ok so i am sure its a silly question..

i have an 05 900..

i know i have the P-85 primary, but what driven clutch do i have..there is 3 of them listed for the alignment tool...

Polaris with Button Style Clutch
Polaris with Rapid Reaction TSS-98 Clutch
Polaris with Rapid Reaction TSS-04 Clutch

I need a clutch removal tool
clutch alignment tool
clutch holding tool

You don't need any tools to take off the secondary clutch. If I were you I wouldn't take off the primary unless you know exactly how to put it back on. Otherwise you might be buying a new crank. If you want to take off the primary you will need a clutch holder and a clutch puller.

i already had the dealer pull my primary when they messed with it before, and i have the SLP torque arm to install..so i want to align the clutch BEFORE i adjust the torque arm and factory torque stop..but am not sure which alignment tool i need..

You probably have the TSS98, it is easy to tell from the number of torx bolts holding the helix on the clutch. TSS04 has 4; TSS98 has 6 or 8. There is an easy way to align your clutch without tools, P 45, December 2008 Snotech Mag. I'll add it to my P85 thread later today.

When you pull off your primary just remember to line up all the x's, you will be fine.

Top, your advice applies if he removes the cover off of the primary. Then the X's on the cover and the spider are to maintain balance. My buddies 05 900 has the 6 torx bolts in the helix. (tss98)

guys,
thank you for your help..i am at work so i cannot verify the amount of bolts on the helix but easy way to tell..

any issues i should watch for to align the primary to the secondary..i have never "aligned" a clutch before the only manual i have is on my desktop that has a virus :(

thanks again

By the way thanks Ron, I look forward to seeing your update post on this alignment technique.

X3 for me. I am installing a electric start on a 08 rmk 600 and the destructions say a 1 inch offset for the clutch alinement????? Ron your posts are second to none. Any tips on checking dragons where you cant look down at clutches because of upper clutch sheild????....Garry

The wider offset on Estart is likely because of the gear ring installed on the back of the P85. I need to verify offset on the newer sleds but will post without that info if I don't find it soon. There is no easy way to check offset on the new sleds without a tool. There are some alternative methods, I'll add some info to my clutch post as soon as I have some time.

OK I am a little slow But : the alinment tool I purchaced is for my 09 dragon and am told it will work on the 600 ho also. It says to hold it against the secondary on the outside and the offset part should rest on the center of the primary sheave either contacting the fixed portion or no more than .030 space. I understand that part but what should the differance be at the front and back of the primary(front total is back measurement + - how much) and since the starter ring is on the inside why will that make a differance. Also sort of off topic is there a place on the web that gives ALL torgue values for polaris snowmobiles ie...chaincase bolts, exhaust valve bolt., drain bolt for chaincase ect. MANY THANKS

First off the clutch alignment on the 900's is NOT ADJUSTABLE if it is "off"... This is one of the major design flaws of the 900's.

Having the tool, so that you know if its in alignment is cool, but not much you can do about it if its not.

IMO, upgrade to the 2006 front motormounts from www.hiperf.com part # 345-512
These are firmer than the 2005 mounts and resist tearing.

Check the rear mounts for tearing (remove them for inspection) and also the update urethane thrust washer on the PTO rear mount... replace it if grooved.

Also replace the grade 5 bolts holding the front crossmeber for the front mounts to the bulkhead with grade 8 or better and the 4 bolts that go into the engine thru the mounts.

Hi perf also has a great deal on the fuel filters for this sled... good time to replace it.

If you have the motor out.... leave the bolt out of the lower recoil housing that you cant get to with the motor in the sled... if you break a pull start rope, you wont have to pull the engine to replace the rope.

Good luck.

MH..

GREAT ADVICE as usual..

I will check the rear mounts, the front ones are perfect for sure..not sure if they were updated or not..TCP rebuilt my 05 900 motor in feb this year so i hope they replaced the rear ones too..
i am sure all this info is the same for my wifes 06 700..i will check it all anyways..getting crunch time and it seems like i have a to do list thats non stop. haha..

i will attempt to replace the grade 5 bolts if i can get to them w/o the motor being removed cause it is not..

thank you MH/Ron..all is greatly appreciated..

Treemagnet... the alignment tool should be contacting the face of the shieve front and rear on the primary... no gap...

The starter ring does not affect the offset of the clutch (at least not on the 900's)

The clutch alignment tool for the TSS-98 secondary is different from the TSS-04 (lightweight or LW ...tss 04) secondary found on many of the late model sleds... The TSS 04 has 4 bolts hoding the helix to the clutch... the TSS 98 has 8. (as mentioned before).. you will need to check to see what secondary you have.

Also, it's kind of dangerous to be mixing small block sleds and 900's in the same discussion...

Different mounting systems and sometimes different secondary.

Don't assume that TCP replaced anything... If its not on the invoice, its not in your sled (they keep great notes on that kind of thing...) if under warranty, there is no "update" service bulletin that says to replace the mounts front or rear.

Here is a pic of the rear side thrust washer.

The bolts you CAN replace without pulling the motor are the 4 5/16" bolts into the side of the bulkead for the front cross member and the 2 3/8" bolts for the rear mounts into the engine.

Here is a good pic of a broken 2005 mount... not readily apparent from a quick inspection.

yes sir..

i have ALL the service records from TCP from last time i was in UT..i will fish through them and see what it says about the mounts..luckily the guy i bought it from was RICH and took good care of the sled, haha.

i try to compare the 700 and the 900 as far as "updates" and making sure they look simliar when i tear into them both..i compare the amount of wear and since most of teh sled is the same i tend to treat them similar..i will watch how far in-depth i compare them..thank youfor your help again eric..

i will work on the motor bolts this weekend..

real quick..
i will replace the front mounts with the ones from hi-perf engin. (if need be) so can i replace them w/o pulling the motor, can i "hold the motor up" and switch them out..

also,
will the rear 2006 motor mounts from the same website work better as well for the 05 900..
