To boost or not to boost... That is the question

I bought a brand new nytro mtx 153 last year with intentions of boosting it. LET ME HAVE IT!!! I am asking for advice. The intended use is about 1/2 mountains and half trail/ditch banging in eastern sd. I plan to put 2000 miles a year on this sled so reliability is important. I dont need the most power just enough to out climb my buddies on their summits.

Boost for sure! I would take a hard look at Impulse, great kit, stand alone fuel injection, great customer support and awesome performance!

boost

The first thing I did was a 180 kit, and glad I did. All the lightweight stuff will come in time.

While the 180 kit is nice and simple and cheap, you may want to invest in the 240 kit. Once you try boost you will want more LOL ! The 180 kit is very hefty in price to upgrade to a 240/270 kit. Just get a 240 kit and turn the boost down to 12 psi or so. You will be in the 200-220 range and will spank every summit around and then some. I tried all the Nytro kits and the 180 kit is just too anemic for me. Sure you don't have to do the headshim but its pretty simple to accomplish with some wrenching skills and time. I would never do less than the 240 kit !

Does a guy need a new driver for the nytro at 200 hp? If you put in a head shim do you need to degree the cam? Would a guy be better off putting in some dished pistons? Whats better, impulse, mcx, boondocker, or rotrex super charger?

For what you described in your first post, I would go with MCX 180 kit. No head shim required. Stock drivers will be fine. 91 octane pump gas. Automatic altitude compensation. Gas in and drive at home and in the mountains. MCX stuff rocks, been riding and installing it since 2005. The only problem is how bad it will make the stockers look, they might not want to ride with you, lol

I'm starting my 3rd year with stock drivers on my Impulse Nytro, but they probably won't make it through the year. The headshim and cam timing aren't bad at all with the Impulse, just need a dremel with high speed metal cutting bit and a can of copper spray gasket and follow Paul's instructions. As for horsepower, 12 lbs on the Impulse kit is really fast. I've searched for more horsepower in every snowmobile, bike or car I've ever owned and thought about turning the boost up before last year and again this year. I just haven't found a use it.

I think if you want reliability I'd stick with the 180 kits as well. Although there have been alot of posts with guys with tons of miles on their high HP kits, imagine how many more miles you'd get out of a low boost kit! The 180 has more than enough for what I do, still allows you a bit of a challenge when it comes to the hills and other stuff that may require more power. If sledding got as simple as "point and shoot" and you make it ever time , where's the fun and the challenge! Sherm

Is there such a thing as too much Boost. Yes!

Having a couple of turbo sleds I can honestly say I don't like them for ditch banging. Way to easy to screw up, at least for me. A little less HP has never hurt me in the ditch.

The Nytro needs boost to beat the summits ---- the 180 kit will do it and have stock reliability and great drivability. I have a very light mod --but stock engine apex and it gives the 800s a real run anywhere but the stock nytro is just a bit to low on power to run against 160HP sleds in the hills.

Boost it for sure. I am basically in the same boat as you go out to the mountains about 4-5 times a year and live in Eastern SD as well and do some ditch bangin. Where do you live? If it is in your budget do the Impulse kit and don't look back. You can turn the boost down if you want.

Palace Motorsports in Mitchell is a Dealer for Impulse. They did all the work on my sled and did a great job, they also just finished doing my cousins Impulse Nytro. PM me if you would like there number
