Track speeds

The joys of low elevation haha. 100% of my riding is 000-2000feet with 90% of that being around 500-1500 feet and completely different feel of power comparing two stock sleds running one at very low elevation and another at high elevation say 8k+. I'm thinking with a full bmp stage 3 kit and top end fix kit this thing should be a absolute animal. Even on groomed trail and blip of the throttle the skis want to pull up 5-6 inches, mind you I'm only about 155-160lbs but comparing this 2016 pro axys to my 2004 600 go renegade x (last sled) is like a whole new galaxy. Thinking sucking limiter strap up a hole and stiffer rear sprig would help a lot though

I'm almost identical to you...

163 x 2.6 with only a Diamond S can and Carl's clutching (62-42-40 helix currently, 60 gr EPI weights, roller bearing). Apprx 9500 ft, light Utah powder, and I weight about 175 before gear.

On a big, long hill with about a 50 yard run in I'm settling in at only about 8,050 RPM but I'm pulling the same track speeds of 36-38 mph. On the trail if I nail it the RPMs will jump to 8200 but settle back down to 8100 or even 8050. In talking to Carl's today I am going to try switching to the secondary helix setting of 60-40-40 to see if that helps pull up the RPMs a bit. I think/hope there is a little more to be had in this setup.

I am one step ahead of you and already switch to the 60/40 to try and bring the RPM up. It helps but I still find mine a little low in RPM compared to the straight 40 helix. Will try a 120-340 spring with it and see results.

I am glad (and disappointed) many guys are seeing exactly what I am seeing. These sleds feel like they rip but when you are at elevation and in deep snow, the actual track speed is lower than expected. I raced my son through a meadow and up a bowl. He is 40 lbs heavier than me and he was on a 15 Pro that is clutched and geared. I was definitely not catching him very fast.

We also must remember that the AXYS with the 3" tracks and the 2.6" are different animals too. The gearing makes them feel quite different. The 3" gets going quickly and seems to hit a wall while the 2.6" feels fast up top but more sluggish on the bottom.

I am running the TKI on my 163 x 2.6 and gear down 10%. This seems to be nice gearing for my sled but a little more track speed would be good just before turn-out when about to get stuck. No matter the gearing or clutching, if the power is not there it will not be obtainable.

Have you tried different clutch weights Teth-Air? I personally have found just doing a good set of heavy heel weights(epi, MTX, etc) make the biggest difference. I also tried back to back secondary clutch swaps with my pro and axys and I personally felt the 40* straight felt the best on both sleds compared to a 60/42 helix. And I was a firm believer on the steeper helix until I did this back to back test...

Nice - keep me posted on how things develop for you; I'll do the same. How many RPM's did you gain by going to the 60-40? Next time out I plan switching the helix over to 60-40 first with the 60 gr EPI's, then maybe trying the Polaris 62's too (I don't have 62 EPI's). I may also try the stock helix again after that.

Are you running any mods other than the TKI kit? SLP?

Are u guys using carls gold blk secondary spring?

we were at 9-10000ft all week and i had 60 weights and a can everthing else was stock, it still needs more track speed in my opion. the only time i looked at my ground speed was along a road on the way to the truck -59mph was max, the turbos said they seen 80-90mph

At 9-10000 you should have 62's in primary.

Those elevations with Carls Helix in I pull 62 belly busters at 8150-8300 rpm
climb in powder 36-38 mph from ground speed of 10 mph to 25 mph
trail spd recall I've seen 77mph racing back to trail head.

track speed

no, stock springs in both primary & secondary for me so far. In working with Carl's they did mention the gold/black and black/purple both as options if the helix adjustment doesn't do the trick.

I have the same double helix as you. Ive always ran it on the 62-42/40 setting. A couple winters ago I switched it to the 60-40/40 setting just to see what it would do. I wasn't able to do a long pull uphill for track speed, snow wasn't deep enough. The RPM's stayed the same, I didn't gain or lose any rpm's. It will be easier for your sled to pull the 60-40/40, since its pulling less angle, but if you don't get more rpm's, put in a SLP blue pink primary spring, that should definitely get you more r's. You can also read this clutching thread, a lot of people with high elevation setups.
