V10 fuel mileage

K

knee deep in it

Well-known member
1999 F250 3/4 ton extended cab witht he V10 Triton. The seller claims he is getting 23 mpg highway if you keep it at speed limit.

Is this possible?

What kind of fuel mileage could a guy get in the city?

One of our shop trucks thats in SW MT gets about 12 mpg. THats with a topper and full of tools, about 3500 extra pds. And its also going up and down the road that goes up to a ski resort and then back down to the town, about 2,000 feet in elevation. We are very happy with that mileage. It might squeeze 1 more mpg down the highway. A V10 will never see 20 mpg. not even with a sail on the damn thing. His nose didn't get bigger when he told you that, did it?

If you have to ask about gas mileage on a V10 you should not be looking at it. I have a heavy foot and we have a number of v10 f-350 4x4 2000-2003 and I average about 8-10 mpg. If you go easy you can get 12 mpg.

He's lying his arse off. I have a 99 and have owned it since 99. It may get 23 for the length of a steep hill your going down, maybe. I can get 14 empty keeping speeds down to 55 and never passing, even with a few hills but I don't see even 16 possible in somplace as flat as Kansas. And as soon as you speed up to say 60, forget it. I have a heavy foot and mine now has a CAI, Headers, 4' exhaust, and a tune and none of it helped mileage. I still get 9 around town and 7 towing my 40' 5th wheel.

2010 crewcab shortbed, f-350, v-10, 4.30 gears, 35.5 inch tall tires....14.2 miles per gallon, hand calculated, 240 mile trip....half at 65 mph and half at 50-55 mph.........different trip, loaded with hunting gear, two people, and pulling a two place open sled trailer with one atv on it.....9.5 mpg at 65 to 70 mph.....this is all in utah with altitudes of 5 to 9 k, frequent hills....but anything over 15 mpg?, no i don't think so....and mostly in the 10-12 mpg area and i'm not a lead foot either....:D......on the other hand, the v-10 seems to be a very reliable engine/transmission....oil changes and regular maintenance is much less than a diesel (and i've owned them all, as i get a new one each year)....not quite the laid-back towing power of the diesel, but still very acceptable....and i don't have to deal with the new emmission problems of the newer diesels, which hate idle time (tends to plug the emmisson stuff).....and my truck does see some idle time in cold weather.....

F350 V10 with the newer 3valve drw 2wd bringing it home it got 12 at 70mph. Once we loaded it up going over the scales 12,500 we get 9mpg.

I had a 2000 and never got above 13. Didn't seem to matter if you drove it 30 or 80 uphill or down hill it got 13.

Only thing I'd keep an eye on with a pre- '03 is spark plugs. The early modular heads only have 4 threads in the aluminum head to hold in the spark plugs. Sometimes they work loose and then launch the plug out of the head ruining the threads. The heads can be repaired, but it can be avoided by checking the plugs every 25,000 miles or so. FWIW there are a lot of modded, forced induted modular motors running 4 thread heads making over 700 HP so if the plugs don't work loose they will never be a problem.

Go buy one heat range colder spark plug and close the gap an extra 8 thou. It will improve mileage and power. Get a fuel system flush, change the fuel filter, keep a clean air filter in it, put the factory size tires on as indicated on the vin tag on the inside of the drivers door, make sure cats and mufflers are not collapsed inside or buy a 1990 mazda b2200.

We've had two in two different vans and see 12-15mpg, average around 13. They are bulletproof engines (1st one had 220k+ on stock engine and tranny when my brother wrecked it) and pretty darn snappy, but not the best for mileage.

Definatly Bulletproof and very cheap to maintain. Decent power, and a real workhorse. I have had three and the best milage I have seen was 16 once and I still have trouble believing it. Most of the time I see 12. I use the one I have now for plowing snow and it works great for that and hauling my camper. You will spend a lot less maintaining it so its worth the extra $$ for fuel.......My .O2

I drive a 2005, F-250, V10 with the 4.10 rear end.
Going downhill with a tail wind I dont' think I have ever seen 15mpg.

12-13 is about normal driving.
8-9 with a heavy trailer.

This truck will pull ANYTHING I have ever attached to it, but gas mileage is not one of it's strong suits.

I as well have a 99 f250 4x4 with the v10 engine. Also with the 4.30 gear and have never got better than 16mpg. Usually around 13-14 on the highway. Pulled a 30ft double slide trailer from calgary to golden twice and both time have been 7-8 mpg. Great truck though. Looking for a f150 4x4. Anyone interested in trading?

Dad has an 06 f350 6.0 psd with 4:30 gears and gets 10-12mpg loaded or unloaded. Not a v10 but something to reference. I know the lighter 250/350 with 3:73 gears get better but I doubt they see anymore than 16mpg.

it's possible

well if it's on a trailer getting pulled down the road idling, im sure he could pull in the 20's with a V10.

they do good, except, the one i had and my neighbors blew up, mine was around 180k, no idea what milege his was at, but it was a year later roughly. those were dodges though, 2 of the guys i work with have the ford V10's and seem to be holding up excellent. they average around 11.5, with a fairly heavy foot.

i have an 8.1L v8 though, and i average around 13 to 14 being very nice, but usually it's 12.5 to 13.4 average empty and 8 to 10 depending how heavy the gooseneck is loaded. but a BB V8 or a V10 are going to get crummy MPG's. now my diesel get way better, but the power and actually not too bad fuel milege of the big gassers for the price is very nice.
