i am thinking about mods for next year, but i cant decide what to do. I already have and slp pipe kit, 2 wheel kit, venting, and 141 powerclaw. I am for sure getting a new seat, and doing something with the handlebars, maybe bdx's adjustable steering post that is coming out, a 4 inch riser, or a fastlane 4 inch rise chromoly post with 15 degree forward bend, and a shift assist. I am debating between putting M8 gears in or a torsional conversion kit ( probably cpc or rk tek) but i know almost nothing about clutching and dont want to screw my sled up because of my lack of knowledge. Which one would you recommend? Any other mods that would be worth doing that wont require a fuel controller? or that will shed some weight for a reasonable amount of money? I was also looking at rkt heads but will i need a fuel controller if i add that since i already have my slp pipe setup? I know its a lot of questions but theres no way to find out if you dont ask! Oh and i ride 1500-9000 ft about 1500 ft at home, 4-7000 in the black hills 2 times a year, and i think 6-9000 in the bighorns.

19/42 gearing? so you want him to toss a chaincase on there quick too??:p

The torsion kits are pretty foolproof, I wouldn't worry about going wrong there aside from being sure your reverse still works.
I would think you could add a head, but I'm not sure with the slp stuff.

The problem with adding a head is that they are designed for a certain elevation and he rides from 1500 to 9000............ You can call RKT and see what they say, but I bet they will tell you not to do it with that much variation in your riding elevation.

I talked to the guy at rk tek and he said he could make a head for any or all elevations and fuel types, but dont they have interchangeable domes that you can swap when going to different altitudes?

Now with the torsional kit, which one is the easiest to use and most effective, I like what i see about the cutler one with the quick change helix, and i have heard a lot of bad things about the rk tek with the reverse not working, so i should probably go with the cpc kit? Will i need to get all new clutch weights if i go to the torsional, or wont that affect my primary weights?

Here is a vote for the cpc torsional.
Very well thought out and machined conversion... Great improvement over stock.
I didn't have to change a thing in the primary, and I definately gained performance in both upshift and more importantly, backshift while climbing.

I know this is a stupid question, but why do you need good backshift when climbing, i dont ever climb anything very big and mostly boondock, so i dont really know what the point of it is.

If your sled can't backshift it will bog out when going uphill or taking on too much load.

Put a steeeep helix in a drag sled and it will rock on the flats. Now take that same sled and run it in the steep and deep. You will bog out because the clutch can't backshift into a proper range. It's like driving in third gear when you should be in first.

A lot of stock secondary set-ups have good upshift, but once you hit mid hill they don't backshift quick enough... So essentially you are in too high of a gear and the secondary overloads the engine and causes it to loose RPM which in turn=less HP and you get stuck, loose speed quickly, or have to turn out.
My stock set-up worked ok to 40mph, then quit pulling... On a hill it would bog once under extreme load, and took a second or 2 for it to backshift and get back in the rpm power range.
With the CPC, the upshift is better (pulls harder off the bottom) Pulls all the way to 40mph and beyond, and also reacts quickly to increased load on the engine (hillclimbing and extended deep pow wfo runs) and does not bog... Just consistant upshift and backshift.
A drag racing set-up (clutching) you are really only concerned with upshift and staying in the rpm power range for the duration of the drag race, good backshift is not really an issue... For a good deep pow or climbing set-up, you need to have good backshift characteristics.
A good drage race set-up will most likely bog the engine in a deep pow climb and not be able to react to the load quick enough.

Alright that cleared that up for me, thanks! So right now i am leaning toward a cpc torsional kit and 57/63 gearing and a shift assist for next year. Anyone have any better ideas? and has everyones reverse been working with the cpc kit?

A shift assist is for a compression set-up only.
The torsional conversion will come with everything you need for your secondary.
My reverse is mechanical, so no isues there.

so if you cant have engine reverse with the torsional kits, what would be a good compression setup? Shift assist, rollers (Hi Torque or Rock????), anyone have spring or helix suggestions for my broad range of elevations?

You CAN have reverse with a torsional kit.
Because my sleds reverse is mechanical, that is all I can attest too.
Do some research on the kits and use the search button.
There may be some issues with reverse on the rkt kit from what I have read on this forum.
I have a lot of confidence in CPC's part(s) and customer service.
Dale can put all of your concerns to rest and back up his product(s).

I pretty much have my final decisions, but thought id run it past you guys to make sure im not doing something stupid.

Rear Skid float conversion kit (already bought, got a great deal on it under $400)

AMP 4 inch angled riser, not gonna go with a fastlane chrome moly 4 in post bcuz i would have to put 08 bars on to get any rise.

Shift assist and BDX Rock Rollers

BDX 57/63 gears

2010 Cat seat or used Boss of comparable price
