Whats a Good all Around Mountain Sled ?

x2 on the m7.

First time i was ever on it i scared the living crap out of my self. Came off a 1999 500 136 summit 1.75 track. Now Im Hooked on the M series. You can pick up a 05 for 3500. A new m7 is gona cost you tho. I paid 8300. Discounted from 10,999.

Yeah not to beat a dead horse, but why not? I ride an '05 M6 and can't say anything bad about it. Handles good in the powder and starts second pull after being rolled...I mean ridden.

My RMK800 would be a good sled for you and it's for sale too!:D $2600 and it's yours!
Seriously, for your needs, a Bearcat or Polaris widetrack would work well, but only for the utility work. They have much better flotation, but are HEAVY and underpowered.
Find a nice RMK 700, 151, '04 - up has electronic reverse. An M6 153 would be good too. M7's are still a little spndy for your budget unless you buy one with alot of miles. Go for the longest track, least miles you can find for your budget.
A 151-153 track sled pulls my 2 kids in a sno coach (2 skis, not near the floatation of a sled) thru up to 2' of fresh and moderate hills. By comparison, a 121" sled w/ 1.5" paddles couldn't get it 20' off the trail before stuck.

Get yourself an 06 M7, you will love it and very reliable.
another vote for this sled, my dad has one and it has had not a single problem, the thing rips up and down, maybe a little much after transitioning from a prowler, but a little more is better than a little less... i guess

on a sarcastic note, ya prolly want a turbo m1000, i mean, those turbo m8s and d8s are just not gonna get ya were you could get on that prowler.

people dont seem to get that everyone doesnt need to get a brand new mountain sled of even one from the last 5 years, he wants to upgrade, but the better half of sleds getting mentioned would outmark that prowler at 5000rpm or less, thinking about the people giving these opinions, a .5 inch track wont even get down our trails, so its hard to give an opinion based on what he needs, not what we would ride.

wait till he gets the bearcat stuck. he will be wishing he had that M.

I thought it looked nice, very utilitarian...

Your right its heavy and I would prpbably have to wait for spring to get it out!

My list is narrowing to 04-06 M6-M7 or maybe a 04-06 RMK 600-700

I'm not sure what I want to do yet, or if I can even afford a newer machine this year. Hopefully, in a few weeks the prowler should up and going with the new track, fixed suspension, new drive bearings, fuel pump. So at least I have something to ride if (or) when the snow flies.

Another thing that someone mentioned, which is very important to me, is low to mid range power. Many of the cats I have been around its either on or off. Some have mentioned the polaris has better low end power ?

Thanks for the post, I apprecate what your getting at. The riding some of you guys do is just insane. Hell my old prowler whould get stuck off the trailer, not to mention your trails.

Last year was a exeptional year for snow, one of those 20 year storms. Hell I am shocked I got around with a broken suspension rail and crappy track like I did. It shouldnt take much to impress me over the prowler !

The '03 and newer 8 or 900 cats have the bottom end power you are looking for. I've never been around a Polaris that has run well on the bottom end (but the quality of the polaris riders that I've ridden with.......) so I'm sure they are out there.

They aren't the newer M chassis, but a lot of guys prefer the older 1M. (Like me for instance) They will have more power than an M7, or an 800 Polaris, and you can find them for $3-4000.

On a side note, I rode a prowler for many years, still have one that goes on rides with us occasionally.

I've personally owned yamaha mountain max and apex and then switched to the new RAW chassis RMK 600 and D700 from Polaris. The polaris are a great package, but, I rode an M7 for the first time last year. And if I had ridden that before I would own AC m7's, I've never been on an easier to ride sled. period. The AC doesn't have quite the power of my D7 and the clutch could use some work, but man, easy to just get on and ride through anything! After that I recommend the m7 to anybody thinking about getting into mountain riding.

For that budget I would buy the newest/cleanest 700 Edge chassis RMK I could find and call it a day. If you get into the higher range of your budget, then you can look at the newest chassis M sleds or Revs....

Don't worry about the 700 part....they outrun most people's 800's of the same vintage and don't chew up parts/cranks nearly as quick.

I have been looking around, Craiglist, locals, e-bay, etc

I think my expectations of 3-4K is a little off.

It going to be very hard to find a late model m6-m8 for that. Equally true for polaris RMK.

May have to wait till next season

One thing I wish I could find is a 00-04ish 800 mountain Cat with reverse. That would probably fit my needs and budget.

Where do you guys look for used sleds at ?

Craigslist, and on here in the swap meet.

You could ride the Prowler for another year OR spend the 3-4$ on a something better that you will have more fun with and hang on to it for a couple years then when the time is right sell the sled you have boughten and the Prowler and snatch up a sled that is a couple years old or something like that :D
