your part] and your digging out and find a scratcher down - you can blame it on the extra drag that you weren't counting on. :face-icon-small-win

thanks Ox. Since I already bought the Slidekicks I might give those a try. i've read good and bad things about them...mostly with them falling off.
If I have problems, I'll go to a ski.
 
I have not had any problems with those scratchers falling off. I also leave them down way more than what I should, but I got them, so why not use them!

I'm not sure if you are going to run all of your wheels or not, but I removed my front wheels and mounted them there. As a rule of thumb, you want to mount them as far forward on the skid as possible, if you can get them in front of the wheels, that's best. However, they are really hard to hang up with the wheels there, just doesn't work the best.

Just put some locktite on them and you should be good to go. Make sure you torque them down, I can't remember the specs off the top of my head. I think the package states what they should be at!
 
Ski mounted scratchers work best for short trackers. That way you don't have to lose the front wheels which are very important to relieve pressure off the leading edge of the hifax. If you don't do that you WILL melt the hifax at speeds above 80-90 mph EVEN WITH SCRATCHERS DOWN. The mtn (long tracker) guys don't realize this because their sleds are geared so low that they don't see those speeds for any sustained amount of time. Trust me on this one - been there, DONE THAT! I have never had the slide-kicks come loose on me, but I am not a fan of them. I love the concept, but they just don't have enough down pressure. The more you need them, the less they will werk...

Doo Hartmans in the link shown doo a good job? There aint no hook on them. ???

I have Holz up front. But they doo git bent up when you back off the truck if you don't pay attention. But they bend back too... Those werk!

I run the cable kind of scratcher and never put them up. I mounted them in front of the forward wheels and just let them hang. They help with the lube and also throw a lot of snow into the track that gets to the coolers --- I run 120 to 130f now all the time. The cable scratchers allow you to back up without damage and have replaceable tips -- carbide if you pay extra.

I don't recommend anything that I haven't used myself; I'm not blowing smoke here guys, THEY WORK!!! SLP had a similar version that was actually stronger but they don't make theirs anymore. Only issue I had was to replace the flimsy washers on the Hartmans with stainless steel and no problems since.
