Townsend Montana area??

Can anyone tell me anything about the Talc(sp?) mine located near Townsend? How far is the nearest housing to the mine, ave. cost of living, availability of housing, etc..?? How many people does the mine employ? How far of a commute would it be from Helena, or is there somewhere closer to live? Recreation opportunities in the area? Any help is much appreciated.

townsend, mt

Not sure about the mine and all, been a dozen years or more since I lived in Bozeman, about 65 miles from Townsend. But there is great snowmobiling around Bozeman, and Townsend is about 40 miles from White Sulphur Springs and King's Hill, which is usually right at the top of Snowest's readers picks in the vacation guide.

Great fishing for trout from the shore of Canyon Ferry reservoir in the fall at either "the Silos" or Confederate Bay. Deere and antelope hunting around Townsend, but I think it's mostly private land. Helena is about 35 miles from Townsend. When I left Bozeman, Townsend wasn"t a real big town, but if it's like any of the other areas of western Montana, it's probably gotten bigger.

Good luck!

I don't know anything about the mine, other than it's there, in the foothills of the Elkhorns west of town. I'd guess its close to 8 miles from town? Townsend is a "full service" town...its the county seat, has a hospital, high school, grocery store, car dealerships, tire shops, etc. Townsend has cleaned up pretty well in the last 10 years. It's experiencing some growth, but mostly in the rural areas where sub-divisions have been built. Real Estate has skyrocketed here in the last 5 years, but the good days for contractors are coming to an end. Things are slowing, so you might find a good deal on something a realtor has been sitting on for awhile. It's in a good location for recreation...Canyon Ferry Lake has good fishing. Antelope, mule & whitetail hunting, elk, mountain goats, upland birds and good waterfowl hunting all around the area within 25 miles. The area around Canyon Ferry Lake is BLM & state public land and is used as a wildfile management area. Quite a bit of land in the Big Belts and Elkhorns is national forest (public land). The elk herd in the Elkhorns is basically managed for trophy bulls. My uncle guided in the Elkhorns for years. There's good hiking/backpacking/trout fishing to be had in the Big Belts, specifically Edith Lakes Basin. There is OK snowmobiling in the Big Belts, but you'd be better off going to the Little Belts, Madison or Gallatin ranges. Within a 2 hour drive, you have a few ski resorts, Great Divide, Bridger Bowl, Big Sky, Moonlight Basin and maybe King's Hill.

Thanks guys for the info... sounds like there is plenty of fun to be had! I'm an avid outdoorsman, so I don't think I would have any trouble feeling right at home with all the hunting and fish opportunities! Does a guy have to apply for archery permits for deer and elk in the area or are they buy over the counter??

Anyone else have any info. about the mine?

Thanks again fellas...

All you have to do is get your archery stamp, conservation license, then just go to the sporting goods store and purchase your general elk tag and deer tag. If you'd like to get a tag for a coveted area where there are trophy bulls you will need to apply for a limited draw permit and I believe those applications need to be postmarked by the 1st of June. Some areas like the Missouri Breaks are a guranteed archery tag but you still have to fill out an application and send it in. I live in the N.W.part of the state and have excellent luck getting my bull every year with a general over the counter tag whether it be with my bow or rifle. The neat thing about MT is that you can hunt with a bow from sept-mid of oct and if you haven't got you bull or buck you can hunt with a rifle from oct to end of nov. I shot a bull this year that scored 325 on a over the counter diy public land hunt.
