Well I'm going back to college but cant figure out what I want to go in to???

Well having been recently wrongfully terminated and not being able to find a job fr the life of me because of the economy and lay-offs in the area. I have decided to go get a degree but would like some insight into what some of you guys do.

I love to wrench but cant see myself retiring from it as I doubt my body will take it that long with already having knee and back problems.

I have thought about Landscape architecture, IT, Forensic science, Criminal justice or just business management as these are some things that interest me.

What does everyone here do? Any suggestions or ideas on figuring out what is right for me?

I dont need to be a filthy rich person (although it would be nice) just want to provide a good life for my wife and kids.

Environmental politineering ;)

gonna be a lot of jobs in that coming up soon I bet.

Biological Lab technician, bio is the future. Or, maybe chemical.

Firefighter isn't the job if your knees and back are already hurting.

Just top expand on that my wife and I made about 50K last year together and I would like to be making about 65-70 on my own so she doesnt have to work and benefits are obviously a big deal.

Non Destructive Testing (NDT)

Google the above and you will get an idea for it. Not so well known, and will always be work in this field.

5 Main methods of NDT...

Ultrasonics
Radiography
Magnetic Particle
Liquid Penetrant
Eddy Current

Once you have read into it, if your interested PM me and I would be happy to give you some advice.

Good luck!

Take an aptitude test.
It will show where your strengths and weaknesses are. I would focus on something that you also would enjoy, instead of just the money. Many have jobs that pay well, but are miserable....

Bartender, everyone on this site likes to drink. :) Business management, open you own liquor store, lol.

I totally agree. I have had jobs like that and the money isnt worth it I hold my family/personal life very very high on the prioity list above money and career and right next to my sled :D

Really a good idea but kinda goes against my religion.;)

Getting some good ideas keep them coming. real life experience and some more info would be great. such as training/schooling, salary, etc.
Thanks all

Geology.

These guys are coming into high demand and making bank as we will always be on a quest for natural resources. They are necessary in land development, etc. Very broad opportunities for jobs and you probably wouldn't be stuck behind a desk 24x7.

Mechanical engineering. Applies to a lot of different types of work, and you can work in almost any industry you want.

Going back also, doing construction management, good pay, nice thing is commercial is pretty constant work. Plus It makes it so that you can live almost anywhere you want since construction is pretty much going on everywhere.

Forestry, then go to work for the Forest Service, work your butt off for 20 yrs. and climb the ladder until you are the H.M.F.I.C. then promote snowmobiling. So our grandkids can still ride.

Not sure if I would do this.

I am in a construction manager (15yrs exp. in commercial & Govt.) and I am still working and have a good job. But there is a steady decline in work and people who have work on the books for next year. Plus there has been an over saturation of college trained CM's for the last 4 or 5 years. This is not a position that should be taught in school. These jobs are 20% higher learning and 80% common sense and exp.

Best of luck though. I personally couldnt imagine paying a school to teach me what i know. When i learned out in the field and got paid the entire time.
100k year and no school debt. But I may have just been lucky, but I am ok with that.

Again good luck guys.

I had a wrongful termination case 15 years ago, which worked out really well for me. If you were in a union, get them involved, if not get a lawyer. My case took 18 months. Got my job back (which I didn't want), and got the satisfaction of telling management to F.O. Didn't go back to work with them, took a layoff, got back pay plus interest at a rate equal to my retirement account, plus a large settlement check. During that period I was working for cash (you know the benefits there;)). So it can work out really well if you play it right.
