What gearing to USE

i am running 18/39 and like it. a lot of guys are running 19/42 take your pick, i run the 18/39 because i didn't have to buy a chain if you go to 19/42 it requires a longer chain.

READ..lots of info, and lots of variables to this..like your style of riding (mountains, trail)
clutching..

on an 05 900 in the mountains...i prefer 19/41 or 18/40 ;)

19/42 here pushing a 151x2.4, and I love it. It hits a max speed of 72+mph and pulls very hard in the mountains.

Does anyone know what chain I need for a 19/42 gearing? I have a stock chain with 19/39 gears but also have the gears to run 19/41. My chain right now is too short. I would love to run the 19/41 gears. part # or number of the links would help greatly.

Just ordered mine yesterday to go to 19/42 and I believe the dealer said I needed to go from the 72p to the 74p chain for this gearing. I have a 05 900

I have to think your dealer was wrong on the chain, hopefully someone with 05 chaincase exp can clear it up but.....
19/42 in my 06 took a 76p chain, and the 05 chaincases are longer than 06's

Stock is 90 pin on a 05, you will need a 92 pin.

I am running 18/40 it is great. A 92p Chain is like 90.00 if you can find one with the 18/40 you can use the stock chain. The 06 is different than the 05. Mine is an 05 900.

I'm looking at the gearing charts in the 05 Deep Snow Service Manual and it shows that a 19/43 will work with a 76P chain.
I have a 76P and 20/41, I'm trying to get the 19/43 on there but it looks and feels way too tight.
The chain is super tight when I'm pushing on the top sprocket...there appears to be no slop at all...so tight that the chain tensioner wouldn't be needed. I didn't force it on,, I stopped when I saw how tight it was going to be...IMO, it should just slide on and not have to be forced.
Can someone in the know chime in on this plz

Thx

if you can slide it on then its not to tight. you don't want to have any slack any way. they don't run tensioners on some timing chains. I know they were kind of a pain to get on the edge chassis too. If it doesn't fit I'm sure we can find someone to trade for a 42
