What Was Your First Sled?

My (the family's) first sled was a '69 Alpine 640er. Dad built a custom coach and the whole family rode at the same time. Mom & dad rode on the big sled and the kids (all 4 of us including the dog) rode in the coach. Once I was old enough to drive it myself, I put my share of miles on it. The old beast would do 60 mph on hardpack, and I gave a few 440's a run for their money. 35+ years later, I still have the thing parked in the barn.

When I returned from my vacation in sunny balmy south east asia in 1967 my dad had a single cl skidoo a 235 I belive I rode it at their farm and was hooked with my next station being in washington I purchased a 399 olympic in 1968.Missed a few seasons due to work locations but have always came back.current sled 09 D8 w/race gas turbo you'd be suprised how many younger guys are amazed when they figure out an old guy rides a D8 turbo

'73 Polaris TX Free Air. Dealer demo that the dealers wife rode the year before. Had 120 miles on it when I purchased for $570. Worked all summer haying and mowing lawns (remember clipping lawn edges, with one of those hand clippers, no weed wackers then) to buy it myself. Still have it along with the receipt. First time out cops caught us riding it on city streets and made us take it home, parents were gone so we took my dad's 12' boat off his trailer and put on a piece of plywood, launched sled up on it and promptly bent the long tongue right to the ground. Man he was pissed! Bob Eastman had nothing on me, at least in my mind!

1st sled

My first sled was a 1969 Airens Sachs 294. 30 mph was probably the top speed, but fast enough for a 5 year old back in 81. It was the sled all us kids learned on before we got to move up to the Yamaha 340 Enticer.

It looked just like this one.

My dad a 77 Yamaha 340. But the first one I bought and paid for was a 1982 Yamaha SRV 540 Fan -- One carbureutor. And it could pull the skis. I remember thinking "I can't believe how fast this is."

1969 - 399 TNT Ski Doo with homade exspansion chambers that came up onto the right hand running board. Loud as h#ll and melted my boots every time I rode it. Work on it for 4 hours, ride it for 1 hour, then start the procedure all over again.

Wife and kids with my 1966 SnoSport. One cylinder, 16 hp. Cats from then on.

first sleds

Hey, Monte..I remember renting a couple 81 yamies at a place called Tiger Run near Breckenridge back in the early 80's. A guy led us around the trails, then let us play about a half hour in a big meadow. No bibs, no helmets, but we had fun.;) The first sled I bought was a used 1982 Kawasaki 550 Interceptor. That was the last year Kaw sold sleds. It was a rocket in a straight line, but that was it. A lot different than my 08 D8:eek:
