Wanting a Carbon Fiber Helmet - Suggestions?

I just weighed my 2009 Thor Force Carbon Fiber helmet.. size XL made in Korea.

1510 grams made 3 years ago, 3.33 lbs

not too much heavier than the latest 509.

I weighed it with the visor on and a quick strap velcro sticky on one side and the corresponding plastic clip on piece stuck onto the opposite side.

Officially:) by my measurements it looks like this: 1510g size xl Thor including the extra quickstrap mounting hardware -1240g 509 (not sure of the size) = a 270 gram difference. That makes the Thor .6 lbs heavier

Now if the above posted weight is correct and a Large size 509 is 3 lbs... and an XL is a little bit more... The old school Thor and the new 509 in an XL size are very likely within 1/4 lb.

Food for thought.

And I think the 509 is a very nice Helmet for the record!

Went to the snow show yesterday with no intentions of buying a helmet.....until I picked up the mf lid. Knew I just cost myself 250 bucks haha. But talked myself out of it knowing I need some new boots. Now today sitting at home kicking myself for not snatching it up, show special of $220. Does the little carrying case/bag thingy come with it normally, was a nice looking little bag? And the camera mount adapters? Is there a sizing chart somewhere online, unfortunately I didn't try one on and now I have to order one haha.:pout:

You should have pulled the trigger! Just got mine last week and all i got to say is wow!:bounce: It's so much lighter than my HJC. I can't wait to get out on the snow and try it.

exchanged it

you know though when i picked up the dominator at haydays it felt lighter than this one? no way to tell till i find a scale. still lighter than my old one by far.
i kinda think it might be a carryover before the new weight??? maby?

Dug this thread up from the past.

What is new and hot in light weight? I just bought a Fly F2 and then found this thread!!!!

Anyone have an FXR Blade Super Lite?

My next carbon fibre helmet will be an airoh but I have two Fox V3 helmets in carbon fibre and they are sweet no bad things to say about them.

Does anyone have the head shape spec on these helmets?

I currently own ( for moto ) and both of these fit me fantastically.
Icon Variant Medium = Long Oval
Arai VX PRO 3 Medium = Intermediate Oval

I was wanting to get a new carbon helmet with a breath box for snowmobiling. I tried the Fly Carbon F2 Snow in medium. Its WAY WAY to tight in the front and back for my narrow head. It must be more of a Round/earth shaped design.

I wish manufactures would list the shape. By measurements I'm fine but if i go up to a large FLY Carbon F2 there will be big gaps on the side of my head.

It gets pretty annoying there is not much selection here, so I have to order online and send back and it gets old.

Helmets brands that do not fit me
661,
Shoei,
HJC
FLY F2 apparently.. such a bummer because its a sharp looking lid.

To anyone wondering "What the hell is this guy talking about"

Go here and it explains it lol scroll down to the diagrams http://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle-helmet-guide

This thread is old, but just wanted to comment. This is a good thread, some objective responses.

Some of the guys in the beginning were praising the Fly helmets.

I will start by saying I have the Fly MX, its the top of the line Fly carbon. It light and oooooohhh my it is so comfortable. I had to go through some cheek pad sizes, but its comfy and material inside is softer than a cloth diaper. Would I buy another, I don't know.

Down side... I hope other people are having better luck. I received the helmet as a gift from my wife. The second ride the trim started coming off. The company she ordered from said WPS would not warranty it. Thank goodness a awesome dealer from this website stepped up and got me a new helmet from WPS.

I have an estimated 10-15 rides on the second helmet and again the trim is coming off again. I am very careful with the helmet. its very disappointing that a high end helmet falls apart like that. I could see one of the helmets but now that is the second one.

I really do love the helmet, but don't know if I could buy a second one.

Having sold my fair share of helmets to the general public, I enjoy the responses on this thread.

I've sold pretty much every helmet being talked about, including others not mentioned.
The need for a lightweight helmet, for me is paramount. I dislocated my neck 15 years ago and was told I'd never wear a helmet again. So my quest for the lightest helmet has been ongoing since that time.

However....

My time in dealer meetings, talking to reps, and experience has shown me that a proper fitting helmet is worth more than a lightweight helmet any day of the week. And despite first impressions, the most comfortable helmet, when it is new and sitting on the shelf, is not the helmet for you. Not until you have broken it in, should it be comfortable.
Now that's not to say that you should be in agony, no no no, but on a scale of 1 to 13, a 10 is what I shoot for. (I never used a scale of 1 to 10, call it a quirk)

KTMDirtFace is very on point with the shape of helmets. Well versed and well said. And with that said, some people(a lot actually) fit HJC's well, some fit ZOX lids well, in other words, mainstream lids are in no way "cheap", they only have lower cost alternatives to their higher end lids. But rest assured, the much of the same technology goes into each price range.

I LOVE my Fly V2 HMK lid. Super comfy! However after a full day of wearing it, I develop a headache and my neck is terribly stiff.
So now I wear it in the summertime. I find that I have my helmet off, as much as I have it on when playing and working with the Rzr.

I also have a 661 lid that I also love. Composite lid, lightweight, and doesn't give me headaches when wearing for a long time. Not as comfortable as my other kids, but works well and I use it often enough.

I also have an Airoh Aviator from the last place I worked at. International Motorsports in Delta, BC used to bring them in, it is possible that they still import them from the UK. Worth a shot. I love this helmet, the most comfortable lid I own. And the 2nd lightest I own. If you can find a deal, and it fits your head, I highly recommend.

And the last one I own, that I don't wear any longer, is my M2R Revelation. Originally handmade in California, there was a small run made at 1000grams. Unfortunately this was about 10 years ago. The helmet has run it's course and sits in retirement on a shelf.

I have a Giro, and Fox MTB lids, but only wear them on the pedals. I have enough selection that keeps me from trying my MTB lids sledding, although many friends tell me to do so.

Something to take into account, is that many helmet manufacturers utilize the same shells. The difference is in the vents, mouthpiece, and most importantly, the liner.

In closing, the price, nor the weight of a helmet is the end all be all. The way it fits your head does. How it sits on your forehead, how much space near the temples, and when you shake the helmet, that is moves only the skin, and not rotate on your head(if that makes sense)

I started wearing a carbon fiber Giro full face bicycle helmet. So light and comfortable you can barely feel it's there. It's not dot approved but imo it offers plenty of protection. Afterall it's designed for those crazy mtn bikers that fly down the mountain in the dirt. It's extremely vented so it's a little chilly on the trail in but a good balaclava takes care of that.
http://www.giro.com/us_en/remedy-cf-5520.html and you can find them for about half that price

Yep I second this, I've upended my a*# big time mountain biking and it saved my head...knocked myself clean out by landing head first into a pile of rocks so yes the giro is an awesome helmet for sledding too.
I use my balaclava early season but come spring it's awesome, big venting for when your digging friends out or for heavy riding in the trees...puff puff.
One thing I find with the giro or other mnt bike helmets is the superb vision from a bigger opening.

That seems to me a very strange endorsement.

I see this as analogous to, I always wear Trojan condoms and only have 1 kid.

Perhaps you did not intend for that to come across as a condemnation of the helmet but that is how I interpreted it.

Bumping up an old (great) thread as I do research for a new helmet. My HJC carbon fiber has been flawless, but after 7 seasons of snow and dirt, it's showing age.

I have one question.... anybody know if any of these helmets are made in the USA? :usa2:

I have both the Skidoo (Lazer) XP-R2 & 509 Altitude Carbon. They're both great.

All carbon everything.

Got to try on a FXR Blade Carbon MTN. helmet on the other day. Was very comfortable and light. Maybe my next helmet. Fred

I pulled the wind sock out of my broken BRP Carbon Light helmet and modified it into my new Klim F4 helmet ...fits amazing
