Water Pump problem

My 2003 rmk 800 started over heating. sounds rough when it does. it isn't curculating coolent to the rear heat exchanger and blows out all the anti freeze threw the over flow.

wondering if this is the whole water pump or maybe just the belt. if so what does this cost?

Is the running board cooler warm or cool?

If it's cool then you might need to change your water pump belt.

head O ring or cracked head , It will pressurize the coolant system and blow out the water via overflow then overheat

If the impellar in the water pump, starts spinning on the axle, you will not get circulation to the rear coolers, and the engine will spew coolant from over heating. The nut on the axle may also loosen sufficiently to touch the housing, and allow the impellar to lose its purchase on the axle and spin. Water pump rebuilding is as artform that is not fully appreciated.

I agree there is some artfullness in water pump rebuilding, especially when just throwing in all new parts gets expensive real fast. Anybody have any tips on rebuilding them? Every time I put in a used water pump from the boneyard I end up regretting it.

Start with your belt it takes 10 minutes max to have a look at it and see if it broke. Like someone said before it also drives the oil pump so dont go running it anymore until you've had a look at that. Belts are 50 to 60 bucks when i did mine but... i had a long tow out on a bluebird day with fresh snow so its always a good idea to change em out every couple of years.

Before going through all that work, I would check your compression. Make sure its exactly even in both cylinders. I had a bad o-ring in the head last season and it did the same thing. Overheated and burped air and coolant out the reservoir, blew the cap clear off. Water pump worked just fine, but it was sucking air through the head gasket. A quick compression check might save you a lot of unnecessary work. Just a thought.

Had similar trouble on my 04 when it was almost brand new. Took off the water pump cover and low and behold the nut and washer fell off in my hand. I put the nut and washer back on and haven't had a problem since. Must have been a Friday or Monday sled.
