Looks like a good way to have some detanation. Save yourself the trouble of blowing it again, and buy a head.

If you have no choice but to use it you should be able to get by with it seeing as how it'll just be for trail riding not racing or to put up dyno #'s, I've used worse in the past with some sucess BUT if its possible I'd check on ebay, dootalk, HCS and any other place you can think of to get a new used one, important thing though is make sure the one you get is the same as the one good one you already have so your not mixing heads.

How would this cause detonation?

It won't cause higher compression, the ignition, overheat the engine, change your air/fuel mixture, or cause any other sort of preignition.

Drop it back in and have at'er.

Just make sure the head is flat.

Your very wrong my friend.. All those sharp edges in side of the dome where the ring smashed will get hot and pre ignite the fuel. Very simple theory. Trust me, it will happen. Its what I do for a living! But what do I know.

X2....better listen to master on this. BTW - master, you get that motor going yet?

im leaning towards what your saying.. i have alot of theory/reading on the subject. but not a whole lot of hands on rebuilding engines.
as far as i understand it.. if you get a hot spot or even the wrong spark plug, it can become soo hot that it can act like a diesel, and basically fire before the piston is at the right spot. or having 2 firing waves, which will cause turbulence.

but where is the line between okay. and replacement?

All I can tell you is your head has crossed the line. Now, You could find a powesports machine shop in your area and ask them how much to repair it. I personally have seen many engines deto and destroy the top and bottom end because of some one listening to someone that is not qualified to give advise.

Fix it right the first time and you will have a long time of fun with no worries!
