Utah Avalanche Center News… the good… the bad… the downright ugly!

First off I’d like to thank everyone who attended the two movie fundraisers this past month. Both movie nights- one at the Edge Motorsports the other at Brewvies Cinema- were well attended and the combined events raised over $2000.00 for the Friends of the Utah Avalanche Center. A big thanks goes out to the amazing athletes of both Boondockers and Thunderstruck who just kill it in front of the cameras. In addition, all the hard work and dedication from the Rocky Mountain Sledders is nothing short of amazing. Finally, I’d like to thank Brewvies Cinema, The Edge Motorsports, The Utah Snowmobile Association, Rob Smith and National City Mortgage, Rocky Mountain Snowmobile of Orem, Black Diamond Products, Net Sleds and Klim for their generous donations and support.

For the past ten years the UAC and snowmobile community have worked closely together and the fruits of our cooperative labor are obvious- more riders are avy savvy, they’re wearing the right avalanche safety gear and taking advantage or our outreach… that’s the good news. Now the bad news. Last spring two of our Beacon Basin’s, one at Noblett’s and the other at the top of Fairview Canyon, were vandalized and several beacons were stolen.

I bring this to everyone’s attention not as an angry rant, though I almost went ballistic when we discovered this, but more as a matter of public safety. The ugly news is- the beacons that were stolen are factory rejects and don’t work properly… they can only transmit a signal and don’t receive. So, if you hear of someone who got a screamin’ deal on a BCA Tracker recently, you might wanna have them check the functionality of their beacon. Better yet, have them contact me and maybe we can get our gear back so we can continue to provide riders with these valuable resources that save lives. If you have any leads I can be reached at 801-231-2170 or craig@utahavalanchecenter.org

Good work Craig Ill keep my ears open. Sorry there are always a few bad apples, but for the most part I think true sledders are great people!

I cannot believe people!! Craig I have learned alot from you over the years, I have been to a few of your talks over the years and I went up on Monte with you last year with Weber County SAR, I want to thank you for all that you do to help keep us safe, I check the avy forecast before every ride.

I have a BCA tracker that I will donate, the on/off switch no longer works, it is stuck in the on position, but it is yours if you can use it. I am replacing it with a pieps DSP

good Lord, Craig. some folks amaze me. But most amaze me in a good way. Dunatic is one. Nice gesture, Chris. Good idea for sure. If we look I bet we can find a couple old ones to replace the stole ones. sad, I hope the theives lives don't depend on those stolen units someday... or anyone elses for that matter. sucks. :(

Keep up the great work Craig. we appreciate ALL that you do.

Doug

Sorry to hear about the theft. Very good idea to post hear. Good chance that the thieves were just vandals not sledders. We should all keep our eyes open on KSL. Just might see them pop up there for sale.;)

Unbelievably bad karma for someone!!! Craig....your efforts on our behalf are truly appreciated. Can you give us an idea how many beacons were lost and how many you need to replace them?

when craig told me about this up to brewvies, i just could not believe it! what the he11 is the matter with some people!!!!!

good thought tho, dunner. i too hope to have a new beacon in the next couple of weeks. if so, id be glad to donate my old SOS.

Thanks for the support and interest in this topic along with all the kind words. You’re an awesome group and we appreciate everything you do for the UAC. I suspect this was a random act of vandalism, not something any sledder was involved with. A total of nine beacons walked. However, I’m working with BCA to get the facility replaced and up and running for this season. I appreciate the individual offers you have made to donate old beacons, but I don’t know how compatible those are with this new system. If we can use ‘em… I’ll get in touch. The biggest hurdle for us is the fact that budgets are extremely tight this year. In any case, perhaps in some amazing Karmic twist this will all pan out.

Beacons..

Craig,
I too appreciate all your efforts, and have learned a ton on avy's these past couple of years.

I know funds are tight for everyone this year...especially around the holidays, but you can count on my $20. Just let me know where to send it. If necessary, maybe we could have an auction to try and raise some more funds. Thanks for all you do craig.
Steve

Since there is no snow I think another Get Together/Fund Raiser is in order. Besides look how much money we are saving on fuel. Need a way to get together with all these SW A-holes (oops) I mean friends anyway.:)

Maybe have an Avy Class with lunch and a Raffle. No tickets for BossRev though.

i think a avy class/raffle would be awesome. I am trying to get my mom to get me a beacon and stuff for this season. I dont want to ride without one. If you guys do a get together i wanna attend for sure. Keep me posted

I could use a avy freshener for sure.

Ron, Winning is easy when it comes to raffles and presidential elections.

All you have to do is open up that pocket book or in Hatcher's case a purse.
And spend some money. Odds are you'll win!;)

Ha Ha, My pockets were wide open at Brewvies. We just need to stay for the entire raffle.

Sorry for the lack of response on my end of things… got my head buried in some other avalanche projects and haven’t checked this thread in a few. Again thanks everyone for the follow up on this.
I’m always up for suggestions on ways to help you guys out and to raise much needed funds for the Avy Center. So, with that in mind. Do we want to do just a basic avy awareness class one night someplace or do you want me to put together a more hands on Level 1 type class which would be more like a Friday night talk, Saturday and Sunday field day? Let me know and I can start working on logistics.
You can always email me at craig@utahavalanchecenter.org with ideas.

I want you to do a level 1 class Craig, I have been to your training and I want everyone on here to do it! I am on here begging everyone to commit to this!! please take the time to come to it, I promise it is worth your time. Craig you plan it and I promise to be there, and I will bring everyone I know on here to it.

I'm for the big life saver class (level one). After seeing the ice storm in the Uintas last weekend I'm scared to death and would like to learn as much as I can. Maybe a Scared Straight Class before it all starts. Honestly I fear for my own safety and I hate to hear of an Avy that claimed a life of maybe someone I know. Let's get this thing put together. It's a good time for safety awareness with the Animal family fundraiser going down. Everybody needs to go home safe.:)

I would be to a Level I class......lets do it at Sunridge, or Bear River. I will volunteer my friends cabins :D:D:D
