Well I'm going back to college but cant figure out what I want to go in to???

Good choice in ME, hard work, but will pay off in the end.

I'm in your same boat essentially.

Been through motorcycle tech/small engine tech program. It's my hobby, and turning it into a career really drags the hobby part away. Got out of it, but great thing to do on the side.

Went back to school, got a A.S. in Fire Science. (saw you thought about FF'in)
Been a volunteer FF/EMT for 5 years and been applying for full-time position for 5 years. After 5 years, got a part-time FF/EMT in a department that is way understaffed, but city is on a hiring freeze. Very stressfull. Constantly training studying and getting certifications.
I'm finding I'm having a hard time not getting hired around here without a 4year BS degree.

At this point, I'm farming full-time seasonally, part-time firefighting, and wrenching quite a bit, as well as my time volunteering.

Not giving up on FF'in, been in my family and after doing it, know it's exactly what I was born to do. So I've decided to go back to school to get a BS while I continue hunting for a full-time FF'in job.

Just roughing it with life until I get to where I wanna be.

Nobody can ever take education and knowledge away from you though, learn all you can!

I know how that is I was a sled mechanic for a while and got sick and tired of fixing guys stuff instead of riding mine every weekend.

Exactly, it was like that with everything! All my riding friends were out when I was in the shop, never failed.

well having been recently wrongfully terminated and not being able to find a job fr the life of me because of the economy and lay-offs in the area. I have decided to go get a degree but would like some insight into what some of you guys do.

I love to wrench but cant see myself retiring from it as i doubt my body will take it that long with already having knee and back problems.

I have thought about landscape architecture, it, forensic science, criminal justice or just business management as these are some things that interest me.

What does everyone here do? Any suggestions or ideas on figuring out what is right for me?

I dont need to be a filthy rich person (although it would be nice) just want to provide a good life for my wife and kids.

manwhoring.....................need i say more!!!!!!!!!!!

Mechanical Engineering, at Michigan Tech if you can stretch that far. Great school and is in the top 5 engineering school in the nation. I'm a first year right now and love the school. Alot of math but leads to an unbelievable amount of jobs. in the next 5 years their is going to be a total of 32 million jobs world wide looking for Mechanical Engineers. And with the amount of snow here you're going to love it. Anything about it that you would like to know just PM me.

Not a chance of moving, I have been in my house less than 2 yrs and have a 6 month old son. Plus all my wifes and my families are close by. I highly doubt I would "love" the michigan snow moving from right next to the Utah mountains. Thanks for the suggestion though. I have heard a lot of good things about USU's engineering programs and they are building a new eng. facility in the same building that my wife goes to school thats only like 15 min away.

Cant say I dont blame ya for moving. I wouldn't move if i was you either. And as far as loving the snow here your right. Northern Utah would be hands down better than northern Michigan! Didn't look at location, my bad. I guess im just going to have to keep telling myself that snow is snow, otherwise im going to go crazy talking to all ya mountain fellars!!
But seriously, engineering i your s going to be here for a long long time and you can work anywhere you want. If you want to work close to home ME is a great choice. Don't know too much about USU's program but a engineering degree from a university can take you along way in many directions.
Try looking around and seeing what different degrees have to offer. You have to make sure you are going to like what you are doing otherwise you are just going to be wasting your time! A buddy im going to college with right now hates his major and wont switch because its been in his family for two generations. He is an amazing artist and great with words and such, and right now he is 3 years into a Civil Engineering degree!! Says he wont switch because it would upset his parents.
Think about what it is that you would like to do, and look and see what you need to do it!
Good luck,
Nolan

I just finished a BS in business admin. through a STEP program at NNU in Idaho and it is incredible program. They offer online courses and the program is accelerated, so a quick turnaround. I did 86 credits in 20 months. Also, I read online about four months ago that a business degree is one of the top three jobs in the nation. You mentioned landscape architecture and I always wanted to do the same thing, but I am noticing the landscape architects are sitting around right now. If you decide on architecture, I know Utah State has a great program. Also, I have heard (no 1st hand knowledge -disclaimer) to stay away from University of Phoenix. Here is a link to the STEP program online.

Best of luck to you and have fun :)
