Ride Report Jan. 3, 2015

Ok.. the good: Blue Skies, there is some white stuff, trails were pretty smooth, good burgers and first time out for a Grandson:face-icon-small-hap

Bad: Forest Circus there writing tickets and really not enough snow to get of the trails:brokenheart::face-icon-small-sad...

Camping season?

We had cars parked on our 700 trail out of the SnoPark and had a tent set up to camp there this weekend with campfire. Might be a better thing to do than trying to ride down low. They tried and tried and finally got one car back out and up on the road. There was one that tried going up the 700 trail last weekend because his GPS told him so to get to wherever he had programmed until he got stuck and then called AAA to get him out.

Ride Report 1/2/15

Rode out of Cloverland:

Last mile or so getting to the parking lot is VERY muddy.

Trails have been groomed but you really can’t get off the trail as there is not enough snow. Another week of this and you won’t be able to get to snow from the parking lot. People that rode in from Rose Springs said they rode 2 miles of dirt/mud to get to snow.

Three feet at the marker.

Yeah, washed my car yesterday. that usually brings some precipitation... lets just hope its cold enouth when it comes.

The Milkshakes Snotel shows it hit 56 degrees on top of the mountain yesterday and 50 degrees today. I ran to Tollgate last night and after moving slush last week it was froze down like glacial blue ice at my place last night it was like 34 degrees then.

ReScheduled Poker Run Cancelled

Hearing today the rescheduled bucket run for this coming weekend has been cancelled... also heard it will not be rescheduled. Lack of snow just killed it

What happens now? This is our snow maker month..

Took the RZR with tracks in from Cloverland to Misery on Sunday afternoon. Not looking good. A lot of dirt road and patches of snow. Still about 2 feet around Misery and warm up cabin. But just not enough snow pack on the trails. Unless we get over a foot of snow even a trail ride is out of the question.:face-icon-small-fro

Here is a picture this morning from the Tollgate end. At least it is white again. It looks like the Milkshakes have 11-12 inches of new snow.

Due to the deep snow CB8 was stuck in the parking lot.... officially all of the Forest Circus roads out of Cloverland are still closed, but there was little to no snow to the Potlatch Road... season over. :face-icon-small-sad

3/1 Dayton ride

At least we still have snow out of our SnoPark but the 700 trail isn't really good because it never had enough to groom with all the water bars on it and so there are some open water crossings on that trail with one that is really deep where the snow bridge has washed out. Otherwise we still have some grooming going on and some people are still playing on the hills. In some of the sun exposed areas the groomed trail is the only area that still has snow so there are minimal bare patches to run on to get to Godman.

They are still skiing at Bluewood also so still a little bit of winter in Dayton with the new snow that had come down this past week. I hadn't been up there for a long time so I had to go up to see what it looked like.

Meeting With Forest Service

On Wednesday July 8 at 6PM at Floch Hall (Asotin Fair grounds) there will be a meeting with the Umatilla Forest Service to collect information on forming new rules on motor vehicle use including ATVs, snowmobiles and motorcycles.

I was asked to be at this meeting (by the FS) and speak about snowmobile and motorcycle use... the help I need:

1) If you ride a ATV, snowmobile, or motorcycle in the Umatilla forest you should attend this meeting (or check the Umatilla FS Web site for other meeting sites.) You know the anti motor folks are going to be
2) If you can't be there, let me know your concerns.

Thanks, Mike

Public Workshops scheduled to discuss forest access and plan revision
on the Umatilla National Forest

Pendleton, OR – The Umatilla National Forest, in cooperation with High Desert Partnership, will host a series of workshops to discuss the topic of forest access and how it should be addressed in the Revised Forest Plan. Workshops will be held during the month of July in communities across the forest including Clarkston, Walla Walla and Tri-Cities in Washington and Heppner, Ukiah and Pendleton in Oregon. (A meeting schedule is provided at the end of this release.)

These workshops are in response to comments received on the Draft Blue Mountains Forest Plan and are open to the public. “Whether you are interested in motorized access, back country hiking, cutting firewood, camping, off-road vehicles, snowmobiling, bicycling or cross-country skiing, we encourage you to attend and provide input on how the Umatilla National Forest should address access in the Revised Forest Plan,” said Jack Southworth, meeting facilitator with High Desert Partnership.

“We hope community members will work together to find zones of agreement, new ideas, and creative solutions that will help us improve the draft Forest Plan,” said Kevin Martin, Umatilla National Forest Supervisor. “We need to hear from people with diverse perspectives and values in order to discuss the full range of access interests on public lands managed by the Umatilla National Forest.” All who attend the workshops will be encouraged to provide input. Workshops will begin at 6:00 PM and doors will open
at 5:30 PM.

The Forest Service will analyze community input from the upcoming workshops and compare it against the range of alternatives and past discussions on the topics, looking for new ideas and solutions. Those new ideas will be reviewed in more detail by the Blue Mountains Forest Plan Revision Team, and they could recommend changes to Forest Plan Components, modify existing alternatives or create a new alternative. The Forest Plan Revision Team Leader and the Forest Supervisors will carefully consider all recommendations.
“We want our communities to know that we heard them, to have a sense of ownership in the planning process, and to understand how access is addressed in the draft plan. Our objective is to have a final plan that more people can support -- or at least live with,” said Martin.

High Desert Partnership is an organization that operates out of Burns, OR with a mission to enhance the ecological sustainability, economic well-being and social vitality of our community by using a collaborative decision-making process with all interested stakeholders to solve challenging issues. Jack Southworth, a rancher from Seneca, OR, will facilitate the six workshops.

For more information about these workshops, please contact Jack Southworth (541) 542-2558, Peter Fargo (541) 523-1231, Public Affairs Officer for the Blue Mountains Forest Plan Revision Team, or Joani Bosworth, Public Affairs Officer for the Umatilla National Forest at (541) 278-3722. Additional information and a draft meeting agenda will also be posted on the Blue Mountains Forest Plan Revision webpage at: http://www.fs.usda.gov/goto/BlueMountainsPlanRevision.
