track swap possible at the dealer?

After cats release for 2017 I will be snowchecking an Axys this year. I know a couple years ago cat ran a program where you could trade your track in at the dealer and pay a couple hundred dollars and get a larger paddle track. Does Polaris have anything like this(I know its a long shot but can't hurt to ask.) Actually would like to downgrade tracks. I am going for a 163 LE would really like the 2.6 track, and yes I am stuck on the LE. I know Polaris already has the 2.6 with quick drive in a 163 but really want the titanium/yellow.
 
I want the belt drive 163 2.6 le also so I think I'm going to buy the 155 and put the 163 rails and track with fire & ice ext.

I get parts cheap thru poo so buy the time I sell the 155 track it shouldn't cost me much but my time.
 
There is no "program" but any competent dealer can do that swap. Every dealer is going to be different. Make it part of the negotiation for the sled and it should be no problem. It may cost you some labor time though.


I prefer the 2.6 but also prefer the 2.6 with the quick drive system to the chain case you will be stuck with. You may need to consider gearing and clutching changes too to get the set up right.


I wouldn't trade a color scheme for the hard parts I want on the sled but, everybody has different priorities. The chain case lovers will be here shortly to give their view too, I am sure.

I am not too worried about clutching since I plan on adding a BMP pipe I would have to any way. But you are right about gearing and that didn't even accrue to me I would need to address that.

Well I might have to rethink my snow check. How has everyone liked their 3" tracks from Polaris? I made my decision based on the graph Polaris put up on their different mountain tracks and snow conditions. We ride mostly between Cooke, the Snowies and West Yellowstone. Cooke isn't a problem, but the other 2 I am a little worried about(well mostly West Yellowstone.) I know its a mountain sled with a 3" paddle but if it will be manageable I will just stick with the 163 3". Otherwise I might set back and go with the 155LE, but being 6' and 200-205lbs I think the 163 would fit me a little better.

Unfortunately its just not a simple track swap because the tracks are a different pitch so the drivers will also have to be changed out, but the plus side is that you can go to 8 tooth drivers for 2.6 and still have plenty of track clearance and plus it's inexpensive to change your gearing. You would want to gear between 2.32 and 2.42. You could also just trim your 3" down to a 2.6 or 2.8, actually I would just trim the outer lugs to 2.8 or 2.6 and see how that works.
 
The 3" version is geared too low in my opinion. I would try to get the 2.6 track with the QD. I have a friend who put a 174 X3 on his Axys (chain drive) and he still geared it up. It works better with taller gearing.

I loved my 3" this yr and saw absolutely no downsides when comparing it to the 2.6.

Did you end up having to ride any decent amount of miles on trails?

Like I said I am not worried about riding in Cooke City but in West a person might end up riding quite a bit of trails to get to decent riding.
 
I just got back from riding in Island Park and some off the trails to the good stuff where icy in the am and slush in the pm. We had 1 axys 163 3" in the group and he was having troubles keeping his sled cool in those conditions. I was on my axys 155 2.6" sks with all the wheels removed and did not have a problem with cooling. I road behind him for a while and noticed he's scratchers where not kicking up the snow into the track. It looked like the snow was hitting the bottom of the track because of the taller lugs. He had on the stock scratchers.

I love the 155 2.6, super playful and plenty of float for me at ~240 dressed to ride. The 155 2.6 smoked my buddys modded M1000 162 2.25 powder claw in 2-3 feet of fresh powder. That sled used to be the one to beat in our group. The Axys 155 is super impressive, you wont be disappointed.

This has pretty much sealed the deal. Going down Saturday to see if the dealer and I can reach an understanding on a 155LE.
 
I put 750 miles on my 163x3 this year and I didnt do any trail riding, but we had some hard pack days that were just like trail riding. Never once had the temps get high on me, run 123*-126* down the trail with anything more then 2" of loose snow, if its hard pack with the scratchers down it might get up to 145*.

The 163 axys with the 3" and the factory solid snow flap cools WAY better then my 155 pro with the stock 2.4" track.

I would do anything less then a 3" now, Plus I thought the factory gearing was great for technical riding and the kind of climbs in the trees or drainages where you go from super slow speeds to up a steep climb in an instant. Eric
