Went Riding with the Wolves today. Take a look at the picture

Say your in 2ft of fresh fluff how fast can a Wolf travel in the deep stuff????? Just curious makes me think about packing after seeing those pics.

SNOW JW I did some research, 8 mph at a steady pace, 30 to 40 mph in burst. I suppose in the deep stuff they would be able to at least catch you. The first deep stuff we have had all year was this weekend, yet these tracks were on a groomed trail so say you get stuck like this picture shows and they came trotting up the trail, wouldn't take me very long to shoot!

I wouldn't go out on a trip with out my pistol. Especially now that the wolves are growing so rapidly. Heck we even had one get hit by a car down here.

Can't say for certian how fast they can travel in a couple feet of powder, but I know it dosen't slow them down a whole heck of a lot. Plus unlike yote's you can be pretty sure that there is more than just 1 or 2

Snorider. The one hit by the car in your area, DNA test shows hybrid. But, the one hit north of Reardan, Tum Tum area, DNA shows 100% wolf out of a pack from north Idaho. The ones south of Creston, nobody seems to know where they came from or how they got there.

Yeah because wolves hunt and kill really noisy snowmobiles that smell like humans. JK LOL....................

Did you read the post about getting bloody noses from the 10K to 4K ride really fast, the blood on the hand in the picture, that is what they would smell so I'm thinkin yeah they might like to eat me! Or is that human blood? :):D

Both wolves and big cats need to be closer to the endangered list these days. Lots of M.L. in this area these days, just a matter of time before a 2-legged carcass is found.

when i groomed for the pig out ride there were 5 sets of fresh tracks by taiseys cabin, and then there was 3 sets in eagle cr where we turned up to coddington and another couple down by mica meadows. all heading different ways.

There was a mountain lion shot in a backyard right near downtown Saskatoon, SK. It had a tracking collar on it that was put on a month prior in South Dakota. Those things cover some ground in a real hurry.

The wolves arent gonna stay away. Its up to the damn people to learn and stay away. If people wanna get that close to them, its their fault for what happens. Same with kids, but I guess some gotta learn the hard way.

We dont shoot murders when they get close to people, why shoot a wolf?

Track and shoot them up boys, a .22wmr works great, doesn't damage the fur like the bigbore and centerfires.

Stay out of their way, they will stay out of yours.

Wolves on ATVs

Nope, never saw them just the tracks. We did see one last summer on ATV's just sitting on a stump, It didn't stick around.

What model of ATV's did this wolf ride. I can hear the Elk now, "Oh no! Wolves got ATV's".

After completing one of our 80 mile rides, our group discussed this exact point. The concensus went with at least one of us pack, just for the possibility of having to involuntarly spend the night.

That's really the primary reason I carry while riding ... you just never know ;) I would rather have it with for piece of mind ... hopefully never need to use it.

That's the problem, we don't have the expanses of land you Canadians do for them to roam AND you guys still get to shoot them, therefore they are afraid of humans.... the ones here in the states are becoming more and more bold. Had a couple run-ins with them were their behavior surprised me in the last couple years...

I ran across a very large track last weekend in the Wisdom, MT area. 2nd time I've cut fairly fresh tracks up there this year. Guess I should take some pictures next time.

A buddy of mine lives close to the hills here. He had two wolves come onto his 5 acres and tear up two of his goats. I suppose it is his fault for leaving the goats out on his property, over night. I just hope he never lets his kids play outside at night. By the way the wolves didn't eat any of the goats. They just killed em. For the locals in Idaho this happened in Horseshoe Bend. When he called the fish and game to see what he could do. They informed him that if the wolves were on his property threating family or livestock he could shoot them only after firing a warning shot. He hasn't had to shoot one yet but i do believe that there has been a couple warnig shots followed by call to the fish and game. They continue to deny their existence that close to town.

My cousin in law and his dad were cornered by about 5 up deer hunting this last fall. Only after firing shots to scare them away did they leave. Yelling and throwing things did not work.

You better believe that they are not afraid of us.
