^^ wish i could have found a manual dmax when i bought my 05, the manual trans makes a huge difference in fuel mileage over turning the big ol allison. my buddies got an 04 lb7 with the stick and he averages 20mpgs in town and he drives like a high school kid in a cummins. another buddy has the same truck except allison and he gets about 16-17 tops in town. plus its a lot cheaper to buy a good dual disc clutch than have an alli rebuilt when you decide to go cor the big power.
to some it up:
01-04 lb7 usually the best fuel economy but known for injector issues, but I've heard bosch finally has a set that will last. mechanicaly wastegated turbo, no emissions, good pistons weaker rods, 5spd alli, 01-02 had some issues with headgaskets and had worse tranny tuning with no o.d. lockout. these engines are rated around 310HP 520 ft lbs
04.5-05 lly same internals as lb7 but with different heads which move the injectors outside the valve covers, injector issues not a common issue any more, first year of the vvt turbo, egr, and pcv , still 5spd allison, these engines have an issue with overheating and also popping headgaskets, but it seems to be random in that some do and some don't. i had to replace my headgaskets at about 120k miles these trucks are rated around 310 HP 590ft lbs
06-07 classic lbz are like the holy grail of the dmaxs which is why they're still expensive. all the issues from the previous models were worked out, but don't have the emissions stuff on the newer trucks, slightly stronger rods, bigger cooling system, stronger 6spd allison with tap shift, rated around 360HP 650ft lbs. oh there was also an 06 lly which was the same as the lbz engine but detuned to lly power range.
07.5-10 lmm new body style, basically the same as the lbz but with emissions crap.
i don't have any experience with the lml so i won't comment other than they're rated around 397HP and upper 700s ft lbs for torque.
that's all i can think of off top of my head.
