Tires, can't make up my mind!

Getting 285-75-16. TOYO MT E rated, Cooper STT D rated or BFG AT E rated. Anybody have experience with Cooper STT or Toyo? Have D rated BFG now and have 60k on them and they are in need of replacement. Don't do much mudding but hunting and sledding. Dmax CC LB. Sled deck 5 months out of the year and tow 35' toy hauler a couple times a year.

I have Toyo Open Country 285/65R18 and I like them alot. Very aggressive tread pattern and high mileage tire as well.

There are a lot of people that swear by the BFG's, but I've heard bad things about them in the snow. The funny thing is Tire Rack states that they are not rated for severe snow!

Check it out

BFG KM2s or Toyo MTs. Can't go wrong with either one. That being said they are the only 2 tires i will ever run and i lean towards the Toyo MTs

I'm looking at new tires as well. What do you guys think about the road noise of the Toyo M/T's and effectiveness in the snow and ice? This would be on a leveled Duramax probably 285's on 18's.

I've been looking for a set of tires as well and read a lot of praise for the BFG All Terrain. The tire rack says only certain sizes are not rated for sever snow.

NOTE: While most BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO tires meet the industry's severe snow service requirements (and are branded with the mountain/snowflake symbol), selected tires do not. Specific tires/sizes not meeting the industry's severe snow service requirements are identified with a "Not Rated For Severe Snow" notation on the Sizes & Pricing, as well as on Specs.

I know the ones I'm looking at are rated for them 265/70/17 Load E.

My last set of tires were the Toyo MT's in 33x12.5x18 on a 07' GMC duramax. I got tired of listening to them on the highway and had people complain when talking on the onstar phone. I hated them on the ice and they were siped. I switched to the Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac 275/70/18 and love them. They are a lot better in the snow & ice and make a lot less noise. They seem to be holding up well in the oilfields of Wyoming. They were a little more than 1/2 the price of the Toyo's

bfg at's

any bfg at made now no longer has snowflake ratings for severse snow conditions..seen a bulltein at work from bfg ..

the Toyo M/T is a good LOOKING tire. They are noisy and not very good in snow or ice, they are better than a street truck tire but not even close to a BFG A/T. I've heard alot of good things about the Goodyear duratrac but have never owned a set. Right now i have a set of Hankook Dynapro ATM RF10 I have not tried them in snow yet but they ride nice. I went with the Hankook because they are cheaper than BFG and a 4wheel magazine tested them against the BFG A/T and the Hankooks came out on top on all tests but they didn't test them in the snow so i will do the snow test (hopfully on tue. 12-15-09)i hope i made the right decision.

Toyo mt's are garbage unless you plan to only drive on dry pavement. They are terrible on wet, snow, or ice. The coopers will be a bit quieter, better traction, and a lot cheaper. If you think toyo mt's are loud though, don't even look at any mt really, because they are on the low end and aren't very aggressive.

I have ran nitto mud grapplers, MT baja claws, cooper STT, toyo mt, hancook dynapros all year round. Toyos are by far the worst for winter driving. The nitto mud grapplers were absolutely no comparison they have insane snow traction, but it comes at a price they are loud. I don't mind it I just turn up the music, but I know if I go somewhere snow or mud I will get there with the tires by far the best tire that is still suitable for a daily driver and offroad.

I've ran BFG rugged trails, not sure how much different the AT's are, but they are nothing great. And with how many problems people have with BFG tires I wouldn't even look at them.

I have run bfg mub t/a's for the last 20+ years. Many sets on many different trucks. A couple of sets of all terrians. The all terrians are junk for any other other than dry asphalt or mud. I used to like the mud t/a's until I finally broke down and bought a set of Toyo Mt's. They are hands down superior to the bfg's on any surface. On dry asphalt they are quieter than the bfg's (still not silent by any means) and way smoother ride. Mud, they are better. Slick snow/ice covered roads the toyo's are far stickier than the bfg's. As a matter of fact, I have yet to put my studded, sipped pizza cutters on yet this winter cuz the Toyo's are just that good. If you haul alot of weight, the Toyo's at 10 ply (load range e) carry way more weight than the bfg load range d's did. Same loads that would buldge my bfg's badly with too much air in them, hardly make the sidewalls flex on the Toyo's yet they ride softer.... They cost more, but like so many things are worth the extra money imo!

Had Toyos on my Superduty and now have a new set on my 08 chevy 1/2 ton. Aside from the weight they're awesome. Indestructable sidewalls, good tread life, quiet, balance with minimal weight, and great off-road traction. Grip on ice isn't the best but I've had BFG A/T's and I don't think Toyos are any worse. They're not a dedicated winter tire, but if you want the best mud-terrain type tire I don't think Toyo can be beat. Just my .02

I'm not sure what to do for all around tires.

It's between the Toyo A/T, Wrangler Silent Armor, BFG A/T or Revo2's.

The tire has to be good in the snow/ice. I want an aggressive look, but that is not as important as the snow/ice ability as well as a load D tire.

So which of those 4 would you guys take? I'm curious what people think of the Toyo A/T (Open Country) in the snow/ice.

IRC silent armors may be one of the few that actually have a winter rating. Decent snow/ice performance and defiantly a quite ride. I run an E load tire.

I have the silent armours. Got them 5000 miles ago and so far in all conditions I am extremely impressed. No wear so far and I'm not exactly easy on tires. Half the mileage is on gravel and no punctures or chunks missing. Have driven in up to 17 inchs of snow with them and they were excellent. Recently, the roads have been pretty icy and they don't slip around and grip really well. They are quiet on the highway and stiffer but I'll give up a little bit of the ride comfort for a good tire. I'd buy them again and have referred friends and family to these tires and they are impressed. A bit expensive but cheaper then BFG's.

check out the nittos. not many people havey them, the all terrain is basically a toyo open country a/t. they also have the new trail grappler which is pretty sweet looking, and has a regular sidewall and aggressive sidewall, depending on your style. i had a set of 35 inch terra grapplers and got almost 50 thousand miles out of them, on a cummins, and i now have 37 14.5 20 terra grapplers that i got off tire rack for 1320. thats cheaper than les schwab can do for 33 inch toyos

I put general grabber at2 on my 250 this month and have been more then happy with the tires on the slippery/snowy back roads i live off of.plus they where 200 dollars cheaper then the toyo's and still had a 60,000 mile warranty

Dick Cepek Fun Country II's. Great tires. Kind of spendy up front. Large tread blocks which can harbor rocks but great traction and great wear. Side biters on the wall increase buried traction as well. Very quiet at highway speeds and I am on them alot for since I use my truck for work. Almost 20,000 on them and they are showing very little wear.
