Whats a Good all Around Mountain Sled ?

Thanks for all the replies, They have given me insight into the doo's and dont's, no pun.

I am keeping a eye out for a 03-04 800-900 EFI LE Mountain Cat. Hopefully I can find one with low milage and reverse I suppose if the price was right I could always change out the chaincase. I like the looks of these sleds, they would be a vast improvment over the prowler, and although its all I know- I still like cats. The 800 motors seem very durable as well.

If something else pops up along the way, for example a RMK, depending on things I may spring on it.

Sorry but I think Skidoo and Yamaha have been scratched of this list. Doo motors seem to have alot of problems. Yamaha sleds with exception to thier 4 stokes are very much like what I have. Either way, for the budget I have, both dont offer much of intrest.

Again thanks for all the input its been very insightful

I will post on here what I get

dude becareful of those later mountain cats, they are notorious for blowing chaincases and leaving you completley stranded.....

might want to rethink about a 2004 doo.....really good sleds IMO

We run 5 900 based cats and I've not heard of them being notorious for chaincase problems, but then, we do run the reverse case on all of them.

Never heard of that on a AC........

As for a doo  I have yet to hear one of thier motors stay togather long enough to make it worth my time. Hey, they all have thier problems I just have never seen anything I liked from Doo..

It's really not too bad to put the reverse case on yourself. There are at least 4 kits on Ebay right now. You might have to change the gear ratio, but it's not that bad, and shouldn't be that expensive.

Well...... I fell into a new machine. I wanted to stay with a AC but ended up with a Polaris. The ower purchased it from a friend who owns a polaris dealership. They took it in on a trade as the motor had failed. Apparently the oil injection took a dump. They put in a brand new engine which has all of 100 miles on it now.

2004 RMK 800 Vertical Edge 159"

SLP goodies, pyrometer, 159" X 2" paddle )Only one missing) bar risers, Fox shocks. PERC electronic reverse, for 3k?

I hope she rides as good as I hope and lasts

I would guess this will be a vast improvement over the old prowler

I know this has been discussed before, I just hope the 800 engine dosent turn into a complete money pit like some have discussed. I dont do alot of extreme riding, I take care of my sleds, I just hope it lasts.

When I left the hills this morning I saw this on the peaks. Its been getting down to around 34 degrees at night. I'm getting the itch

Nice sled Rprecision. There has been a number of crank (or case) failures on those 800's, that you've read about, but I wouldn't worry about that sled....new engine......should last a long time.
My RMK that you talked to me about has 3k mi, no crank problems, runout was .002" at about 2300mi. I credit part of that to keeping the clutches in good shape, helps keep the rotating assmbly balanced if the primary clutch pins and bushings are tight. Also, I put a SLP torque arm (??) and push arm on the engine, helps keep the engine aligned under load. Might want to look into it.
That sled will be worlds apart form what you had and PERC too!

I looked into the SLP engine mounts and if what i seen on SLP's website is the what I think I saw on the motor, it allready has them.

After this season I'm going to get a clutch puller and check the runout.

May do some other preventative work as well

Thanks for the kind words
