Went to put on my helmet and gaaaaaaawdammmm!

i've never had to wash the liner or pads of my helmet. i've always been in such good cardio shape that my head wouldn't sweat - the main thing i learned was to control my breathing. my gloves could be renewed though goddamn them things are rank.

I use mine all year also. The removable pads go in the washing machine from time to time, the rest goes in the dishwasher. My helmet never stinks after that, and it takes no effort. The only thing to remember is that air drying a helmet after being in the dishwasher does take a couple days.

take all your equipment to one of those Esporta Wash Systems, companies that clean hockey equipment. Clean your boots, helmets, riding gear, duffle bags and all. Does an awesome job and smells great.

I know its to late now, but I always take them inside from the trailer when I get home and store them on a wire rack so they dry. I guess im not working hard enough , Ive used fabreze on my sled and dirtbike helmets

Sounds dumb, but get in the shower, soap your head up real good, bring the lid in the shower and fill it with water. Put it on your head and move it around. Do this 2-3 times and rinse it out.

Good as new :)

You should only use rug doctor if you wear a piece.

Otherwise, some mild shampoo will work. Maybe pour some baking soda in the helmet and let it sit for a few days, then wash.

reading this thread has me scared to dig my gear out now. im afraid of what the smell might be, but if it does stink it will be an easy way to piss off the old lady. maybe I will put it under the bed on her side, yes i have a tall bed so a helmet will fit under it.

You're not supposed to pump it in there like you're trying to drown head lice... :D;)

I didn't....just a couple of shots and after it dried, I wiped the helmet out with a damp rag and let the helmet dry. It was still bad.

REVIVING AN OLD THREAD: My helmet smells like an old lifejacket. Anybody know how safe it is to put a 509 helmet in the dishwasher? Are there any special settings, like low heat and/or air dry, that need to be used to avoid damage?

When I put my helmet in the dishwasher, I turn the heated dry OFF. Then put it on a clothes line where it can air dry. The heat can melt and distort it.

If you can find one of these. They were made to attach to hockey gear bags and they blow air through and kill the stench. They made helmet bags as well. I have the blower, helmet bag and a Polaris gear bag. Never tried it with the gear bag, but I hook the lid bag up for an hour after I get done riding.

I also once or twice a year between seasons or if it was very dusty or muddy on the bike, will pull the liner and pads and throw them in the wash

Reading this thread brings back some memories! Several years ago we got a real early snow fall. The kind that allows you to put on a few road miles and make sure things are running smoothly. I got the call, and grabbed my helmet and gloves. Something in the pickup wreaked so bad, the driver grabbed my gloves and flung them out the window.... Then we determined it was the helmet that was unbelievable stench. A mouse had built a nest in the thing. I wasnt about to miss a early ride, so I emptied out a can of Copenhagen in it, and poured some McNaughtons whiskey to disinfect and sterilize/deodorize the thing. Well, I couldnt get out all the smell, but it was a good ride anyways. The things a man can endure for an October ride.... :)
