What's the etiquette on warm up just to move sleds?

My sled has always been stored in my garage....I would drag it out and let it warm up before loading on my deck; just as you would do before riding. Might get an enclosed trailer this year that really wouldn't allow that.

Guys with enclosed trailers....do you just fire it up and ride out? Is this something to worry about for motor longevity, or is that being too anal? I wouldn't want to let it warm up in the trailer or else moving out other sleds would be miserable.
 
I'd think a few seconds of idle time before running it out the trailer would be plenty. So long as you leave it idle once outside to do a proper warm-up. Not like moving it down a trailer ramp and ten feet of flat ground is a heavy load on the engine lol..
 
Real cold days, I pull them out of the trailer then throw some snow on the cooler and do not drive it till it starts to melt. Cold siezing a piston is no fun.
 
I dont move my machine till its at least 100 degrees, usaully wait till 120 (operating temp)
 
Two of my riding partners and I all rode Dragons last year so we were really paranoid about everything. We were told to always let the temp reach 100 before even driving them out of the enclosed trailer, so we always dragged them out and then started them outside to avoid smoking ourselves out in the trailer. I know, sounds pretty darn anal, but I did not have any engine problems with 2000 miles. I will continue to do the same this year with my Pro I suppose.
 
IMO, you are not going to have a cold seize just unloading the trailer in a typical SANE manner.

I never let my sled "warm up" in the trailer.


Typically, when it's not bitter cold......

We start em in the trailer...idle for just 20 or 30 secs or so...then gently unload.

Shut them off.

Open all the doors to trailer.

Get dressed in the cold.

Start sleds and do proper warm up to operating temps.

Close up trailer.

Wear helmet and backpack. Put on gloves.


Get powder shots.
 
Let idle till the coolers are warm, shut off and let the motor heat soak for a few minutes, fire up again idle for couple minutes and head up the trail slowly for the first mile or so.
 
are you still storing inside, then loading onto your trailer? that is what i do, so i will start it, pull it outside, let it warm to over 100, then put in on the trailer. that way it, as mentioned above, heat soaks and lets stuff warm up slowly. then when we arrive, i pull it outside and let it warm up again to 120+. nice and easy the first mile. just warming til water temp says 120, after it sat out all night long isn't really sufficient. there are different metals that warm at very different rates (i.e. expanding). when we warm up a jet engine, there is a 5 minute minimum after start in order to allow ALL of the parts to warm/expand, so the tolerances are what they are supposed to be when you give it the onion. i am pretty religious about warming to over 100, then letting it sit while we drive to the riding area. as stated above, i really think the extra effort pays off in not schmokin' da motor.
 
fire in trailer, give it 30 sec or so, gently ride out and allow to warm up...mod sled the same.... never any issues....if you stick a piston riding down a ramp I would not trust riding that sled out of the parking lot....lol

Nope, it would be stored in trailer (non heated) and pulled out to either ride or load onto truck deck.

If lot of people fire up, idle for a few shakes and ride it out gently without issue....that's good enough for me. I don't want to smoke myself out more than necessary.

Yep...and then make sure you STILL do the COMPLETE warm up cycle and heat soak thing before you leave the trailer. Don't wack it OR hold it at steady throttle before you get a few miles down the trail.
 
wow my sled is abused! whenever its in an enclosed trailer I always start'er up and ride her out! I'd never take the time and effort to drag my sled outta the trailer when I have all day to drag my sled around once its good and stuck!

That said, whenever it is sitting on an open trailer I definitely let it sit and idle till at least 90...but then again I do have a 600 and aint nothin gonna bother that thing!

If you let the sled warm up to operating temp in the trailer you will have to wait for a half hour to be able see where your helmet and gloves are. lol

This is my first Polaris and I was amazed at how much these things smoke when first started. My XP was nothing near that amount of smoke.

A 20 - 30 sec start and gentle ride just outside the trailer, then over 100 before starting down the trail has always worked for me.

i guess, simply opening doors or a hatch depending on your trailer will evac smoke. i keep my stuff in the truck where it stays warm.
 
OMG...Ive never went thru an engine and have had ski doos and yamahas up to 22-25 000km on the original engine and I have never bother letting it warm up before to move it.

Ive also own a draogn 800 and turboed it after and
the only problem it had was the reed valves lol. Is this just luck? Maybe but I sure think some of have no confidence in their engines lol.

I'm planning on letting the sleds warm up to 100 before I take them off the sled deck and continue getting dressed
 
Pull cord. Listen for exhaust noise. Repeat until noise is constant.
Let warm up until 32F.
Roll on side and break track loose.
Upright sled and drive off at part throttle until temp is 120, usually about 1 minute. Apply throttle in desired quantity thereafter.
Repeat until Spring.

Haven't fouled a plug since the '06 900.

start it up then hammer on it right away been doing it this way for over 10 years and never had a problem with a motor
