poker runs in boating, is you have like five stops, and the best hand wins, and if there is a tie then how fast you get there comes into play for the tie breaker.

I've helped run quite a few poker runs and would be willing to help with this one as well. In Montana "gambling" is allowed so you win money back...usually pays 7-10 places. Back in Montana here is how we usually run them:
Start by registering at a bar/lodge of some sort with enough space for the turnout...usually bars are more than willing because they also get the business of 150+ people coming through getting drinks/food/etc. Plus folks usually stop back for future business if they were treated right. Usually registration is from 8-10 a.m. You purchase as many "hands" for $10 (or any price) as you want. You have 5 "checkpoints" where you draw one card at each until you have a poker hand. Usually the first and last hand is at the bar. The other three checkpoints are spread out on a chosen route...usually 30-50 miles round trip. You need 2-3 volunteers (this is where the snowmobile club helps) at each "checkpoint" with a bag of cards/notebook/campfire/etc. You must have your hand turned back into the bar by a certain time which is uaully 4 or 5 p.m. Usually there is a "sweeping crew" that runs the designated route to ensure everybody that took the trail is safe and no stragglers are behind. Back at the bar the winning hands are given their money, there is a 50/50 drawing (not legal in Utah?), and raffle prizes are given.
Some of the logistical things that need to be thought of are parking (both at the bar and mountain), how many people are expected, advertising (back in MT a beer distributor distributes the posters to all the bars...the main gossip trails), volunteers, and setup of trail. If the more "experienced" riders want to draw a hand but not ride the route they can just draw all 5 at the bar. I also think the USFS must issue a use permit and the snowmobile club usually carries insurance I believe.
Since we couldn't give money we would have to basically pre-purchase the prices but that could be difficult without knowing the approximate turnout. I know lot's of folks will chime in with ideas.
That is kind of the quick and dirty of it. I know I missed a ton but hope that gives some ideas and gets people thinking. Also it looks like the Snow Gods are answering our prayers here in Utah today.![]()
This all sounds great. Of course we would rely on donations for the prizes and raffle items. I was thinking 7 cards but 5 works also. We could start at the lot with everyone preregistering so all they need to do is show up and get a ticket or something to show they have paid. When it is over we could all meet somewhere for either a prearranged dinner that is paid with the registration or you fend for yourself.
This sounds fun! I would like to join in on the poker run! Feb. 16th is the Snowest ride. This might conflict.
Wow... this is awesome!!!
FYI- I'm teaching two avy classes in Feb and will be tied up Feb. 8-9 and Feb. 23rd. Hopefully this will fly on the 16th? March 2nd is another option.
Thanks for all the support.
Happy Thanksgiving to all of you and your families.
Cheers.

Who ever ends up in charge of this just let me know. Tri-city would be more than happy to support an event like this. Thanks

Looks like we may have to put this on hold. I am going to make it happen next year but just can't seem to pull things together this year.
