This will be my snobike for next season. My 09 KTM 300 is ripping but I want to keep it just for dirt. I think this CR500 is going to be the ticket and you can't beat the cost to get into one not to mention they have a ton of power and are just as light as my 300.

I will post pictures this fall when I get the kit on it and all my modifications done. I am really hoping that this bike dominates on the mountain.
 
That sure is a clean CR500. Love those bikes. Do we know what the winter fuel consumption is on those? I keep hearing that the big 2 strokes just gobble the gas.

Thanks it's a 2001 that hasn't seen very many miles.

I don't have any numbers but I have comparisons. Last season I rode my 525 and my buddy rode his 300 and he used more fuel than me but not much maybe a gallon/day more. This season I am on a 300 and he has a CR500 and I think our fuel consumption is very close to the same. We each ride with a little over 6 gallons of fuel and the most I have used so far is 5 gallons and that's on a deep day with a lot of miles. If a guy was to buy one of those 3.5 gallon jugs that bolt to the tunnel that would be the only fuel you would have to pack. I am to cheap to drop $150 on a gas can so I picked up one of the Acerbis 1.3 gallon auxiliary tanks ($25 used) that replace the number plate and siphon into the tank on the bike. I also pack one of those 2+ gallon walmart jugs strapped to my tunnel. The 2 strokes do use more fuel than the 4 strokes but not that much more.

How does your 300 compare with your friend's CR 500 with regards to power and ride? I have my Mountain Horse on a 2011 KTM 300 and it does quite well, but if the power difference between the 300 and 500 equates to increased capability then I might be tempted to look that way.
 
You should know all ready how your 300 does against the big four strokes, as I have read over and over they compare quite well. Now take a moment and watch backcountrysnowbikes video and pay attention to the KX500/540 should'nt make all that much more. It's pulling away every time as the big bore KTM525/540 four stroke is hitting it's limit. I have a feeling we may see an upswing in the value of these older monsters as folks figure out how to make them run right up high.:face-icon-small-win

I have only been on three rides with the CR500 and the one time I rode it I was very impressed with the power difference from my 300. The 500 is capable of producing a lot more track speed than the 300. There have been some issue with the 500 so I don't feel like it has ran as good as it can yet. The jetting has been difficult for him to figure out because he has a mikuni carb on it and then he added a power jet and then the last time I went out with him he jetted it to lean and burned it down about 2 miles from the pickup. The other issue has been that it feels really heavy in the front much like my KTM 525 did so he put a shorter strut rod in it and thinks that solved the problem. I think once the little issues are sorted out the CR500 is going to be tough to beat. The 500 now has a new top end, the jetting dialed in and the shortened strut rod so I am expecting it to work very well, we are riding on Monday so I will report back.

I don't see jetting to be a big issue on these two strokes, I haven't touched my jetting on my 300 and it rips. I think if we can get these big two strokes dialed in and start putting the 450 race bikes to shame that their will be more of a demand for them.

Well unfortunately my buddy with the CR500 threw his back out loading his snobike so he couldn't ride. The good new is I had a buddy going through Portland that was willing to pickup my CR500 so it's sitting in my shop about two months sooner than I though it would be. Now I have to decide if I am going to wait until next season to convert it or try to get it all setup and going for the remainder of this season. If anybody knows somebody that needs a fit kit for a KTM shoot me a PM I will save you some money over Timbersled's price.
 
holy.... i have always thought that would be crazy to put a street bike motor in a dirt frame and put a kit on the rear...
