Towing with a cummins

The last good diesel that came in a ford was the 7.3. The last good diesel that came in a dodge was the 5.9. GM, well???? They build a nice halfer.

I found a really sharp lookin 2007.5 cummins with the 6.7 in it for a pretty reasonable price. Still unsure about the motor, is the consensus on here that if you had the option to get a 2007.5 w/ the 6.7 or a 2007 w/ the 5.9 go with the 5.9? My dad has an 05 with the 5.9 and it tows great and drives smooth.

If you are getting an auto trans truck, definately get the 6.7. You get a kick @ss 6sp auto with grade braking, manual shift mode and factory exhaust brake. With that comes all the emissions crap, dpf, egr, etc. Worst case, you get an emissions "lemon", but you can delete all that stuff and have a good mileage, good running 6.7. Best case, it runs fine. I know 3 guys with 6.7's and none of them have had any emissions issues and they all use their trucks as grocery getters which is supposed to be hard on the dpf's due to re-gens more often, not completing their cycle, etc.
If getting a manual trans truck, IMO, I'd get a 5.9 and never worry about the emissions garbage.

My '07, 5.9, 6 speed, 4x4, Mega gets 16-17mpg on grocery gettin' duties, 18-19 mpg empty on the hiway at 80 mph. 13-14 mpg towing a 2 pl enclosed or a ski boat at 80 mph on the hiway. All on the 90hp setting. Has a bullydog, otherwise stock.

I have an 03 HO Cummins with 48RE auto. Has Smarty JR, air intake, 35" Toyo MTs, Kore Suspension and Goerend Valvebody.

Good truck so far. Just drove Bozeman to Seattle with my sled in the back and got 17-19 MPG.

As mentioned, speed really effects mileage. 75-80 MPH gives you 17 MPG. 70ish is more like 18-19. Have gotten aroun 25 MPG driving slower (60 MPH on two lane roads).

I haven't towed much more then a two place with a sled in the back and have gotten 15-17 MPG depending on speed and wind.

Had an 01 HO Cummins 6 speed with the Juice, 4" exhaust, air intake and 100 hp injectors. Got very similar mileage to my 03.

Got around 13-16 MPG towing a car the couple times I did.

What do you get towing with the Hemi? 7-8 MPG? I had a 04 5.3 GMC and got 8-9 MPG towing a two place enclosed.

Also

If you want a real truck get the new ford 6.4 and get the super 275 chip and striaght pipe it. you will have 500+ hp and over 1100 lbs or torque. its an amzing fun ride.

And from what I've seen the mileage is just terrible. 12 MPG empty and 7 loaded! Damn, mine as well save your money and buy a V-10. You can keep your Powerstroke!

7.3 was a good engine but certainly no power house. At least you keep them running though. 6.0 has good power but you just can't keep the things running.

Ford should take over the Cummins deal and get it over with, i want a new ford soooooooooooooooooooo bad, but i also dont want a damn 5.4 or the 6.4.. GIVE US THE FACTORY FUMMINS!

I've got a 2004.5 with an auto, 4.10 gears, 31x12.50 tires, Edge attitude, 4" exhaust, and k&n filter. It's got plenty of power. I tow 4 sleds on an open trailer at 80-82 mph. We run it in the tow mode (#2) and the best we got was 12mpg and on one tank we got 6.5 to 7mpg. I know the rpm's are killing the mpg but I want to get out west to ride.;) With my 28' enclosed car trailer at 60-65 we get 15-17.

You better buy a Dodge then cause Ford hasn't got a chance at gettin the Cummins. They even sold off the small percent that they owned of Cummins, back in OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH 2001?

i doo have a dodge, i just dont much care for the truck as a truck itself. I just like the way the F250s drive and look, especially when lifted. But iv ridden in way faster cummins than the power stroke buddies...

If or when Chrysler and GM go down (cross my fingers that they dont) Fords got a good chance then maybe, ill get my fummins

Haha, i see spartan is still very quiet around here. powerstroke.org has a thread in motion with a 6.4 vs dodge smarty, i guess we will see what happends!!

I have got an 07' 5.9 auto that I bought new in Oct. of 07'. It now has 43,000 miles on it, I tow a 24 foot cargo trailer quite often and I also tow a skid steer(10,000# plus trailer and attachments). Daily driving to work, average around 14-16mpg, towing 10-12 depending on how hard I push it. It doesn't seam to matter if I an towing 3,500# or 18,000# it still pulls the same. I haven't done any programmers or intake, exhaust mods to the truck, it is bone stock. The only issue I have had is the tranny got warm a couple of times when I had to back the cargo trailer "UP" into a job site!!
I was always a GM man before this truck, I have no complaints. My previous truck was a 3/4 ton cc/sb 454 manual, it got the same mpg weather you were pulling a load or just cruising down the hiway "7" and that had to run on premium fuel $$$.

real fords run cummins!

2006 f650 5.9 cummins.....and allison trans!:D
12 miles to the gallon, thats hauling a 6 pack of beer on the back, or 2 f350s. it doesn't seem to care:face-icon-small-win

just makes it a little hard to believe any of it without some decent proof.. I bet they're fast, but in the 13s and 500+ without good proof is hard to believe.

I can understand that. We should do a dyno day, and put it to rest. I wonder if Edge would let me throw it on there dyno.......?

Curious, for the guys who run programmers...what power level are you running when towing? I know Edge has recommended against anything more thn 40-50 hp extra..even less if over 7-10K lbs behind.

Moonlight has a dyno I think.

As for towing with mine.. I run my Smarty on 5 most of the time but I only have a 2 place Im towing right now. anything bigger I'd put it on 3.

so just a simple programmer and straight pipe will net 500hp huh? How about other supporting mods? Clutch/valvebody/tq converter? Lift pump? Turbo? Headgaskets? Also, is this 500hp number come up with by adding the advertised hp of the ford to the advertised hp of the programmer? If so, it dont work that way...also, is that 500hp at the crank or wheels? Sorry, but i call BS

I call BS as well. Those stock turbos won't flow enough air for 500 rwhp, their stock lift pump won't flow enough fuel either. Any stock diesel with only programming will only give you, maybe, 400 rwhp. And making power in a diesel pickup is not simple addition. Stock manufacturer HP number + Programmer Hp number does not equal power to the wheels.

You guys need to look around before you through the bs flag out, there is lots of time slips, lots of dyno graphs and lots of people running the spartan tunes, all getting 500+ at the rear wheels and 1100 trq at the rear wheels with lots of miles with just a tune, intake and pipe. Sorry boys but the new 6.4 is for real!:D
