us supreme court in the pocket of big oil

So what if that 25 year old kid was supposed to be a 3 or 4 generation fisherman taking over the family business? Now he can't, he must try and find a different job, but will most likely leave the town and will not return. I think that deserves some compensation.[/QUOTE]

this is why i feel the orininal amount should have been paid,not to mention those who would have got the money needed and the exxon woul d have have barely felt the poke....they make that much money in week

Because the government built it! I am not sure the analogy fits, there is a benefit/cost to both. The cost of your examples were not an accident, while the Valdez cost was an accident, it was not planned. I think there is a big difference there.

I get the accident vs on purpose, just trying to point out that there were alot of environmental f ups that we planned.

I think that deserves some compensation.-I get that, but and his family had a chance to see the future for him and push him onto something else. Just seems kinda like rebuilding in flood plains. Maybe I can't explain it good.

so what the kid cant start fishing in another town? at 15 your life is so open to possibilities its ridiculous. You can dream and work to accomplish any goal. To say that your life is completely ruined is just stupid. Why couldnt he come back to the town in a different occupation? The problem with this type of thing is there is too many presumptions and too many what ifs. Money should not be awarded on presumption, but on actual evidence and fact.

A 60 year old man whos entire life work is fishing there its a different story. That boat MAY have been his retirement checks, etc, and compensation for him should be very different than a 15 year old kid. But evidence and facts should show how much he actually lost.

exxon should have paid his tution to go to college and become whatever he wanted to be... that would be fair compensation...

I think this boils down to an emotional feeling vs actual evidence. None of us have all the facts in the case (even using wiki which anybody can add whatever they want to) so its really impossible to apply judgement.

Do you buy any chance have relatives or ties with anyone involved in the settlement?

you are so right,yes it is not the same for the 15 yr old and the guy who is knocking on retirements door....but now the settlement does not even give the kid enough for college

sorry ruffy...the valdez oil spill was no accident...exxon knew the captain was a drunk...he had been in trouble with alcohol on the job before...that is negligence.........and is why exxon should pay the full amount in punitive damages the first court awarded........

Well, you are splitting hairs. How about we say it was an accident waiting to happen?

I guess I meant that it was not expected (creating a huge environmental catastrophe). I am sure it was not in there policies and procedures to spill all of there oil...;)

You are so right ruffy..but hazelwood was lucky alaskans didnt string his *** to a tree at the time...and watching this front and center all these years...exxon has ignored their duty at every turn...only the goverments threats has made them do what they have done....this ones for you ruffy:beer;

The only thing any of us can do...ignore it..or get sick of what are elected officials have done with our home....our country needs commerce..but we also need mother nature..I doubt anyone has ever considered how well exxon made out on that spill..I bet the tax writeoffs were substantial....some how we the people have to work this out..from companies who blatenly harm our eco systems , to greenies who foolishly cut our own nose off to spite our face..We have to come to a middle ground that allows our bounties to be harvested while protecting out world...I dont have the answers..but I think a good start is for the us to concentrate on job 1...us...if opec wants to control oil prices..fine..but raise our prices on what they need from us so it is fair...same with other countries...If they want what we have...pay for it.....stop illegal aleins from coming here..this is our home...tell them to go fix their own place ..stop all the money we give to the rest of the world....now if a country wants our help..fine...fill out an application..what do you have for collateral to secure your loan?..it is time the rest of the world starts repaying us for what we do for them..........as for the greenies...well time to put up or shut up...put down those car keys, turn off that electric, those cell phones,get your *** out to the country and start living off the land..that is what you want the rest of us to do..so you lead by example..if we like it we will join you...but lead or shut the **** up....any one else got any ideas?
