I'm looking to fork up the dough on an avalanche pack but I don't want this enormous back pack on my back. What is the best and most functional one to purchase?

The best one is the one that you'll wear! People like different things about the different packs, you need to choose what fits best, what options you like, what size you like, etc. If I were you, I'd give the guys at SnowBigDeal a call. They'll get you hooked up with the right bag for you.

I chose the ABS freeride 15 litre. Bought it last year, it's light and fits well, but don't expect to pack a ton of stuff. There's room for some survival gear, spare gloves and goggles, and exterior places for shovel and probe, and that's about it. Also chose ABS for their reputation of saves and my local dealer will exchange the cannisters for $35.00 which they always stock. Also bought a spare cannister to leave in the pu, incase an accidental deployment happens I'm good for the next days ride.

MINE... because I always wear it.:face-icon-small-win

I've owned 5 or 6 of them now, and I can say that the ones I HATED... someone else loved, and the one I like the best other people didn't.

Give snowbigdeal a call, he's got all of them & won't try to push you into something you don't want just because it's the only one he has in stock...

The best pack is going to be one that works when you need it to. You should not factor cost into the equation if at all possible, with that being said though a cheap avy pack is better than no pack. I don't know if you have seen these vids but they are worth watching and helped me make my purchasing decision. I just purchased a snowpulse 15L because I like the way the bag deploys and the protecion it offers.

I agree that snowbigdeal has some good prices and they are a wealth of knowledge. I just got my pack for $250 cheaper than them from a local dealer so better prices can be had you will just have to shop around and maybe they will price match. Last I saw my dealer had two packs left. I do have to state that the price difference maybe due my pack being an 2010 model and snowpulse has a new design for this year.
