Thoughts on the new 2014 YamaCat...

I don't own a cat or a yamaha, but I like what I see......arguably the best motor in snowmobiling....factoring in its reliability record..., morphed into a derivative of Hibberts race sled....yes, Yamaha could have engineered their own chassis.....but they could have exited the industry too.....at least cat had the clarity to align themselves with a worldclass engine builder....unlike polaris that fumbled their alignment with KTM .

I was a yamaha rider until they refused to update the mm700 switched to doo now ride a 13 pro buying a new sled every 1 to 3 years. Yamaha has always had great reliability but got tired of spending thousands of dollars to make them equal to the other 3. The bottom line in 4 ft of fresh WEIGHT MATTERS. I think the partnership has more to due with atvs and sidebyside than sleds. In 2015 there will be only 3 sled manufactures but hey we've only had 3 in mt segment for a long time oh ya when was the last time yamaha won a snowcross race 1980.

Time will tell. . . I think once we see what cat comes with for 2014 we will see why this partnership happened. Also I think the cat release is why yamaha has not given an official statement on the deal they have with cat. Seems as though keep acting like this is a sled they designed totally ignoring the fact that they did indeed not. . . . Unless they actually did design it with cat up to 5 years ago? I know it is a conspiracy theory. . But I'm bored.

what i think has happened possibly, is because of poor sales, bad snow years & the japan quake & sunami, its possible corporate yammi may have wanted to drop the sleds.yammi north america didnt & this deal was done to make enough profit selling the motors & buying chassi to show profit till they can straiten out the sled division & make it profitable again.just my guess but i think i mite be close:face-icon-small-sho

Just had a comment pass my desk.

The Yamaha Genesis Triple is 35lbs LIGHTER than the current 4 stroke Cat is using in the 1100T.

This is a side by side comparison of the two engines on a scale without accessories bolted on.

Sounds like moving over to Yamaha will be a WIN for Cat riders next year.

Is this comparison against the N/A nytro motor and the 1100 cat WITH turbo etc?

Probably the most likely story I've heard so far...

The nytro motor with a turbo bolted to it is about 165lbs. I know this for a fact. This was with a thick wall short stainless header. I would guess the 11t may be more as it jsut seems big and has two balance shafts.

What is pictured below plus a intercooler and charge tube weighed 165lbs.

So your compareing OEM production parts to lightweight aftermarket parts...............

I was just wondering what the cats dry weight was ! I remember when they came out in 12 they were supposed to be allot lighter than the nytro ??? I wet to there web site it's not listed !! Funny

I just stating facts. That header you see in the pic is 3/16" wall stainless and by no means lightweight I would say it is as heavy if not heavier than the cast header that cat is currently using on the 11t. The turbo is bigger and heavier. . . The intercooler is maybe a little lighter as the cat one has cast end tanks.

Motor aside has anyone ever weighed the cat chassie complete less motor??? And how about the Nytro same complete less motor and I mean everything less motor, suspention , tunnel, track skis etc. To be honest my T-Nytro was amazing in 2,3,5, feet of powder, The only thing I hated was the ride on rough trails and coming down steep chutes. In soft snow it was a piece of cake to ride. Only when the snow was set up I didnot like it. If Yami would put in the 675 or 1100 crossplane in the cat chassie with nothing else it would be a gas to ride.. the 1100 is supposed to be 240 hp now have that in a 500 lb machine ready to go????WOW!!!!.02:face-icon-small-sho

Don't get too excited these are just short track models, just to get Yamaha some technology.
Who knows maybe the MTX will have its own mountain chassis for 2015. You can long track a Yamacat, but maybe next year will bring a new Mountain sled.

Who knows.

LOL no doubt. . . Maybe they built the chassis all the yamaha guys have been dreaming about. . . and i keep hearing about Sub 500lbs 200+ hp.(4stroke)

It would be a big slap in the face to Yammie. "Here, take this chassis that wasn't good enough for us and you use it. You can call it your flagship."

True likely not what is going to happen. . . LOL but maybe they evolved the proclimb into what it should have been from the start. Cat is good for that crap. Look at the m how it got better each year from 05 to 11.

I personally just love seeing what is new from every manufacturer.

Yamaha has lost interest in manufacturing snowmobiles, no other reason makes business since to bag there own design and pay Cat to use there chassis and put Yamaha stickers on it. This move is more telling for Cat then Yamaha....:face-icon-small-sad Probably not the best of times for Cat right now.

Yamaha doesn't care about sleds and Cat needs cash flow.

Have you seen AC's stock price over the passed 6 months? Not really tough times for Cat by any stretch of the imagination.

And it's not about cash flow for Cat. It's about technology. They realize that they can't 'out-Yamaha Yamaha' (READ: If you can't beat 'em, join 'em). Nobody on this planet builds a better small-displacement 4-stroke engine than Yamaha.

And conversely, Yamaha isn't doing this as an end game. If they were putting an end game together, they'd just end it and become an engine supplier.

They're doing it for technology as well. They want to be in this industry for some reason, but they can't spend the amount of money it takes to develop a chassis and tool it up, especially since they have to amortize across a sales volume that is next to nothing.

My guess is they are using larger margins from this short-term strategy to help subsidize the development efforts for a future platform, and I wouldn't be surprised at all if they are having conversations with Cat about having them build that too, since Japan is the most expensive country in the world to manufacture just about anything...

...just my .02

Hard NOT to get excited In the release they said engines The moto gp engines would likely be the engines they mention. Have a read about it and see.....02:cheer2:

This isn't new for Cat.
Does anyone remember the late 70's early 89's Suzuki snowmobiles?
They were Arctic Cats with Orange trim instead of green trim, otherwise IDENTICAL.
In turn cat got Suzuki engines.
