The last two times I have bought tires for my truck I found the best deals at sams club. ($300 less for 4 goodyears than local tire shop.)

Tirerack is awesome if you want to save money, I got rims and tires from there for about $500 less then anywhere local. I went with the yokohama geolander A/T-S and have loved them! Local dealer wanted $785 installed for a set of 275-55-20 Copper Discoverer HT Plus.
I got the same 4 tires for $489 to my door from treadepot. I ordered my tires on Nov 29th, they showed up 2 days ago. Took them in to get mounted and balanced which cost $50. So I saved $250.

Dude I feel your pain, I had to buy new skins for my 04 GMC this spring. It has 4'' lift and running 285/70/17 I did lots of shopping looking for inexpensive but good tires. I finally lucked out and was talking to my archery dealer, he had some Firestone Destination MT's that had like 10,000 miles on them, he didn't like them cause of the road noise. He sold them to me for 400 bucks. Just hold out and keep looking around you should be able to find a good deal.
