Got sick of putting a new belt on my 2012 PC every day and I really liked the Pro ride I rented last trip. I found a great deal on a Pro rmk 163 with 500 miles, and today was the first ride.

Epic snow great day, so much fun. Heading down at the end of the day and guess what happens, lose a cylinder skirt and drop it into the crank. Talk about no luck.

Anyone know the turn around time on something like this. The sled still has warranty but I have another trip planed for the 17th of this month.

Oh boy. I feel your pain, same thing happened to mine, but at 1500 miles. My turnaround was about a week. I took the sled in late Thursday afternoon, and could have picked it up the following Thursday. I thought that was pretty good, I ended up with a brand new engine. Tons of threads on here on why people thing this is happening. I was actually able to ride mine out of the woods at a really good clip. It wouldn't idle for sh!t but it ran at about 8000 rpms down the trail. I am going to get more warranty for my sled and ride it like I normally do. If it happens again...then some changes will be made.

I definitely knew there were risks but figured I'd get closer to the 12-1500 mile mark like most are posting, the fact that it happening on the first ride is kind of hard to swallow. On well hopefully it will be ready for the next trip and then all will be good (for another 500 miles anyway LOL)

that sucks ..but hang in there..normally most dealers can turn one in less then a week, now, call the dealer, tell them when they put it back togeather, to turn the oiler up to at least 40 to 1, start putting a pint of oil in every tank of fuel and warm it up good every time it cools down before pinning it..do those things and it should hold togeather pretty good...welcome to poo by the way..and how did you like the sled before it went boom....

Spend the extra $ and have your dealer put MTNTEC's fix kit in it( $570.00) or spend big bucks and put Indy Dans stroker in it. ($4200.00 with a 5 year warranty). It suck's but when you consider a 150+ hp sled @ 430lbs would have cost ??? five years ago maybe you can justify the shortcomings.

I did actually turn to oiler almost all the way up right when I got it so thats done already. I'll have to look into the fix kit, what have you guys heard about RKT's drop in, he also claims to fix the problem with his kit.

I have to wonder what the reasoning behind this would be. It's being fixed under warranty for free, why dump a bunch of cash now? This is a solid suggestion for when the warranty runs out. I will probably do an RKT drop in or 858 kit if I still have my sled when the warranty runs out.

That really sucks you had such a big issue on your first ride. You are going to love the sled though. It should be fixed pretty quick. And at least now you'll have a brand new motor so you'll know all the history behind it. You can break it in yourself, make sure it's warmed up properly, etc. Never know how the previous owner treated it.

Make sure to check the oil pump setting. They are set too low from the factory to pass EPA regs. (Edit: I see you already did this) Also consider mixing fuel 100:1. My dealer recommended it and I figured why not... it definitely can't hurt anything.

Do you still have your Pro Climb? I think its time we see the first Poo Pro with the M800 Suzuki Engine in it..........

You would have the ultimate Mountian Sled Period!!!!!!!!!!

Good point, it is just frustrating is all. Great sled, to bad about the engine?

Not a bad Idea. I still have my turbo 1000 as well, maybe I can cram that beast in there somehow.

can you link to more info on mtntec's "kit", or what it involves?
i've been researching fixes.. i've only found details on rkt's so far.
also, any info on indy dan's offerings? i've heard he has some sorta 'fix' as well.
i don't want to have to pay for a crank, cylinder(s), case, etc. next time it happens...outside of warranty.

thanks.

Warranty Vs "Fixes"

Couple of things I have been thinking about...

Say I get a drop in kit from RKT, this will run about $800? This kit in essence voids my warranty and I am up a creek without a paddle in case something engine related happens again.

How much more warranty does $800 get you? Two years maybe? Or maybe it is around $900 for two more years? From what I have read this warranty will replace my engine if the dreaded "skirt" issue occurs again.

I am not saying that the RKT kit doesn't work or that buying extra warranty if you don't have it is the best thing to do. I am just throwing some options out there.

The thing I do know is that after I found out a new engine costs around $3700 I almost pooped my pants. For me, that would be tough to swallow without warranty coverage. Although this is snowmobiling, so you are allowed to be as fiscally irresponsible as possible.:face-icon-small-hap

I have been trying to wrap my head around the cylinder skirt issue and in my non-mechanical mind I am envisioning kind of a "hot dog down a hallway" theory in relation to the pistons and cylinders. Sounds like a case of crappy tolerances. I think adding lubrication may help other issues, but not this one. I would love to see some longevity results from the RKT kit down the road, but unfortunately there just isn't time yet. Personally, I am just going to plow away and see how long the next one lasts. Although, now I noticed I have an enormous amount of belt dust and a wildly frayed new belt after I had my new engine installed, but that's another topic...

Not to burst anyone's bubble but I'm just calling the kettle black. Last year my brother's 11 pro went down it took 5 days to fix it, not bad at all. Also last year my 11 pro went down and mine was fixed in 3 days again in my opinion not bad. This year my brother's pro went down. That was on Feb 20th (pres day). It went into the shop on Feb 21. My 12 went down March 2. I called the dealer who we have a great relationship with On March 8th. This was the jist of the conversation- Polaris is taking pictures of everything this year, trying to get out of any warranty. If you have a can, pipe, or sneeze on the machine they are looking for an out. The pictures get sent to "Mother Polaris" and there they get approved if nothing voided the warranty. This process is taking time. To make matters worse the dealer told me the case halves are on back order till March 23ish. I'm not trying to start anything or sound like a cry baby, just telling my experience right now.

So my question is this why is Polaris so worried about warranty if the Pro 800 is so good??? I would love to know how many Pro's are starting to bite the dust??? I wouldn't doubt it if Polaris is eating it on warranty right now therefore causing them take longer on processing warranty work. The problem with that is we the consumer get stuck with the crap. If it's true that case halves are back ordered that means that sled will be in for over a month. That's unacceptable, we the consumer pay a premium 11k-12k for a pile of crap that have to be towed out, loose time on our trips, out diesel, lose faith in our sled if it's going to breakdown, etc, etc.. And now a month loss of riding to an already short winter. I don't know about you guys but I think it's time to give Polaris a wakeup call, if they want to be the best it's time to give us an engine. What engine series from Polaris has been class leading in the last 10- 15 years and please don't say the 900. I was watching some 2013 pro videos on YouTube and of course you get all the hype. I just couldn't help from thinking what good is belt drive and those running boards if the power plant goes out and sits in the shop. So sorry guys not buying a 13 till Polaris pulls their head out of there butt and starts to give us the consumer a total package sled instead of just a great chassis. Why do you think there are so many people on here talking about throwing an E-Tec or Zuki in the Pro Chassis and having the ultimate sled? It's because Polaris doesn't come to the table with their weak, underpowered, unreliable engine. For those that have had issues it's time to get Polaris’s engineers numbers and tell/write them our frustrations. To those who haven't lost an engine I wish you well till you do.

Quick question: Are the 12' 800's just as succeptable to lose the piston skirt as the 11's? Season is over for me as work is starting to ramp up. I managed to put 500 miles on my 12 with no problems. Didn't do anything but add a Jaws can. Didn't turn my oil pump up or add oil to fuel except for the first tank.

I assumed Poo put different pistons in the 12's but if replacement engines for the 11's are going down too, then they are probably the same components with no upgrade.

If it was only pistons it wouldn't be so bad, but its cylinder skirts that are snapping and dropping into the crank case, and yes the 12's are starting to go down as well, seems a little better though.

Stock?

Are you running your engines stock?
