I have a SLP silencer on my 900 Switchback but want a louder one for out west. My buddy has a Super Q on his 900 so i want to try somthing different. Louder the better! Any ideas?

There is nothing about western riding that requires, needs or deserves a louder can. Spend your effort on jetting, clutching and skillful riding.

In fact, don't come to Colorado with any louder can. Its my personal opinion as well as the law.

I have had 4 slp cans on the 900 in 600 miles. Every one cracked in a few rides. CPI doesn't break and is on almost every 900 I know. A quieter can would be nice but spending 200-350 for a new one every other ride kind of sucks. Can you recommend some that are durable enough to survive on the 900?

The SLP on mine has been on it since I bought it last year and is in perfect condition... over 1200 miles on it by myself alone and the sled has 3300 miles on it... not sure when the can was originally installed, but it is an 05 style can, only available in '05 so it has to have quite a few miles on it.

My buddy has 3 seasons on his standard 05 & 06 style SLP can, looks and sounds new....

Personally I would not go with anything louder than an SLP... there is just no excuse to be loud and risk making our favorite sport look WORSE to the public eye!!!!!!!!!

The first one I had was the 05 style; It lasted about 300 miles. I really liked the sound of the 05 style muffler and was mad when SLP sent me the newer muffler as a replacement. The 05 muffler seemed to be made of heavier material than the 06. All of these failed before I had someone balance the clutch for me which probably added to it. There are however several other members on here with cracked SLP cans and SLP pipes that are cracking where the bracket is welded to the pipe and they do have balanced clutches.

I posted picture of all the broken cans in a thread here on the 900 forum. http://www.snowest.com/forum/showthread.php?p=2481398

I still have my last one in the garage and I am thinking about having it welded and braced like the Dyno Port muffler I saw.

On another note, Dyno Port test the SLP muffler on their dyno and the machine lost 5 hp with it. :face-icon-small-sho

Sounds like you had a less than stellar experience with the cans, nothing is perfect though... how come some people have better luck with Fords or Chevys as opposed to another?

To me, it's not worth pizzin off other sledders (let alone other forest users or the general public) just to 'hear the power'. I had a Snow-Stuff Rumble Pack on my 02 800 RMK and that thing was pretty loud... that was also my first mountain sled and I thought it made me 'cool' cause I was loud.... Now that I have ridden for a few years I would rather let the riding be the factor of how cool a guy is... all a loud sled does for me anymore is pi$$ me off as they go by... my hearing quality is too important to me and it's not getting any better.

I'm not saying all aftermarket cans are bad, but something that is 'loud just to be loud' is just annoying and hurting our sport.

Sorry, but that's my honest opinion.

If you shoot yourself in the face with say, a battle ship ... it'll be REEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAALLY loud.

And then, the rest of us won't have to put up with you psuedo-drag racing through parking lots putting up with an obnoxious can on your sled that did absolutley nothing for your power band to begin with.

It's a win-win situation here.

I don't have the CPI because I like loud. To be honest I loved the sound of my 05 SLP can and if I could get another one and I thought it would last I would.

The 06 SLP, I hated. It was louder and had a higher pitch to it.

I have the CPI because I have the whole pipe from CPI. There were not a lot of choices, the giant stock muffler was not staying on there and SLP mufflers had performed so poorly I went with CPI.

If the OP had come on here and ask what is the best pipe for the 900 and not what is the loudest the overwhelming answer would be the CPI, but because he asked what was loudest he got flamed for it.

I think if we did a pole on here to see what exhaust can's everyone was running who had a 900, CPI would be the hands down winner with a large majority of the members here using it.

SLP would win hands down for the pipe most ran. SLP would also be number one for complaints for failed mufflers.

I run an MBRP, I really like it. It's loud but not outrageous, I know there are a few others on here running them too.

Will you be in Cooke city for the ride. I would be interested in hearing it.

Has anyone ever put together a list of which mufflers are the quietest for the 900 with the least problems?

i seriously dont see the problem with loud cans, when your out in the forest who cares? when your in town and stuff thats different. mind you, your all in the USA so poeple probly see it differently. mind you in my barely 200 poeple town poeple complain about my loud 4 wheeler, do they complain about a loud harley? no they dont. people who complain about loud snowmobiles must just be jelous why else complain?

thats my opnion. PS never buy rumble pack, very very bad quality.

I had excellent luck with my SLP cans for plenty of miles on my 900's.... both the 05 and the 06...

I did break the 05 can.... after hitting a granite wall at about 20 mph... took out a few more parts like pipe/Y/mtr mounts/plastic/steering post/aarms/skis/hood/headlight/etc etc...

I've run the SPG Ultra Q for a while now and have been very happy with the lower noise, compact size and lighter weight.

I'm not a fan of louder exhausts either... go for it on your car or street bike where the worst that will happen is that YOU get the ticket... On a sled... we are all in the crosshairs and loud sleds are the number one complaint/battle-cry from the opposition that IS closing our riding areas down...

I like the sound of nicely tuned loud engine... but I like riding in the areas that I ride in already MORE.

Loud pipes are LAME.

If you like being able to ride "out west" and want to continue, why would you jeopardize those same areas being closed because you want to run a lame, I mean loud, pipe?

Loud pipes lead to closures. I promise not to go to Minnesota and screw up snowmobiling for you. Why would you come at West and screw up riding for us??

Again, Loud pipes are just a target they can focus on. If all our snowmobiles made zero noise tomorrow they would just come up with something else to focus on to get these areas closed and if you believe otherwise you are naive.

Loud pipes, smoke from the machines, oil from the pipes, scaring the animals, damaging trees you run into, damaging tree tops you run over, causing avalanches and costing money for search and rescue, people leaving garbage(I hope no one in here ever does this), etc. Take your pick, if you eliminate one they will focus on the next one.

I grew up in Montana and I have seen many areas first hand that are closed to all motor vehicles. They closed them complaining the cars were permanently scaring the land. After 15 to 20 years of these areas being closed you can barely see a sign that anyone was ever there. Every year they try to close more areas to vehicles, to snowmobiles, etc. They were doing this before snowmobiles ever existed.

Yes if you go screaming through town or through areas filled with people acting like a complete idiot you are doing a lot of harm, but if your snowmobile was dead silent the people who share the trails with us would still complain.

They are a very small group with a very loud voice. The people who want the areas closed have backers in CA and other states with a lot of money.

If you really want to do some good rather than just whining about areas being closed and pointing the finger of blame. Sign up with your local club. Sign up with SAWS http://www.snowmobile-alliance.org/, donate if you can. Get off your butt and do something to help.

Mountain Horse, I have heard good things about the SPG cans. Do you know anywhere there is a sound file so I can listed to one?

I think vibration of the machine was the killer of the SLP cans, they are not braced as well as others out there. If your machine ran smoother than other 900's or you got your clutch properly balanced that might explain why some people have had good luck with them. I actually preferred the sound of the first SLP can. I didn't find out about balancing the clutch to smooth out the machine till after having multiple failures on the SLP can.
I bought my 900 new so I have had it a while and there were not a lot of people out there who could recommend a good quiet pipe at the time.

Spending 200 -300 at a time to experiment is a little beyond what most of us can afford and having your machine be constantly down because of cracked pipes was not practical either. At least two of the SLP cans caught fire inside because of the cracks letting air in.

Here is a vid of mine with the mbrp. It is loud when going wfo. In vid isn't more then 1/2 to 3/4 throttle. I am running a dynoport full exhaust now with the big volume can which they say +5 to 6 db whereas the big core barker can says + 10 to 12 db. Never had any problems with the mbrp or dynoport cans.

Also check out my channel there are some of our races on there. Although they are of when my engine was out for warranty work so no 900 in action.

just remember that dBs are on a logarithmic scale...10bB louder=ouch! Also, 8 hours on a stock snowmobile at 90-96dB will lead to permanent hearing loss. Throw on a set of stingers and go to over 100dB and that goes down to the 1-2hrs before hearing loss. As a frame of reference a baby screaming at full volume is about 104dB next to your ear (hence we deal with them), and a single shot from an AK-47 is instant hearing loss at 140dB. Perhaps for your own good you can appreciate why the quieter can is fine?
