? TKI or Kurts gear down ?

With the season coming to an end I was hoping to reach out and get some information from guys that have gone with the TKI belt drive update or Kurt's gear down on their Axys. Obviously looking to make some updates and changes over the summer!!! ha ha

I'm currently running a 17 Axys 163 / 2.6 with a SLP pipe / can and tossing around a gear down and I'm wondering if it's worth it???

I'm looking for real world experience with these two setups and what your thoughts are. What did you see for differences in track speed, low end performance and clutch temps (belt life).

Also, what clutch setups are some guys running with these setups and the big question........is it worth it and would you do it again???

Tki has way more gearing options and made in the USA. If you ever have to change a belt on the hill, which you probably won't, it's really easy.

Performance wise I think the gear down on the 2.6 makes the sled way snappier off the bottom and reduces belt heat.

So I've had both. I've run Kurt's gear down & clutch kit on my '15 pro and '17 Axys and I ran the TKI belt conversion on my '16 Axys 155 x 3" with stock gearing and clutching. The TKI is a top notch product. I will have one on my '18 163 x 3" turbo. I never had any issues with either belt drive and like the reduced maintenance and in the chance I break a belt, it's an easy fix. When chain cases fail, well...

The Kurt's kit as simple as the stock kit. The TKI you do have to check for tension occasionally, but if you do have change a belt it's easier. TKI also has the option to change your gearing.

If I did nothing else to an Pro/Axys, a gear down and clutch kit would be it. I rode a number of other sleds this year and it's night and day how much snappier and responsive the combo makes a sled.

2,600 miles on the '16, 1,600 miles on the '17. Never had a belt failure on either side.

Thanks!!

I guess I forgot to ask, does the TKI come with clutching components, because I thought Kurt's does????? Or maybe not??

Well I went with the Pro gears and Axyz belt on my stock 163 Axyz with HPS can really liked how it felt . Total cost $125 for gears , now I have added SLP pipe with the HPS can , rooster weights and a black /purple spring and 1 delrin washer. Hoping to try it out this weekend .
I am also the proud owner of a TKI kit for a Pro that I ended up with after purchasing it for a friend , whom decided he did not want one with a tensioner . Tom at TKI said it would fit my Axyz and if I sent him the top sprocket along with the mounting plate he would trade me out for shipping cost . At the time he was at the Hill climbs so I gave him a week and called to finalize the transaction and since he was doing me a favor I thought I would get a extra belt and the bottom bolt . Tom informed me that he did not want the bracket just the pulley so a new bracket is $80 plus a belt $80 and a bolt is $10 plus shipping . So if anyone is interested in one for a PRO I have one in the swapmeet for sale . That is my experience with TKI .

I'm glad you posted, as I completely forgot to ask about the stock Pro gear change out for gearing down too. So 125.00 for the Pro gearing set up and your happy with the overall performance?

I love my TKI. I geared down, but also put a 174 on at the same time. Great customer service. I rode it a day, next weekend looked on Friday night just to make sure it was ok. The belt was walking on the lower pully about a quarter of an inch. Called and left them a message figuring they would call back on Monday. Tom called me sat morning while we were on our way up the mountain. Told me he thought I installed a shim wrong. 5 minute fix in the trailer before we rode away. Great product, great people.

I am running a stock 155 2.6 and ran Pro Pulleys on my last ride. Worked great, definitely a torquier feel. Clutch temps should drop. If you want around a 2.4 ratio I see zero reason to spend $500+ on aftermarket parts when you can bolt on factory parts in 10 minutes for $100. That said I plan to run a TKI system geared to around 2.33 next year as 2.42 felt a little "slow" for the way I ride.

Yes I am pretty happy with my Pro stock gear set up . With the pipe and HPS can set up I was pulling 8250 on the hill my friend with the SLP pipe and SLP can 155x3 Assault was pulling 8350 . We are both running 68g weights and I have him by 100+ lbs also . Still need the belt to rise another 1/2" in primary so I may have to bite the bullet and put on the TKI setup .
