Utah guys--what do you tow with?

I'm seriously contemplating picking up a Chevy Duramax Diesel from Larry H Miller Chevrolet for towing purposes.

Should I consider a Ford or Dodge? Any experiences here?

I don't know why, but I've always been kind of a Chevy guy when it comes to trucks...and 660 lb-ft is sick!

Duramax 6.6L V8 Turbo-Diesel Engine
Duramax 6.6L V8 Turbo-Diesel Engine

The available Duramax Diesel 6.6L V8 Turbo-Diesel engine features:

* 365 horsepower @ 3200 rpm
* 660 lb.-ft. of torque @ 1600 rpm
* Class-leading diesel horsepower and overall torque(1)
* Mated to Allison six-speed automatic transmission
* B5 biodiesel compatibility
* Glow plugs that warm up quickly — by efficiently converting electricity into heat — which helps when starting the truck in low temperatures
* Common rail fuel injection, a direct-injection system, that utilizes advanced electronics and pilot injection to optimize fuel delivery and help reduce emissions and combustion noise
* A variable-geometry "smart" turbocharger, located in the valley between the cylinder heads for a compact design, features computer-controlled turbine vanes and an air-to-air intercooler
* A Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) that helps meet strict diesel emissions standards
* The oil cooler keeps the oil temperature more consistent over the entire operating range
* Cast-aluminum cylinder heads that feature sintered-steel valve-seat inserts and a four-valve design to help reduce emissions and maximize power

2007 Dodge Mega Cab 2500 HD 5.9L Cummings
I would have to say the biggest cab avaible out there.
I like it but the other two are not bad. Dodge, GMC/Chevy or Ford you could debate all day.
Get what suits you.

I've been all Ford. But if I were to buy one today, I would go Duramax for sure.
Funny you ask, mine is in the shop as we speek.hahaha:rolleyes:

If I was to upgrade from my old busted A$$ truck I would get a Duramax in a heart beat.

I also work on them day in and day out so I might be a little biased.

What ever you get you will be happy.

If you can find any '08 D-maxs that would be my pick. Great truck & HUGE rebates. Not much of any rebate $ on '09s.

Drive all 3 and pick which one you like...and then refer to my first sentence. :D

The worse truck I ever owned for towing (newer Generation diesels anyhow), was my 04' Chevrolet Duramax.
Now before you get all excited hear me out. I have owned a ton of trucks. Never been a Chevy fan much, but bought this because the salesman was my customer.
Now the truck was a shortbed, with the torsion bars fully cranked up. So with the tongue weight of a trailer on it, the front was real light. The front bounced so bad, that the front tires would literally come off the ground! Then trying to drive in four wheel drive, the front would search like there is no tomorrow. However, the engine and trans were fantastic. Liked them both alot. If I was to do it again for towing, I would get a long bed, and if I wanted it lifted a little, I would spend to money on a lift and not crank the bars. I have friends with these trucks and neither do what mine did. One is a long bed, and the other has a lift with airbags, both pull great. Just fyi.

Now I own quite a few diesel trucks, and just bought a new Ford. Two of my trucks are duallys, both Dodge Cummins, and both good trucks, that will pull a crap load of weight. But I like this new Ford. With some minor modifications, its like driving a sports car. With my 29' Sled trailer behind it dont get moved around. It looks good, rides good, and they are giving them away right now.
Anyhow, good luck with your choice. If you get into the Ogden area north, let me know and I will give you a ride. Nothing like 500+hp and 1100ft lbs to the rear wheels out of a stock truck with a programmer.....:beer;

That's what I'm looking at...about $10k off sticker.

I'm actually surprised people aren't more adamant about this (the "get what you like" attitude). My buddies that are into Chevy's are borderline obsessive about them! lol

Great info!

Thanks!

I assume the programmer voids the warranty?

Um ya....I did ask my dealer when I bought it what they thought. They told me as long as the problem was not noticable caused by the programmer, that they would still warranty it. I hope to not find out.

Figure on getting rid of this!!

JSCC are you running Spartans stuff?

trucks

I am 1/3 owner of a dealership and can drive any model, and I believe all three are nice. For me the most bang for the buck is the dodge mega cab, great motor, solid truck, takes a big lift (6 inch) better than any. Pulls very good even with a lift. Most my complaints come from the new ford, even though most like the truck they are getting horrible mileage and been in the shop alot. I tell my customers to make sure they 1. buy what they can afford 2. buy whats feels good to them because no matter what you buy it is alot of money so you better like it.

I love my 07 mega cab, my only complaint is the short bed,,,,I pull a 29' enclosed with 6 sleds and it does a great job,,, no other truck rides like the chev but, they all cost alot of money,and i agree drive em all and its your own opinion that matters... Good luck

'03 Duramax LT crew with bullydog, piped, and airbags. I freakin love my truck. It tows excellent with decent mileage, 12-15 and 20-22 on the freeway. I have the torsion bars cranked up to level it out a bit cause of the bags, so it is a little bouncy when not towing, but stable while towing.
Ridiculous torgueand power, exceptional comfort and style, plus great mileage.

I would buy used.. The market is FLOODED with used diesels for next to nothing.. I would try and go 07 or older (Pre-particulate filter).. better gas mileage. lalala.. but what do i know?

My 05 has been great, but if you go used the 04.5 - 05 LLY has a overheat issue that Chevy's hasn't fixed. They've thrown a couple reflashes and newer air box at it with reduced mileage the only result. I've left mine stock and get 17 around town 19 highway and 12-14 pulling either my 27' 5th wheel or my 23' enclosed. I would look for an 06 - 07.

I pull with a new Tundra. Have a 27' enclosed 3 place all aluminum that comes over Parley's at 85 and rolls beautifully. 11.4 mpg towing cross country loaded. (the trailer) 17 overall. Used to have a Ford 3/4 and a Mega Cab 3/4. Like the Tundra best. the Mega Cab did sleep well in that back seat. huge!
