Throttle stuck wide open

same kind of thing happened to me, ripping around 4 feet of snow, i get of to help someone get unstuck, start up my sled and it took off on me. homemade lefthand throttle got stuck ( im guessing) so i ripped it off and ordered a goldfinger. Dont use homemade lefty throttles!
( my sled was fine after the throttle got stuck, ran into deep snow and i was able to run and stop it!

My buddies 08 146 XP did the same thing a couple of times at Boulder on Fri. The last time it ended up into a Pine tree. An hour an a half later we got it out. Minimal damage luckily. There was 3 feet of Pow, maybe a throttle cable icing problem.

Started my sled in the trailer on a 10 degree morning the day after picking it up at the dealer, throttle was frozen not wide open just high rpms. I started it several times to heat cycle and free up cable which appearantly kinked the cable between the sheathing and the flipper, two rides later (luckily I was only 6 miles from the snopark) I noticed only one strand of the cable was connected, limped back to the parking lot no sooner grabbed it with some vice grips and it broke. FYI, If you've had any freezing cable issues inspect your cable mine could have broken at a much worse time. I was lucky you might not be.

I took the sled into Mac's in Clarkston to figure out the problem and repair the damage. As it turns out there is a service bulletin on this problem. Aparently loose particles from the fuel tank can get stuck in the slide causing the trottle to jam open. If this is the case the throttle cable will pull back into the sheathing when you release the thumb throttle, but in on the carb side it will remain open. In our case I am thinking it was a throttle cable issue, not the carb because you can see a bend in the cable like the thumb flipper was tring to close but the cable would not push back in. Frozen Cable.

mine is kinked also told the dealer to order a new one. this will be the next problem they will be on back oredr

What ozzmanmike said, use the iso heat in the little bottles. I ran my 99 670 withought a outside filter on the intake and it froze the carbs and wouldn't run, it would just sit and idle. The isoheat is great and prevents any iceing over... Someone elso on here said they put old gloves over there carbs so the engine heat got trapped and thawed the carbs...

my 09 163 stuck wfo friday morning--- had the carb heaters on and had to let it warm up till the temp warning came on. still stuck a few times during the ride---- has been in the heated shop since saturday-- went to load it in the trailer this morning and almost drove it through the inclosed. picked up a 08 cable from the dealer this afternoon hopefully fixes my problem

Stuck Throttle

A little tip....My throttle use to stick all the time. I always leave my carb heaters on so i knew it wasnt going to be those. I stated adding iso heat to every tank and it still did it. So i tried figuring out if it was my carbs or my throttle cable. So i decided to go to the store and buy some spray. You know the aerosol cans that are a few inches tall that you can spray in your door locks if they freeze after a car wash or something? Anyhow, i tilt my sled on its side, grab the throttle to the bars and spray that stuff down the cable housing working it down to the carbs. Every problem i had with it was all gone. I usually do it about every other ride but it sure makes for a less stressful ride wondering when this thing is going to take off. Thats my .02 worth..

I had my cable break 12-26-08, warranty expired 12-28-08, stopped by my dealer when I got back from my trip 1-02-09 they were closed over the holidays until 1-6-09 called another dealer that was open and ordered the part 80.00 dollars, scheduled an appointment with my dealer when the part came in. Just got a call (two hours to replace cable 180.00 dollars) not covered by my now expired warranty or 3yr. service agreement was told it's a wear item. I've got less than 700 miles on it and have put over 3,000 miles on several sleds and have never had to replace a cable as a "wear item" before, WTF.

Sticking throttle

I would chase down your doo dealer on this problem, my buddy rides on 08XP, On the trail down the mountain last night the throttle stuck wide open. Lucky for him that he rides with his teather, it still hit a tree but with little damage, they have a problem in the cable or linkage. Same thing, snapped the throttle a few times and it was OK.

Sounds like the problem is actually the cable about 3 inches from the throttle lever. moisture gets in and sticks them. I have a summit that is out of comission due this the first half hour of our 8 day trip last week. I'd suggest everyone spray their cables. It's a lot easier than dragging the sled home cause it's about a foot shorter than when you unloaded it. Lube is pretty cheap. I hear the pipe alone is close to $800, haven't even started getting prices together yet.

camera is junk at the moment too but here's a rundown of what i can see... bellypan, all front end plastic, bumper, airbox, windshield, pod that winshild attaches to, possibly an s-module & the cost of renting a sled for the rest of the trip.

08 800r xp

Here are some pics of my throttle cable that I replaced last week. It was severely frayed at the oil pump. I have had my throttle hanging up from idle to 6000 rpm. New cable eliminated all but the high idle problem. Have to flip the throttle to get the rpms to slow down. Notice the bend inb the cable sheath.

There have been a few other guys over on dootalk with same oil pump cable fraying on the XP's.

Good Luck
