Twist Throttle

Year and a half ago I sprained my "throttle" thumb really bad 4 wheeling...well, just re-sprained it again sledding and it hurts like he** and takes forever to heal. Has anyone put a twist throttle on a sled? Thought about a lefty but, seems like we had issues finding one that works on my Renegade.

If you dont stand up and only ride trails, you might be ok. BUT, if you start pulling and yanking around your bars, (like we do mountain riding) you will twist the gas on when you dont want it. Get ya a thumb brace.

The other problem with a twist grip is freezing.
If you get some moisture in there you may end up not being able to shut it down.

Would a lefty throttle work??

I am trying to find a twist throttle for my sled right now if I find something I will let you know. Anybody that think you can't mtn. ride with one is wrong. I ride a street bike and a dirt bike. I am all over that thing and you have way more control of the throttle. On my street bike I can clutch it up at over 100mph into a wheeling and that pulls on your hand a ton and I still can control it just fine.

Oh I agree a twist throttle is great. I am just wondering how it would be in the cold. If moisure were to get in between the throttle and the bar, would/could ice build up and possible freezing of the throttle be a problem??

I googled twist throttle and let me tell you, definitely a lot of opinions about these on sleds. I found this thing at cabelas that might work called handy throttle atv kit. Not sure about the lefty yet, still researching. A thumb brace is great idea except it doesn't work well enough, still pain. I even tried the "thumb thing" from ru outside and would have to wear like XXXXL gloves over it. Yes, we do ride off trail and that is probably what I would think would be hardest with a twist; going through trees, climbing, etc. Keep the ideas coming...

on a dirt bike you have a twist throttle. jumping and all kinds of crap. I would do it and make sure you have hand gaurds, which if you have your bars raised up you should have anyways. I dont see why it wont work. The only potential problem I can see is freezing up. If you put a handwarmer on it, it shouldnt be a problem.

I had an old Poo 650 the throttle is alot stiffern then the new ones. But after several days in a row of riding my thum would get tired. So I twisted the trottle over and used my pointy and birdy fingers to pull it. Worked good took some time to get use to it but it worked.

As for twist throttle. I ride dirt bikes and road bikes also. Yes you do pull on the bars but nothing like you do with a sled on a side carve. I know "I" could not mountain ride like I do now with a twist. Carving even with "countersteer":D would be very difficault to do.

Could you remove the thumb throttle and put a gold finger on it??
you could twist it around so you can use your finger(s) to operate the throttle instead of your thumb.

We love the twist throttle

Maybe we could help you figure out how to get one on there. The guys that ride hawks loooove the twist throttle and never have a problem with it.
These guys ride all over the place in and out of the trees off cliffs, on the trails, across creeks, wherever and whenever and never have a problem.
If you send us an pm maybe we can give you some pointers, granted we'd love to have you just jump and try a hawk, but getting you help with the twist throttle on your regular sled shouldn't be to hard.

i know most manufacter's arn't the smarted peanut in the turd, but don't you think there is a reason that they don't put twist throttles on sleds?

also motorcycle guys, learn to adapt!

What about hand warmers? wouldnt that keep it from freezing?

Maybe, hard to say. I'm sure it would work most of the time but in the real deep pow, if nothing else, it might pack up with snow and not want to turn very nice. I've been riding dirt bikes for 20 some odd years so I'm well used to a twist throttle, just haven't used one much in the snow! :D

Very simply put most sleds are designed by and for people who ride quads. It's the similar market. So they are use to using and designing that type of thumb throttle. Most of these makers also do quads. Some do bikes but most do quads.

You might want to know what the fug you are talking about before you try to offer advise:mad:.... Sled were around long before ATV's......

granted we'd love to have you just jump and try a hawk

I wonder if there will ever be a chance of you not trying to push the hawk on everyone....

I do believe the hawk looks cool and has its place. I doubt anyone wants to here try a hawk when asking a simple question regarding their sled..

Edit - sorry to hyjack.... In regards to your question, my biggest concern would be the throttle freezing, but i also think that could be avoided with hand warmers and hand guards..... Let us know how it works and if you have any affects when mountain riding.

I hate to say it I don't think I'm pushing the hawk.
O.k. my timing might be off, but you get my point, it's basically designed by the same guys. geeez
I just said that we use them all over the world-the twist throttle-and never have any problem.
Could care less what people ride. Just thought I'd be helpful

Thought about that...maybe. The whole lefty type throttle makes me nervous though. Last year friend of mine with one (lefty) started his sled and it was iced up...sled took off full throttle. Needless to say, it climbed a tree and was totalled. Luckily no one was hurt.

I appreciate all comments and suggestions. My main objective is to figure out a way to ride my sled instead of the couch this winter. I've seen people ride with one arm (with a passenger to run the brake) people that can't walk, etc. ride sleds so there has to be a way I can ride with a thumb that has been bent backwards too many times :)
