Utah Avalanche Center News… the good… the bad… the downright ugly!
First off I’d like to thank everyone who attended the two movie fundraisers this past month. Both movie nights- one at the Edge Motorsports the other at Brewvies Cinema- were well attended and the combined events raised over $2000.00 for the Friends of the Utah Avalanche Center. A big thanks goes out to the amazing athletes of both Boondockers and Thunderstruck who just kill it in front of the cameras. In addition, all the hard work and dedication from the Rocky Mountain Sledders is nothing short of amazing. Finally, I’d like to thank Brewvies Cinema, The Edge Motorsports, The Utah Snowmobile Association, Rob Smith and National City Mortgage, Rocky Mountain Snowmobile of Orem, Black Diamond Products, Net Sleds and Klim for their generous donations and support.
For the past ten years the UAC and snowmobile community have worked closely together and the fruits of our cooperative labor are obvious- more riders are avy savvy, they’re wearing the right avalanche safety gear and taking advantage or our outreach… that’s the good news. Now the bad news. Last spring two of our Beacon Basin’s, one at Noblett’s and the other at the top of Fairview Canyon, were vandalized and several beacons were stolen.
I bring this to everyone’s attention not as an angry rant, though I almost went ballistic when we discovered this, but more as a matter of public safety. The ugly news is- the beacons that were stolen are factory rejects and don’t work properly… they can only transmit a signal and don’t receive. So, if you hear of someone who got a screamin’ deal on a BCA Tracker recently, you might wanna have them check the functionality of their beacon. Better yet, have them contact me and maybe we can get our gear back so we can continue to provide riders with these valuable resources that save lives. If you have any leads I can be reached at 801-231-2170 or craig@utahavalanchecenter.org
