Torn ACL

Who has torn their ACL, and how long till you were able to function again?

I crashed hard skiing 2 weeks ago and this morning I was informed by the Doc. that it is torn. He wants to operate next Friday.

My main problem is that I hoped to enter the Police Academy next September.

Been there... '94, operation in 96'. I'm a wimp when it came to the recovery, took a long time. BUT; I've done better with it since, have more flexibility than Doc said I'd ever get. Sent you a PM.

I did mine in 1992, took a good month for it to work ok, after a wile mine is very good over all still to this day. Some are not as good as mine has been, My bro had to get his fixed it was popping out all the time. I can do anything I want still, I wear a brase when I ride Moto-Cross or Ski but other than that is is fine so far. Good Luck with yours:beer;

I did mine in 97.... Took a few months to get back to typical stuff, about 6months for anything major...

Since then, they have came along way with surgical techniques...

A co-worker had his done a yr ago.., Was walking with out crutches in ~1.5 weeks.... Was back hiking and running in 2-3 months.... Key is to do ur physical therapy religously...

You'll easily be able to go to the academy in Sep....

Had mine done in Dec 99, and again Oct 07. Im just getting ready to go back to work on the 26. I work outside so walking and climbing on the snow and ice was the reason for being out that long. I was hobling around the day of the surgery with out crutches. The Doc said more you can do on your own the better it will be.

If you ever go on thumpertalk under health and fitness Dr. Mark Sanders answers questions on injuries. He races mx and by the sounds of it is a very good surgeon. He claims he has his patients doing pt the very next day and this speeds up their recovery very much.

I have had acl replacement surgury twice. The first time i blew it out playing basketball and than 12 years late blew the same knee out climbing chutes. do all the physical therapy and than some more. I was packing game out 5 months later both times.

I wrecked mine in September. Had surgery the 25th of September. Off crutches in 8 days gimping arounding. Biking in about 2 weeks. Jogging in 6 weeks. Riding sleds in 3 months. Started playing basketball around the four month mark. All in all it's doing pretty good. I think it takes about 6 months for a full recovery. If you have surgery now you should be ready to go for the academy.

I tore mine in a MX accident about 6 years ago. It took about 6 months before I could ride and play sports again. Stick with the theropy as much as you can. I started riding a bike about 3 weeks after I did it. That seemed to help out quite a bit.

Depends on what they find wrong.. I had mine done on Dec 21st (8 weeks ago) my winter is pretty much out.. They replaced my acl, pcl, stitched up my mcl and cleaned the bottom of my kneecap.. Even have someone else's tendons in me now.. I just went down to one crutch a few days ago and hopefully will be off the other one next week.. I'm to 135 degrees motion, but its been a royal pain.. Make sure you get a Gameready machine for the two weeks after surgery, and get into therapy big time.. I'm not sure I'll get on a sled this season but I'm hoping that maybe with a custom sports brace I can get some spring riding in..

don't cheap out on the brace either. i have a donjoy from about 15 years ago. it was what all the footballers were wearing then, and a lot now. quite expensive, but small, light and fit under all my gear. good investment
