What's the Best Set Up for Edge 700

I have an 04 700 144 all stock except for the baffle's been taken out of the can. What can I do to really wake this up? I know it can be clutched better, so I plan on refreshing the clutches, unless the weights are correct I'll keep them. The springs could be replaced (about 2500 miles on them). I'm sure it can be geared down a tooth or two right? I would like to get a can this summer as well because they do increase the power a little right? Maybe an SLP Air horn?? I wasn't to worried about its performance until I bought a 90 650 as a back up sled, and It could put some serious shame to my 700 :/ (except for powder capabilities).
Any how what would you guys recommend as far as simple bolt-ons to wake this sled up? I'm sure an SLP Pipe will come up somewhere in this thread... If it does, my only concern is how hard will it be to get this thing in tune and keep it in tune? I would rate my tuning skills as minimal because I really don' know what to look for other then it would run better "this" vs. "that" I also ride upwards of 7000' to 12000', would it be worth it to get an altitude compensator?
 
If you want it to produce more power some tuning will be involved anyways.
And you already mentioned one of the simplest ways to get these motors to wake up. Put a SLP singel pipe on it.
Putting a altitude compensator on it means rejetting anyways.
I would get a singel pipe for it and follow SLP jetting and clutching charts.
The jetting charts are super safe. (Rich mixture.)
The air horn combined with a couple of flowrites does wonders on how the sled performs in deep snow. The intakes gets packed with snow if you run in powder. Then the sled wont run right at all. I have 6 flowrites on my edge.

Other than that, maintenance is a key word. Keep everything in good shape.
 
Like was said above, the slp single is hands down the biggest bang for the buck on those sleds. The slp single is no more finicky than a stock pipe when it comes to jetting and clutching. And yes, just use slp specs for setting up the clutches. The aattac system work very very well IF they are installed correctly. More than you would want to do your self most likely. Cost you about 1 hour of shop labor to have a shop that knows what they are doing to install it. imo, that is money very well spent. Oh yes, and X2 on adding flowrites and the airhorn.
 
Would you guys all recommend the SLP pipe and SLP can combo? Or has anyone found a better can to run with the setup? I know how some like loud but personally the pipes on the triple are good enough for me. I would however like the best bang for my buck. Any notes on gearing this thing down a tooth? What if I did the SLP brake rotor,is the less rotating mass worth it?

The can is not too loud. But it is a bit louder than stock.
I brake disc is not worth it. Save that money and buy a SLP head for your setup /altitude.

All good advice here! The can is designed to give the proper amount of back pressure for the tuned pipe. Using a gutted can like your stocker, can actually cost you some HP. Using someone elses can on slp's pipe may make more noise, but less HP.

Haha, I did plan on replacing my stock can, because it is still heavier then SLP's, or any other light weight one for that matter. Just a question, would you reccomend the single over the twins? I've heard the twins can run really well, but are a pain to dial in, and less reliable at that. What about PSI pipes? Any good about these? I know they're great on my triple, but as far as the tuning goes which ones easier to set up and keep it running great? Anything on AAEN?
 
Slp imo hands down makes the best pipes for that motor. I ran 1st a psi single. then an slp then slp twins. Had a 700 and 2 8's in the family with twins. With twins we had to run avgas as we ride 0-3000 feet. The single runs on pump gas, pulls hard, and is actually more fun to ride than the twins. The twins just pull harder at wot. Sounds like the slp single with slp can is the perfect setup for you...

I agree, the single makes good torque. Add the SLP clutching as well, to really wake it up!

I have the SLP single pipe/can combo on my 03 700. Mostly ride between 3000-7500' and it runs the same through out the range. Not finicky at all, no need to make adjustments once everything is setup. Also bolts right in where the stock stuff used to be.
And don't worry about the noise, I thought it was pretty quiet, some of my riding buddies have louder machines with stock exhaust.
 
if you are going to install the atacc tuner i would go with the twin pipes more power and nicer sound just most people are scared of jetting twin pipes. on a 700twin you cant beat that the guys with single pipe:whip: be wishing they had the twin pipes

I would agree with the SLP single combo, SLP air intake, and I would add the vforce 3 reeds (really improved throttle response) and the high compression head added a few hp!

In the past, I would agree with you. However, the quality of the V-vorce reeds the past few years is that of JUNK. If you do reeds, go with Boysens. Same performance gains as Vforce, difference is they last. You wont see any real top end gains with reeds, mostly in throttle response. Great if you go with twins or stay stock. Go with the single, and it isn't needed as much. Sure, it will help!!! but the pipe is huge.
