Traveling to Canada with a DUI?

Maybe my case was extreme where I wanted to take a gun into canada but I lied to the border agent about being arrested for a dui and they still did a check and denied me. From my expierence they can check anybody they want for any reason. They told me a person just traveling through has a chance to not get check but if you are hunting or taking vehicles and such things across the checks become much more frequent. I thought about just taking the bus up there and my buddies could be waiting on the other side for me I think it would work I can't imagine them being able to check everybody in a bus right????
Anyway it can't hurt to try if your going with the attitude that you are more than likely coming home and if you do I'm not sure which way you would go but I went through sweetgrass on I-15 the nearest bus station is greatfalls montana about a hour and a half drive back and the bus ticket is around $120 to brigham city utah
GOOD LUCK let us know what happens

I think we would be going through Rexford towards Golden.
I appreciate your input and we'll let you know how it go's.

A buddy of mine was trying to get in to go ice fishing up by the North West Angle. The Border Patrol wouldn't let him in cause of a DUI he recently got so the lodge they were staying at came and picked him up on snowmobile.

Hmm.....so people were serious about picking a route through the tree eh?

The sweetgrass border crossing is a major crossing..... They think they are CIA there....I would swing thru Delbonita....check it out on the map. Not much outta the way....I have always had great luck there....small place and most the time they just wave you thru.

So let me see if I have this right; if my buddy butchered 400 chickens and screwed a beagle and is wanted in Nevada for banging horses. He can't get in to Canada? That sucks :face-icon-small-ton

We would actually be heading through the B.C side on 93. I am sure the I-15 route is a joke.
Hopefully this route is not that tough....?

Thistle, you have to be careful giving this bunch directions. Something that complicated (like reading a map) they will never figure out. I would place bets they would be back here in UT up at Mirror lake sledding by me thinking they were in Revy the whole time. All while still trying to figure out how they got so lucky to not have even had to go through a check station! I think you best be for going streight up 1-15 Jed or else I would worry about you guys.

hahaha :D:):D

I was with a bunch of guys on a m/c trip once. For some reason, they only asked certain individuals if that had a record and what for. One guy in the groups sez, Yep, DUI. For him, he had to put up $200 for a "complete record check in both countries". They told him that once they had his record, he may or may not be allowed in. Or, he could turn around and just head back w/o putting up the $200.

Long story short, we left him there, he waited 2 hours and was given the green light to enter and caught up to us that night.

I've been to Canada probably 25 or 30 times over the years. Never been asked if I had a record?

i went into canada with a friend who had a dui, the only way they would let him in was by paying 200$ to get a temporary 1 week citizenship/visa.

dui

i got a dui several years ago in montana, and i have been into and out of canada 8 times or more science i got it.no problems.maybe i"am lucky, because my buddy with a dui got turned around at the border when on a family vacation..call the border ,maybe they can give you a little info..

Just a little of topic but I have a question. with all the strictness and sending people home if they have a DUI whats the penalties in Canada for DUI how do they treat there own? And what if you get in then are pulled over and the run a background check and see you have a DUI?

Fake wall under the sled deck? ;)

We've been denied, here's my advice:

Go through in the middle of day when they are busiest, as opposed to 3am when they don't have shat else to do. If you can get in-between semi's, even better. At least slow down way ahead to make a line behind you, but don't be first in line.

Answer only YES or NO, as little as possible.
Only let the driver talk unless others are asked a question.
If they ask if you have ever been into immigration, say yes-4 months ago.
If they ask if you have ever been into customs, say yes-4 months ago.
When they ask about alcohol/tobacco, tell them exactly what you have, regardless of how much.
Tell them you are staying a week longer than you actually are.
And lastly, be in the rig that's in front of the rig that has the DUI boy in it.

In Canada the penalty for first offence is one year loss of license and usually around a grand fine. Before they let you have your license back they make you take a drunk driving course which can be a weekend long.If you had other tickets on your license at the time of conviction yhey will probally make you take an other coarse to teach you the ways of driving more responsible. In my opinion these coarses are just a cash grab.If you make it across the border and get pulled over and you do have a record for impared driving or any record I don,t think they could even find out unless you have done somthing serious while here..08 is not much to drink so be careful.

Cheers,
Dave

Hey Todd, I have something for ya.........its right here..........................**** OFF!:D

This is all very good information! Thanks again for all your input!

So we have 'that guy' that has been in and out of Canada a few times with no issues. Sounds like he's that man to put behind the wheel to go across the border eh? Will it matter if its my truck and trailer?
