Wanting a loud silencer fro 06 900 SW

just remember that dBs are on a logarithmic scale...10bB louder=ouch! Also, 8 hours on a stock snowmobile at 90-96dB will lead to permanent hearing loss. Throw on a set of stingers and go to over 100dB and that goes down to the 1-2hrs before hearing loss. As a frame of reference a baby screaming at full volume is about 104dB next to your ear (hence we deal with them), and a single shot from an AK-47 is instant hearing loss at 140dB. Perhaps for your own good you can appreciate why the quieter can is fine?

yea but how many poeple ride there sled with there ear next to to the exhaust? i bet not to many.

When I worked at a manufacturing plant years ago, I did not have my head up beside the equipment I was operating. Sat back a good ten feet or more and still had noise induced hearing loss. Kind of the ****s not being to hear a complete conversation and having to ask people to repeat themselves. And this is even with the $6000 worth of hearing aides I have parked in my ears. Sooner have put that money towards a newer sled.
Protect your hearing.
One day it would be nice just to be able to hear complete silence again instead of this constant ringing.

Here is a vid of mine with the mbrp. It is loud when going wfo. In vid isn't more then 1/2 to 3/4 throttle. I am running a dynoport full exhaust now with the big volume can which they say +5 to 6 db whereas the big core barker can says + 10 to 12 db. Never had any problems with the mbrp or dynoport cans.

Very cool video. The volume sounds about the same as the CPI. How do you like the DYNO Port and how is the volume on that compared to the MBRP?

One last point and I will digress: when you get off your sled at night and you hear that little ringing sound in bed (called tinnitus), that is a sign that your body had to compensate for a sound that was loud enough to cause damage. Same thing happens at live music venues. I have SLP set-ups on sleds I have ridden/owned and still get that effect. It is true, medicine really has nothing to help with this kind of hearing loss. And as noted above, when you loose your hearing all you get to hear is that ringing. For the rest of your life. Just food for thought....

The dynoport is much quieter then the mbrp and I am assuming the other dynoport, the barker one would be as loud or close to the mbrp. I haven't used the mbrp one since got the full dynoport pipe set. Just figured since the can was made for that pipe would work better.
Up north here people couldn't care less about loud cans, no regulations here since small population and miles of miles of riding out there rarely anyone in site. No trees so just pick any direction and go.

Next time you say the loud can doesn't bother you, let your buddy ride your sled, tell him to do a WOT left hand sidehill above you so the exhaust exit is pointed as directly towards you as possible... you will then see how loud your 'cool can' really is... After trading sleds with a friend a few years back, he bought a quieter can... the noise is never as loud when you are riding the sled, the exhaust points AWAY from YOU!!!!!

There is no regulation on things till they get abused and become a problem... Keep doing it and we will all be forced into complying to another LAW... just ask the folks in Colorado, THEY ALREADY HAVE A LAW!!!!!

Asking a fellow citizen to excuse you for......

Loud pipes, smoke from the machines, oil from the pipes, scaring the animals, damaging trees you run into, damaging tree tops you run over, causing avalanches and costing money for search and rescue, people leaving garbage(I hope no one in here ever does this), etc. Take your pick, if you eliminate one they will focus on the next one.

The bottom line is the better you can protray yourself to the people who will close our riding areas PERMANENTLY, the better off we will be. All you are doing is giving them more amo and NOISE IS A VALID TARGET

All you do with a loud exhaust is make EVERY ONE OF US look bad

I agree with you unfortunately the real people behind closing these areas never hear a snowmobile, they never see a snowmobile, and the majority of them have never even been to these areas. They sit in there homes and offices in other parts of the country and look at beautiful photos of the areas where we live and ride. They believe whatever they are told about the evils of snowmobiles and send there money to the big organizations who are fighting to close these areas.

Many of them YES...

But how do you argue the point when they are RIGHT about modified sleds being loud?

I often ask my buddies or even other sledders around me if my sled is loud to them... I have not heard a complaint to date on this sled running my SLP....

Next time you are at your favorite riding area, make it a point to ask a few others how loud your sled is and if it is too loud in their opinion... a fresh perspective from someone else you don't normally ride with may surprise you.

Using that logic the simple solution is to ban modified sleds. Ban all turbos, Ban all after market exhaust, Ban any modifications to the engine of the parts put in place from the factory for it to meet noise requirements. Problem solved.

The goal of most of these people is to ban all snowmobiles and any kind of motorize vehicles in these areas.

There is no need to ask if your sled is Loud, if it is you know it. I would love to get a nice quieter can for mine that doesn't hurt the performance. Heck, I went through 4 SLP cans before I gave up on them.

Since being on here I have found out about a couple different ones I am thinking about trying. All I need is a small donation of $350 to pay for them. In return I will give you a cracked SLP can and a noisy CPI can for you to do whatever you want with.:face-icon-small-ton

Don't kid yourself about the SLP being a quiet can either. I had more people tell me that the sled was noisy when I had that can and was riding down in West and Island park. Have one of your buddies take your sled to the bottom of a hill and come up towards you while you stand there and listen. :face-icon-small-sad

i dont really care what you say about those areas closing, cuz i dont ride there lol. but i do undestand how it can be frusrating i can ride where ever and when ever i want, guess thats the perc i get for living in the boonies lol. today they blasted at the open pit mine that is 10 miles away, and it shook my whole house sounded like something blew up in town. lol

the only reason i have a can is weight loss, if they could make a quiet light weight performance adding can i would buy it. until then i will have what i can get, loosing 20lbs on my sled makes a big difference. my 3 cents lol.

(btw idont mean to be rude when i say i dont care, it just doesnt affect me being lik 1500 miles away lol)

If your looking for a LOUD can, you should check out a Rumble Pack... that's what my buddy had on his 06 and it was absolutely ear piercing on hard snow, That should get-r-done for ya!

Here's a vid so you can hear....

Ouch, that is similar in level to the CPI but something about the pitch of that thing hurt my ears just watching the video.

Someone really needs to work on getting sound files on all the exhausts so we can all find out which ones are actually quiet, with feedback from riders on them. That would be a great post to be able to use for reference.

I realize this is not a 900, but still gives you an idea of stock, SLP, and Rumble pack....

none of those sound very loud on that machine. The SLP almost seemed like it might be quieter than stock with a mellower sound at idle. The first 05 SLP I had, had a deep mellow sound to it. The later 06 models had an annoying ring to them.

Yes, none of them are very loud at all compared to their counterparts on our 900 sleds.... but it gives you a valid comparison can-to-can on an identical sled at the same time in the same conditions.... Having just heard the vid of the Rumble Pack I just posted a moment ago, you see why I am now such an advocate against excessively loud cans... you could hear the echo across the mountain valley for about 10 seconds after each throttle braap... Just annoying and damaging to the ears....

We are not the only forest users, there are other sledders, skiers, snow-shoers,, children on play sleds, and wildlife to consider.... Like it or not, what other sledders do DOES have an effect on all of us - The avalanche at the Big Iron Shootout last year is a perfect example.... I don't live there, but the fact that I have a sled means I have something in common and the unfortunate choices of that event do hold a sour taste of snowmobiling in the eyes of the informed general public.

If I haven't made my case by now then I don't think I ever will...

At this point I wish you good luck with whichever can you choose to run and I hope you consider the different thoughts we all have on the matter:beer;

Happy sledding:face-icon-small-hap
