Tether Petition

I don't agree with tethers. Sure back in the day there was a purpose but with todays deadman throttles it sure seems outdated IMO. Pros and cons aside I just think they are an item that has passed.

REALLY?

You haven't seen the recent threads of guys getting dismembered or their backs skinned off on NEW sleds the last couple of seasons?

Just don't agree with having a tether. Good, bad or ugly I don't see myself "hooking up" to my sled when I ride. I had ski doo's with the DESS system and never once hooked to my gear in all the years I had those sleds.

A step in the right direction for sure.
Hopefully the next petition will be to have mandatory life saving equipment while buying and riding a sled in the backcountry.
Then maybe one to make it mandatory to join a sled club.
And then one for mandatory insurance.....

whoa....got a little carried away there...

haa ha haa! I think that it's a good thing for safety to go hand in hand with riding.. if you ride a machine.. utilize the equipment. There will always be those who choose not to, and we can't over regulate the masses, but if we give people knowledge, and the access to life saving tools, the majority will choose to use them.

I have to admit.. my kids are growing into adult hood and it is freaking me out. I want them to be well educated, and have access to everything that can keep them safe and alive. Like me they LOVE love LOVE riding, so trying to lend a helping hand for everyone, and their children makes me feel like I'm doing all I can to contribute. Having a Law for safety probably won't work.. but having easy access to education and tools that can be life saving is a step in the right direction. Starting at dealerships. I'm actually starting in schools. Elementary all the way up to highschool. Part of their Phys Ed curriculum. Winter Safety, and snowmobile safety and stewardship.
Thank you to everyone who is signing .. one manufacturer rep contacted me already... they are noticing! whoop whoop

Ok. But did you sign the petition? Nobodies saying you have to wear it, just looking for some help from fellow sledders, so they can have the option, many don't.y

#156. I always wear a tether now. I have tipped my xm over about 10 times in the last100 miles and its nice to know that those 2.5inch paddles aren't going to start removing skin!

Yes I wear a helmet and get this a beacon when riding in the back country! Whoa! Crazy I know. Again and again I'm not a fan of the tether. That's all. I'm not calling anyone out that is using one, so relax people if I don't see it your way.

To each his own i guess. I just have to remind myself, its not entirely unlike those of us (me included) who dont wear seatbelts religously. No one to blame but yourself if you get hurt in a crash. But at least the seatbelt was provided.

RJ could you elaborate more on your position for me? While I believe whole heartedly that Tethers can save injury, and possible death, I would like to fully understand your position.
What type of riding do you do? How often do you ride? What safety precautions as a rider do you take to ensure safety? Have you had any accidents or been in a position where someone was injured riding.
What is your age? Do you have kids?

You can pm me if you'd feel more comfortable, and I don't need to know your name for the article.

thanks!

Trish

I agree tethers save lives... but

I believe it should be left as a CHOICE.

If the factories want to do it ....great..... but petitioning
to force them to do it.....wrong.

I completely disagree with that.

You can argue all you want about forcing A PERSON TO USE THE TETHER, but I the tether should at minimum be factory installed on the sled. From that point, the decision is yours if you want to use it or not.

I have seen too many incidents where things went tragically wrong. I didn't use mine originally but now realize how foolish that was and have used it religiously for the past several years.

Tethers sound like a good idea and I would probably use one if it were installed on my sled. However, I'm curious about the statistics. How many injuries occur in a given season because of lack of tethers per lets say every 1000 snowmobilers? How would this compare to the number of injuries people receive from not wearing a helmet? Or excessive speed? Or lack of training?
There's been a lot of comments from people saying they've seen injuries from the absence of tethers, I never have but I've seen injuries from other causes and the whole idea seems like a potential slippery slope in a quest to raise safety.

I agree with this being a choice that we all make - to wear a tether or not. It would be good to know that you have the option when throwing a leg over a sled and be able to put that piece of added extra safety equipment on.

Some may not know of any accidents that have occurred due to not having or wearing a tether. But how many of us have rolled a sled over in the back country and had the throttle stick open, think of the possibility that you are stuck under the sled and a part of you is pulled into the track. How long would it take for your riding partners to get to you to help?

It is nice to see some manufacturers recognizing this. Tethers can be incorporated in a sled build for very cheap and might be a decision point for some strong advocates on a purchasing a sled.

I am a strong advocate of using such cheap technology to keep rider safer.

If you agree or want to help push this in a direction to keep others safe while out riding please sign the petition or think about this and go out and spend the $30 it takes to put a tether on your sled.
