Truck Wheels & De-Icer

i may have to line-x my whole truck, i drive the pass every day and after last year i noticed little rust dots all over the sides of my truck. 2000 F250, just got it 2 yrs ago, I tried to get them off but no go, i wonder what it will look like after this year. If i had a new truck i would at least spray it down every trip.

your truck is gay, mine on the other hand has quality standards that far exceed the average truck!!!

I believe the company that made your truck will be going out of business soon as the trucks they built are dragging them down.... Ford on the other hand doesn't need the bailout money.

get them off there!

I have the SAME exact wheels.

They were pitted, shot and gnarled after a month last season and I washed them after every ride. If you want them to look good next summer, dont use them this winter.

my .02c, pull out your stockers and stud them up!

Thanks for the information guys.
I threw a bunch of coin into this rig & want to try to keep the wheels nice.

At this point I am looking at studded 37's for the stock 17'
wheels - or easier yet - driving the wife's Z71 Suburban....:D:beer;

Hey Fordman that is one of the coolest ideas on LINE-X on the wheels. I have 22's on mine and i made sure they were a good brand so the road junk doesnt affect them.

I had the Weld EVO series that came with a 5 year chrome warranty.... Every year I got a new set for free...until Weld went out of business....

Wax, Wax and more Wax

Wax, Wax and more Wax...;)

Keeping the wheels clean during the winter months is an absolute must! Disc brakes typically excelerate the corrosion process as the semi-metalic dust sits on the face of the wheel and when that de-icer comes in contact, it turns into insta-rust, pitting the wheel VERY quickly..

A few quick tips that can really help.

1. Wash the wheels often (after each trip)
2. Use a wax product. This can be very difficult or very easy! I prefer to use Pledge... That's right, good ole fastioned Lemon Pledge, just like mom used to spray on the end tables:D Wash the wheel first and let dry, spray a coat of pledge on the wheel and let it sit for a few minutes and then just wash off.
3. If you use a do-it yourself car wash, turn the setting to wax and spray all the wheels.

Bottom line is, De-icer is tough on metals of any kind and can make your wheels look like crumb real quick! If you have not taken the neccessary steps to protect your wheels and you have corrosive spots starting, this can be removed with a light steel wool.

Good luck and remember

There is only one way to deal with this as I've tried many things... Cleaning them does not work 100%.... it just delays it a bit longer. You can have some wheels you don't care about or.... I had mine sprayed with Line-X. All the wheels and the truck and trailer and all of the suspension parts on the truck have it now. It works.

Teflon wheels still get scratched and black paint or powdercoat doesn't last very long... I've tried it all.

Spraying the wheel is a bit difficult but they all balanced out with a minimum amount of wheel weight added. One wheel has less than an ounce and the heaviest has just over 2 ounces. Those are 37" tires. Mounting the wheel wasn't hard and the line-X handled it.

Sounds like Line-X dealers could make some coin buying up old rusty rims...they look pretty good coated like that.

Question

I have aftermarket wheels for my vehicle and needless to say I'm anticipating putting them on today is march 9th our last snowfall was about a week and a half ago and has been raining ever since. I'm 95% sure we're not getting anymore snow do you think the rain has cleared the deice to the point where it's safe to put the wheels back on???

this sounds crazy but I crawl under my truck and paint everything with used motor oil, drivelines, frame everything, makes changing my rusted out unit bearings and u-joints easier

Wow I forgot about this post....

It has been over FIVE YEARS since the original thread and my truck and wheels are still looking good.
The wheels have never been removed and still shine nice.
There is a tiny amount of pitting around the lug area but for 6 year old Schwab wheels I think they still look good.

The key for me has been hitting the powerwash on the way home consistently every time I come off the mountain, regardless of the conditions.

That has helped the underside of the truck as well as it is not rusty or crusty.

Below are a couple shots of 2 weeks ago, which I hope wasn't my last ride of the season.:mad2:

I drive semi over Stevens Pass 4 to 5 nights every week for the last 12
years. Starting last season they have not been putting down much
de-icer but have gone to salt and a lot of it. I don't think salt will attack
wires and aluminum like the de-icer did but will go after anything that
is steel or iron.

2010 f350 with black powdercoated 22's that get sprayed off and sprinkler under the truck to rinse off deicer as soon as i pul in driveway

Fluid Film

Used for Aircraft Screws and bolts in the airframe, give your rims a good solid coat before the winter, and leave it on there, don't wash it off till spring, will protect your Rims

I use a pressure washer every time I go over the pass, and make sure to really get at the underside of my truck and behind the wheels. Also, every two years I spray rubber undercoat on the entire underside of my truck, everything from the drivelines to the frame. I put used oil in a spray bottle and wipe or spray it over wheels and parts that are exposed. I'm going to check out the fluid film and try some pledge too. It's a 94 with over 200k mi, and hundreds of trips over the pass, still going strong. The stock chrome bumpers rusted through, but everything else is still good.
